The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. This replacement does not count against the substitution limit each team is allowed per set, although the libero may be replaced only by the player whom he or she replaced.
The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court.
The libero is, generally, the most skilled defensive player on the team. There is also a libero tracking sheet, where the referees or officiating team must keep track of who the libero subs in and out for. There may only be one libero per set (game), although there may be a different libero in the beginning of any new set (game).
Furthermore, a libero is not allowed to serve, according to international rules.
 
The only thing about the girls' performance is that everyone in the press is actually putting pressure on them. Usually we get commentators sugar-coating their words, but no one is hiding their disappointment with them right now. There's no freaking reason for them to be playing so badly.

There are 6 Olympic champions in the roster, FFS.

They are the Libero or Libero player. They are a defensive expert so to speak, meant to receive the serve and dig the ball and keep the rallies going. They can't attack though, and they can be subbed in or out as many times as needed in a game, they don't count towards subs.

One thing that makes volleyball great is that the women version is just as good as the male one, only different. While other women team sports range from slightly watchable (football) to completely unwatchable (bastketball). Women handball is good too.

I'm pretty surprised that Brazil isn't as dominating as it should be. In theory Brazil should be the only team that could beat the US.

That's absolutely right. Everyone is basically flabbergasted with the whole situation. It's not that our adversaries are playing exceptionally well either - the girls are making the most basic and stupid mistakes every single play. They're losing to themselves.

Yeah the standard is really high in both men's and women's!

I know what you mean, but I do believe the South Koreans are playing very well.

This seems really complicated. Why is this necessary and/or how does it benefit the game?

No, they definitely are playing well. But not well enough to a point that justifies the complete and utter destruction of the psychological aspect of a team that lost ONE set during their entire Beijing campaign.

The libero was a position created to mix things up because the matches were becoming too boring. A couple of other rules were changed as well.
 
catching up on today. great for team gb. just watched the replay of the time trial, loved how wiggins was just casually moping around at the end while martin looked absolutely destroyed despite being 42 seconds slower. infinite swag. yay for froome too.
