I wonder what would happen if we performed eugenics on these athletes. Like have Usain Bolt mate with the female 100m winner, Phelps with Missy Franklin etc. In a couple of generations we'd have super humans roaming the earth.

Probably already happened.

Bolt is fast, but if you focus just on their legs, they're just about all going the same rate. At times, it looks like a little russian nesting doll with smaller legs inside the bigger legs. And really, there's a limit to just how fast you can make your legs go; and these athletes have just about all hit it. Bolt is tall and has the benefit of longer legs and a much longer stride than the rest of the field. It's why he can have slightly slower starts and pull ahead by the end of it.
There was a recent article I was looking at that had a study showing that human speed is limited by the force of the foot meeting the ground rather than leg cycles, and that human could conceivably reach about 40mph with strong enough legs.

He's not know as the worlds fastest man for nothing.

lol

I have a considerable amount more respect for endurance athletes and all-around athletes like Jessica Ennis. People like Bolt have become more celebrity than athlete.
Good for you, has jack shit to do with being the current fastest human ever. You know, fastest, as in speed. Not endurance. That's why people love to watch the 100m and that's also why Bolt gets the attention he deserves.

Bolt is good at what he does. Ennis is good at what she does. Phelps is good at what he does.

Those are just different sports. But as for Bolt's celeb status its just being widely accepted that the 100m sprint is the ultimate Olympic event. This has been the case way before I first watched the games. And Bolt is the best here.
2 m/s in the water is not as impressive as 23 mph which is almost a third of the speed of the fastest land animal on earth.

Yeah, endurance is so much less than a burst of speed. Those people are fat slobs compared to Bolt. What about everyone else that breaks world records? They're the strongest/fastest human beings in recorded history at what they do but they are often ignored because they're not showman like Bolt (which... let's face it is what this comes down to).

Goddamn dude.

Admiration and media frenzy are not the same thing. I have admiration for the man, I just don't see what he can do as being more impressive than other athletes breaking world records in other events.

When those people do that they're the fastest or strongest in that one event but there isn't an explosion of orgasmic delight when they do it.

Eh that's just how the world works. Why are elite football players millionaires and treated like rock stars everywhere while the best hockey or water polo players unknowns and not making any money? It's because football is 100 times more popular than those sports and you can apply the same to the 100M race.

No it isn't. Bolt could be a stick in the mud like Phelps and he would still be loved. When you win the premier event, you are a star. Every single winner has been praised like no tomorrow. The difference with Bolt is that he has been so impressive and special that it makes him beyond a superstar.

It's the most popular race because the 100 is short and the athletes run at top speed. Usain Bolt is the epitome of the 100 meters therefore super popular. What are you arguing?

The 100m has been popular before Bolt.
It's the fastest speed you ever will witness a human being moved at.
Did you never race your friends as a kid?

Goddamn dude.
Imagine if you found yourself in a foreign country where you didn't understand the customs and couldn't comprehend why people do the things they do.

That's how I feel when it comes to the 100m.

No, I was too busy getting my face beaten in every day by the other kids.

They are the same thing.

If you can't grasp how impressive it is to set new world records and top speeds in physical and "simple" activities that have been performed by humans ever since the dawn of time, then I feel for you. Endurance running is a completely different thing. And, while incredibly impressive, it frankly delivers none of the incredible bursts of explosive power we see at the 100m dash.

People don't really care that much about the car with amazing mileage, they care about the cars with explosive performance and incredible speeds. And for good reason.
Bolt's victory didn't detract anything from Mo Farah's performance, don't worry.

correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't bolt's top speed higher in his 200 meter world record than the 100?

For the third time its because it is the fastest a human will move without any assistance. Longer distances obviously require pacing.

Then you are probably in the same situation as .0001 percent of the world. Not everyone swims, not everyone plays basketball or football or whatever. What is true is that we all at some point have ran as fast as we could. We know with near certainty that Bolt is the fastest human who has ever lived.

Oh, you're one of those. I apologize for giving you that original response and wasting my time. It won't happen again.
