You know what's funny, Phelps has more gold medals then all but 12 countries.
Blocked in my country but found another link. Thanks for the link, though! My dad and I just got finished watching it.
Are running races timed electronically/automatically like swimming? Or are there eight dudes with stopwatches standing on the side?
Toronto would be a little prepared since we're getting the Pan Am games in 2015 and they're busy constructing stuff for it.Little off topic, but I'm hoping one of the America's or Canada gets the games in 2024. Toronto or Chicago would be lovely.
Also though by this logic, Canada has no business being near the top of the medals during the winter games, yet they constantly are.
Population definitely has an effect but I don't think it's just a linear line, like equal funding countries 50m people and 500m people would be a 10x difference. There's also the amount of stones you are leaving unturned in that kind of a population.
Also, Brazil is 6th in world GDP, has 203 million people, a warm climate...... and 6 medals (1 gold).
...and I'm not arguing that. Look at the post above yours. The training is by far the most important factor, but population does make a small difference. I'm not willing to accept that a country with 500 million people is 20 times more likely to medal than a country with 25 million all other variables equal.

If any of them are doped, they are doped with some crazy next level shit that is invisible in the test and which leaves no typical outside marks.
But anyway
My Katie, what did they do to you!

It does have an impact but it's very minuscule. The training is what's most important. India is a good example, as they have the second highest population in the world but only a handful of medals. ( 2 so far in this olympics ).
Those pictures seem pretty misleading. Her hairline in the first picture already looked pretty far back and i dare say that if wet her hair and slicked it back like in the second picture than they wouldn't look all that different.
Except that makes perfect sense. How many countries actually have conditions that are well suited to winter sports? Maybe i'm wrong but i dare say that canada would be one of the biggest.
Where did i say it's a linear line? I'm only saying that i would describe the impact of having over 10 times another countries population as having more than a small impact.
GDP doesn't tell you how the money is distributed though. Also i never said this was a black and white issue. I'd say that probably has to do with the fact that Brazil like many other countries are limited in which sports are actually appealing there.
That one example doesn't prove that population only makes a small difference. It only proves that the effect that population has isn't really evident unless the country also has the wealth to support it.
I don't think a country with 500 million people is 20 times more likely to win a medal than a country with 25 million. I do think that they are at a massive advantage.
So NBC made the last second move, realzing this will be the last time they will be All England Club for the forseeable future - to do the true FINAL edition of Breakfast At Wimbledon. Expect Tears, rememerances, ESPN backslaping. And all of the 80's Dramatisim as only the Broadway Boys can do it.
Why the fuck are people getting all mad that people are questioning Shiwen's achievements? Are we defending a totalitarist country that doesn't respect individual freedom and any for or shape of truth?
Sorry, but calling China a totalitarist country (the right word is totalitarian, btw.) is exactly this cold-war mindset which discourages any discussion. Do you really believe China can be compared to Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia and North Korea? Because those are totalitarian countries.

Of course they will always be questioned because of their history and what they did in recent past.
I mean, in the 90's they had something similar in women's swimming, then last month this doctor from their olympic teams comes out to say that dopping was the way to go when he worked...
For those who don't know, back in the 70's they decided to get togheter the tallest man and woman from China to have a baby. The Baby is former NBA star Yao Ming. This is all kind of ridiculous but it's a true story.
Off course this is going to happen everytime something out of the extraordinary happens.
It's not racism. Usain Bolt completely fucked up america in the two races the US most wanted to win and noody said he was juiced up. He's just (as far as we know) a freak athlete, like Phelps and others.
And any kind of dopping in a society that has a somewhat functional media is harder to do. US pride didn't save Marion Jones or any other Balco client. Not to mention the numerous MLB cases and so on. It's also a fact that you can manipulate people more easilly in a place where a dictatorship exists, so people can't contest anything that happens.
That's why people doubt Shiwen, or even better, doubt what they might have done to her.

You know that those aren't the only totalitarian countries that have ever existed, right? It's entirely possible to think China is totalitarian without believing it's as bad as those countries.
That's some fucked up story and you claim it's not racism? Fuck off. Seriously. Why the fuck are people getting all mad that people are questioning Shiwen's achievements? Are we defending a totalitarist country that doesn't respect individual freedom and any for or shape of truth?

That's not how Yao was born. He married someone on the Chinese women's basketball team, too. It happens when you spend a lot of time in the same circles. Why the fuck are people getting all mad that people are questioning Shiwen's achievements? Are we defending a totalitarist country that doesn't respect individual freedom and any for or shape of truth?

Ye who spent five years training at the Chen Jing Lun school before moving to a provincial swimming school had a relatively easy childhood training consisting of daily after school swims of one hour before gradually increasing to daily two and a half hours sessions.
But the pressure of entering sports in a China where medals go hand in hand with national pride led him to have a serious talk with Ye when she was 11 and about to join the provincial swimming school.
"I advised her, if you go down the professional path, you will give up a lot of things. You can't turn back on the path once you are on it, are you sure you want this direction?" Ye said.
"She said, 'I want to swim, I like to swim. Dad don't worry, I'll be fine'."
By the time she was 13 Ye was competing nationally, in the senior category, and while she did not win any awards her times put her in the top-16 in both medley races and the 100 freestyle.
That's some fucked up story and you claim it's not racism? Fuck off. Seriously.
http://www.london2012.com/athletics/event/men-100m/competition-format/index.htmlWith the Men's 100M Prelims coming up soon, how come I can't find Bolt in the starting any Heat ?
The 100m competition starts with a preliminary round, which is limited to those athletes who have not as yet achieved the qualifying standards. The qualification procedure from this round is determined by the final number of entrants.

Not that I believe his story, but how is that racism?
Spreading & believing bullshit against one certain group of people because of some pretty obvious prejudice which isn't even true?
it's a country with an impressive record of government sponsored shadiness, especially in its athletics program.
There was one gymnast found to be underage, who competed in 2000, the team was stripped of the bronze, nothing from 2008.Hasn't it basically been proven that the a few of the Chinese gymnasts in Beijing were underage, and the government basically provided false records of identification for them to compete? I believe that the swimming accusations are unfounded but why would people think it is racist to question the achievements of an athletics program that has already proven itself to be shady?

Sounds like he should submit it to IOC investigators. If they were able to strip Yang Yun in 2000, why not here? After some quick googling, I found an interesting article on one of the girls from the 2008 team. I have absolutely no idea how accurate it is so it's not a definitive statement on the matter but it pulls up some interesting documents that are worth checking out. The article itself seems somewhat unprofessional but the documents are worth taking a look at.

What country doesn't?
I think they got two attempts, and she went again since she messed up her first one
Apparently her first vault got enough points for them to win though, but they didn't know that at the time. Man, things were shitty back then.
WTF. people still spread that stupid story about Yao's parents? Do we need to bring up all the US track and field people that got caught for doping over the years? China bashing is just the in thing for some people I guess.
Americans have been the best dopers. It's only Americans who can break world records with out doping
