I think we only really bother with it because it's the first set of golds to be awarded and success in that is seen as giving a 'feel good' start for the whole team which will encourage the others.

Clearly proved wrong this time, give the money to other sports, we're not going to get a load of golds in Rio, no matter how much we throw at it.
