that's what i was thinking. I'm happy for the American Gold but i thought it was good enough for the russian girl to take it.

I thought the same, but I don't think her routine had a high starting score so when the judges inevitably find faults somehow, it just adds up too much. Personally I didn't see anything wrong with her routine at all, but I am no olympic judge either. Think about Maroney's vault for instance. For some reason they deducted points, even though nobody knows what was wrong with it lol.

Just like i'd like to see the judges explain how Maroney's vault wasn't perfect, i'd like to see the explain how Gabby's score should've been that close to Komova's.

Komova only gained a tenth on the floor? Give me a break. She was wayyyyy better than Douglas.

Her execution was better, but her difficulty wasn't as high, so she didn't get as much points as she otherwise would have. I think Gabby got a generous score, but the Russian girl was never going to get a 15.4 on that routine.

edit: SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE! [TIME PARADOX]

A 9.1 for execution is fantastic, maybe they scored Gabby's too high. Although I didn't see her do much wrong either. I would love explanations of these as well though, it's fascinating stuff.

edit: beaten, sort of

Its impossible for us normal folk to see what they are deducting but I do feel that even of
They were "wrong" they weren't wrong to the point were it should have made up another .25.

Gabby didn't really do anything wrong either. A few little hops. You do realize Komova had the 5th best floor routine score of any floor routine of all of the women for the whole olympics (qualifying, teams, individuals). The highest floor routine score of the whole olympics wouldn't have put her ahead of Gabby (15.325, Ally Raismans phenomenal qualifying routine).

Yea the floors never score that high. No matter how good you do.

Thanks for the comparison on the floor guys. Komova's vault was really bad otherwise this was no contest. I'd take her or Mustafina. Both are pretty hot. Saw a lady at the grocery store on Wednesday who looked like Komova...was ready to pounce* but then saw she was shopping with her mom.

*Wasn't gonna pounce as I'm a chicken.

I'm really not even saying that Komova should've won the gold. I just think that they scored Gabby too high just like weekend_warrior and BravesCountry mentioned. But that's just a problem with any sport where judges and scoring are involved. They never have to explain why they handed out the scores that the did.

How do they even score the gymnasts? I find it crazy that the rank values have three decimal values. As if a judge can justify giving someone an extra 0.001.

That's the thing...so much boring arm flailing choreography...Komova's though was actually interesting compared to the others though and she landed the tumbling.

It's a required element in the routines. I don't see how that would lead to lower overall scores for the apparatus.

Good for Gabby D. but like the post above I bet in the coming days more will try to discount her win.

The problem is when we're watching we basically watch the landings. Because its easy to watch someone stick it, hop or fall. What you don't see is are they doing their flips, jumps properly , tucked etc etc whatever else is required. Obviously the judges thought their was points to deduct just like the "perfect vault" in our mind.

They don't add points, they deduct points for things that you do incorrectly. Moves that the gymnasts perform have a set value to them and for every mistake that you make they take away a predetermined amount of points away for what you did wrong on a certain move.

Also the chick who got silver landed like a drunk girl (yes I am stealing Samuel L. Jackson's material) off of the vault, while Gabby had the most consistently error-free performances throughout all the events.

Gabby won fair and square, and only the russians will complain. They always do, just like when Evgeni Plushenko lost to Evan Lysacek back in the 2010 winter olympics in skating. He was so mad, he awarded himself the platinum medal, LOL

Exactly, and maybe to someone just watching they thought Komova's was more entertaining than Gabby's, but the judging is more objective than that. They watch how you do your moves and deduct from there (like knees too far apart on the flip, deduction of .05. Feet too far apart on the twist, deduction of .03). Not just "oh that looks great, I think I'll give her a 9." Gabby didn't have much to deduct obviously. Komova still got the highest execution score of the event, but she also had the lowest difficulty score of the top 5.

I think one of the Russian chicks landed on their face during Team Finals IIRC.
Aly fell on her head during warm ups of the team final floor excercise as well. Think she ended up changing her routine so that she wouldn't fall since the USA only needed a 11. Something for the gold.

From their wikis I learned both Russians are 17. Komova likes Twilight and Pizza. She only weighs 75 lbs at 4'11". Mustafina has a younger sister gymnast. For females an "A" is added to their father's last name.

what countries could be considered the biggest losers regarding medals?

I've noticed the table and Argentina hasn't won a single one, any color.

Brazil and Mexico have 4 each and Colombia and Venezuela have 3 each.

Well, those are in fact the only 4 countries in latinamerica with medals, I guess that part of the world as a whole is having a mediocre showing these olympic games.

This ticket situation is annoying.

They make you think you have the tickets, then right at the end, they say no tickets

Anyone know if decently priced tickets will be available tonight?

Latin America is not a medal powerhouse. Even with that small haul, I believe they're performing according to expectations or even better. I know Mexico already exceeded its haul from 2008, and Venezuela won its first gold medal since 1968. :lol

The real bullshit in the gymnastics was between Mustafina and Raisman. Here is how the tie is decided...

The tie-breaking procedure in the women’s all-around works by dropping the lowest score for each of the gymnasts across all four events, and using only the three-event tally that remains. Raisman’s three-event total under this method becomes 45.366, while Mustafina, who swallowed a low 13.633 after a fall off balance beam, ends up with a 45.933 – which gives the tie-break to her.

http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-blogs/gymnastics/why-gymnast-raisman-didnt-win-all-around-bronze.html

So that's basically like saying, "Ok, who had the worst event? We're giving the bronze medal to her."

and I got my info wrong, venezuela has just that 1 medal in fencing, and the two countries with 3 medals are Colombia and Cuba.

I think Mexico could realisitcally get a medal in the men's football and possible 1 more by some of the divers.

Will be really interesting to see how the US girls do on the event finals. I mean..... a bunch of them could have contended for Vault medals yet they didn't even attempt to qualify. Strange.

I can bet that Russia and China are the greatest contenders in individual finals. Gabby will also have beam for herself, the rest of the USA team i don't think so.

Just watched Soni break her world record. The pure skill, talent, and dominance of my fellow Americans never ceases to amaze me.

Hey guys, can we get a olympic gif thread. I am sure it would be nice to have everything together and all the new stuff would go well. As well as stuff we haven't seen.
