Sailing is such a weird one. They all look so close to each other on every camera angle, but then it zooms out and they're like 100m apart...

It's amazing just how many people actually support Federer.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but the guy just comes across as too smug to me. I'd honestly love to see him lose.

not that surprising. a lot of sport is expensive to support and the sports we're good at are things like rowing and sailing that are especially costly and not accessible through traditional routes. plus british private schools loving their rowing programs helps a lot too.

Rowing was one of the things that came to my mind as well, but if you read the end of the article they are the one sport that have started to address this.

He's not smug at all. He, Djokovic, and Nadal are all really classy persons.

VERY smug. You should hear some of the comments he makes about his opponent after he loses a match

Glad this is getting some attention in the UK, it's a massive problem:

BBC News: Olympics 'dominated by privately educated'

I went to an inner-London state school - the only two sport 'programs' (e.g. after school classes) were football for boys and tennis for girls...
I had no idea it was that bad. I went to one of those CTC schools in the 90's and there were tons of sports and other activities to participate in.

I see that CTC's are now called Academies and there are nearly 2000 of them. Seems like we're on the right track.

You're not alone.
It certainly feels that way, especially on GAF.

Anyone who comes out in a white and gold jacket thinks too highly of himself in my opinion.

That and some of his comments have been really fucking bigheaded.

Indeed.

Trying to figure out what sports I haven't watched yet. Would be nice to see some of everything. Watching a token quantity of dressage right now while waiting for the judo.

The archery matches going on now, are they finals, semi-finals or quarter-finals?

Go Netherlands!

Edit: It's the quarter finals, nevermind!

KJT!!

Doing really well so far, and lots of time to improve too considering she's only 19!

From Liverpool too!

So the man who's dominated everything is not allowed to think highly of himself? I've never understood that criticism.
Also, if anything ATP is really boring personality wise, luckily they have the game to not make it matter but top players should be less "classy" imo.

Anyways, I don't see Fed breaking anytime soon...

Successful sportsman in sore loser shocker.

He doesn't deal with defeat as well as Djoko, Nadal, or Murray, but he never came off as smug to me.

Nadal has never dealt well with defeat. Dude is notorious for coming up with bullshit to explain his losses ---- "not to take away from his win, but...injury/surface/etc".

Really? That white and gold jacket is bad ass.

In fairness, Nadal is seemingly always injured so he usually really does have an excuse. It would have been amazing to see what he could do without those screwed knees / weak feet.

Team GB doing well today I see? Women's Double Sculls was a Bronze in Beijing, and we didn't even get medals for Men's Single Sculls and Men's Coxless Pair in Beijing. So all going well!

It's the government's fault for not funding/encouraging more sporting activities in school or in local communities outside of football.
Not to turn this into political-gaf, but yeah. You can also see how the increasing lack of extra-curricular activities is leading to a massive rise in 'street kids' and youth violence. There is simply nothing else for them todo.

It's only gonna get worse too - just recently found out my old school sold their youth center to a property developer...

fully and wholly expected
Yes, private schools (with lol money) should always be disproportionally higher, but 7% representing half our medal winners is insane. Makes you wonder how much untapped talent there is out there.
