If you go fast early, the person behind you can get in your slipstream and use 30% less energy. If you're in front, you don't know if the person is going to come up from your left or right, and when they start accelerating. If you're in back, you need more energy at end to win, though. It's a huge chess match.

Make sure you watch the elimination cycling later. Basically a huge pack that sprint every couple of laps because the last one to cross the line gets eliminated.
