Are running races timed electronically/automatically like swimming? Or are there eight dudes with stopwatches standing on the side?

Little off topic, but I'm hoping one of the America's or Canada gets the games in 2024. Toronto or Chicago would be lovely.
Toronto would be a little prepared since we're getting the Pan Am games in 2015 and they're busy constructing stuff for it.

Not sure if they're on time or on budget, though. Last time I drove past the UTSC Aquatics Centre and Field House, that thing was still a pit in the ground...

I like how all the runners react instantly to the gun to me, but the commentators keep talking about how horrible their reaction is

Also though by this logic, Canada has no business being near the top of the medals during the winter games, yet they constantly are.

Except that makes perfect sense. How many countries actually have conditions that are well suited to winter sports? Maybe i'm wrong but i dare say that canada would be one of the biggest.

Population definitely has an effect but I don't think it's just a linear line, like equal funding countries 50m people and 500m people would be a 10x difference. There's also the amount of stones you are leaving unturned in that kind of a population.

Where did i say it's a linear line? I'm only saying that i would describe the impact of having over 10 times another countries population as having more than a small impact.

Also, Brazil is 6th in world GDP, has 203 million people, a warm climate...... and 6 medals (1 gold).

GDP doesn't tell you how the money is distributed though. Also i never said this was a black and white issue. I'd say that probably has to do with the fact that Brazil like many other countries are limited in which sports are actually appealing there.

...and I'm not arguing that. Look at the post above yours. The training is by far the most important factor, but population does make a small difference. I'm not willing to accept that a country with 500 million people is 20 times more likely to medal than a country with 25 million all other variables equal.

That one example doesn't prove that population only makes a small difference. It only proves that the effect that population has isn't really evident unless the country also has the wealth to support it.

I don't think a country with 500 million people is 20 times more likely to win a medal than a country with 25 million. I do think that they are at a massive advantage.

So NBC made the last second move, realzing this will be the last time they will be All England Club for the forseeable future - to do the true FINAL edition of Breakfast At Wimbledon. Expect Tears, rememerances, ESPN backslaping. And all of the 80's Dramatisim as only the Broadway Boys can do it.

If any of them are doped, they are doped with some crazy next level shit that is invisible in the test and which leaves no typical outside marks.

But anyway

My Katie, what did they do to you!

Must be side effect of DOPING.

I may have to retract those statements from OT1 conserning the Yi Shewen after the 800m freestyle. Not as fast however, but a huge upset never the less.

Those pictures seem pretty misleading. Her hairline in the first picture already looked pretty far back and i dare say that if wet her hair and slicked it back like in the second picture than they wouldn't look all that different.

It does have an impact but it's very minuscule. The training is what's most important. India is a good example, as they have the second highest population in the world but only a handful of medals. ( 2 so far in this olympics ).

The Indians do hold 1/3 of the Guinness World Records.

No offends but India is kind of a freak show of a country.

Pretty sure wet hair and exhaustion is a side effect of doping, not swimming 800m in a world-class race.

I was only saying why the medals per population ranking was a poor way to rank. There are multiple factors, of which population is one.

Hahahaha, so I guess the Murray v. Federer final is good enough to take off Bravo and on to NBC

Why the fuck are people getting all mad that people are questioning Shiwen's achievements? Are we defending a totalitarist country that doesn't respect individual freedom and any for or shape of truth?

Of course they will always be questioned because of their history and what they did in recent past.

I mean, in the 90's they had something similar in women's swimming, then last month this doctor from their olympic teams comes out to say that dopping was the way to go when he worked...

For those who don't know, back in the 70's they decided to get togheter the tallest man and woman from China to have a baby. The Baby is former NBA star Yao Ming. This is all kind of ridiculous but it's a true story.

Off course this is going to happen everytime something out of the extraordinary happens.

It's not racism. Usain Bolt completely fucked up america in the two races the US most wanted to win and noody said he was juiced up. He's just (as far as we know) a freak athlete, like Phelps and others.

And any kind of dopping in a society that has a somewhat functional media is harder to do. US pride didn't save Marion Jones or any other Balco client. Not to mention the numerous MLB cases and so on. It's also a fact that you can manipulate people more easilly in a place where a dictatorship exists, so people can't contest anything that happens.

That's why people doubt Shiwen, or even better, doubt what they might have done to her.

Sorry, but calling China a totalitarist country (the right word is totalitarian, btw.) is exactly this cold-war mindset which discourages any discussion. Do you really believe China can be compared to Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia and North Korea? Because those are totalitarian countries.

You know that those aren't the only totalitarian countries that have ever existed, right? It's entirely possible to think China is totalitarian without believing it's as bad as those countries.

This post makes me want to vote Republican.

Lol oh wow.

Yes, but those are the 3 prime examples. And to think China is totalitarian is pretty absurd and no ground for argument. There is a lot to criticize in China and it's certainly not a free country, totally filled with shady government practices, but it's pretty far from what is understood as totalitarian in political science. Unless you just want to use that word in whatever way suits you.

That's some fucked up story and you claim it's not racism? Fuck off. Seriously.

That's not how Yao was born. He married someone on the Chinese women's basketball team, too. It happens when you spend a lot of time in the same circles.

Anyway, here's the story of Ye Shiwen and what they did to her:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/02/us-oly-swim-china-yeshiwen-day-idUSBRE8710YR20120802

She's only been training and swimming with the sports school since 11, before that she did swimming after school.

Ye who spent five years training at the Chen Jing Lun school before moving to a provincial swimming school had a relatively easy childhood training consisting of daily after school swims of one hour before gradually increasing to daily two and a half hours sessions.

But the pressure of entering sports in a China where medals go hand in hand with national pride led him to have a serious talk with Ye when she was 11 and about to join the provincial swimming school.

"I advised her, if you go down the professional path, you will give up a lot of things. You can't turn back on the path once you are on it, are you sure you want this direction?" Ye said.

"She said, 'I want to swim, I like to swim. Dad don't worry, I'll be fine'."

By the time she was 13 Ye was competing nationally, in the senior category, and while she did not win any awards her times put her in the top-16 in both medley races and the 100 freestyle.

With the Men's 100M Prelims coming up soon, how come I can't find Bolt in the starting any Heat ?

Premlims are for runners trying just to qualify for round 1. Bolt, Blake, Gay etc. are already qualified for the round 1 heats. Look at the times, the fastest I think is 10.29. Which we all know will get you smoked against this elite competition.

Folks. The Biggest Question you must ask is this.

Comcast uses Silverlight.
Cox Uses Silverlight.
God damn AT&T U-Verse uses Silverlight.
Does anybody in the Fighting Game Community remember how bad the live streams were on Youtube?
We all know Youtubes problems with video even with 1080p.
The audio is butchered. You dont put your semi-good stuff there unless you need stuff fast and dirty.

who the fuck uses Youtube to do all the work BBC Iplayer was rebuilt from the ground UP to do? WHO? When Silverlight was ment to do EVERYTHING BBC Iplayer can do. I mean as IT guy, im iffy about MS. But Youtube? God damn. Its ment to see what cat videos are up not a multi BILLION dollar project like this. UGLY. UGLY. UGLY.

Spreading & believing bullshit against one certain group of people because of some pretty obvious prejudice which isn't even true?

I just don't equate a story so goofy as to get the tallest couple possible together in order to manufacture Yao Ming with racism.

it's a country with an impressive record of government sponsored shadiness, especially in its athletics program.

Hasn't it basically been proven that the a few of the Chinese gymnasts in Beijing were underage, and the government basically provided false records of identification for them to compete? I believe that the swimming accusations are unfounded but why would people think it is racist to question the achievements of an athletics program that has already proven itself to be shady?

There was one gymnast found to be underage, who competed in 2000, the team was stripped of the bronze, nothing from 2008.

WTF. people still spread that stupid story about Yao's parents? Do we need to bring up all the US track and field people that got caught for doping over the years? China bashing is just the in thing for some people I guess.

After some quick googling, I found an interesting article on one of the girls from the 2008 team. I have absolutely no idea how accurate it is so it's not a definitive statement on the matter but it pulls up some interesting documents that are worth checking out. The article itself seems somewhat unprofessional but the documents are worth taking a look at.

Sounds like he should submit it to IOC investigators. If they were able to strip Yang Yun in 2000, why not here?

I think there's a greater history of shadyness amongst American Olympians, and more Americans have been stripped or DQed for doping than anyone else, even Marion Jones, who passed on drug tests but admitted to her doping.

I don't think the couple of incidents are enough to direct it at Chinese athletes, especially since I think many people think their programs are more centralized than they actually are. If they're able to link it to specific sports schools in China that are consistently shady, maybe there's a case.

What country doesn't?

People on here and the US media are fucking hypocrites. Accusing/questioning Ye of doping but then go on to praise Ledecky and Franklin. Marion Jones anyone?!? The bigger issue at hand is the IOC making up their own rules and rigged refs.

I think they got two attempts, and she went again since she messed up her first one

Apparently her first vault got enough points for them to win though, but they didn't know that at the time. Man, things were shitty back then.

i still remember getting on the bus the next morning thinking wow, that shit was awesome. me and the other kids couldn't stop talking about it.

the only other time i felt that way was when ash caught his first pokemon.

It's only Americans who can break world records with out doping
