If they are limiting the number of events people can compete in in cycling, they should do it across all sports.

If its a maximum of 2/3 in cycling, the same should be true to swimming/running etc.

Yeah its pretty lame that Swimmers can go for so many, and there are like 25 odd medals to get. Versus the 10 in the velodrome.

I don't think it's lame. It's just lame if we pay attention to the penis waving competition of overall medal count going on. It's rather obvious that countries that dominate the disciplines that give the most medals will have a higher tally overall, but the Olympics are supposed to be competitions between individuals/teams, not nations.

Christ, those Russian blocks and kills are vicious. My arms hurt just imagining trying to take those on.

And lol Russia anyway. US takes the set.

It takes a rare breed of swimmer to be able to compete in all of the different events though. If they can pull it off what is wrong with that? Instead of it being lame that swimmers can go for so many, it's actually quite awesome. I think it's lame that they can't do the same in cycling.

They could make a 'heptathlon' event in swimming to accommodate multi-discipline guys. 5 events, one medal for beating everyone overall.

That's basically what the Invidual Medley is, each lap is a different type of swim. Even if they did a heptathlon they would still have to do individual medals for each type of swim, since they are so specialized. And there's no reason to stop someone from competing in each of those if they can pull it off. It's an incredibly hard feat that has only been pulled off by a select few in swimming, there's not reason to curb greatness just to slight a medal count.

Apparently the problem is that it "devalues Gold medals" for people who will never see a Gold medal in person.

Masterful trolling from Jake, there.

Interviewing Geraint Thomas, gold medal winner yesterday, with Mark Cavendish there, signed off with:

"We'll hand you over to Sue for a bit 'cause me and Cav want our photo taken with that gold medal"

Phelps made it look so easy that I guess it's understandable why some people don't realize how rare it is.
