It's America, although Brazil (the NeoGAF member) will probably try and find some alternate ranking system that puts Brazil on top.

He's always gone by the FIVB Olympic rankings.

While we are on the topic, why don't the Irish do better in other sports? Surely boxing isn't your only gold medal hope?

I'd imagine horse riding would be a favourite. Most jockeys are small Irish fellas.

Total medal list

1. European Union 239
2. United States of America 82
3. People´s Republic of China 78

Note: EU basically have as many laws in common as USA and their states have.

At-least 50 % of all laws in the EU member states are affected by the wrath of the union. That means in at-least 50 % of all laws in any country, the "supreme court" of EU have the final say.

We even got European Union citizenship and the Bryssel elite even proposed that all EU memberships to have the EU flag on their sports uniforms.

(Women's football)

Fuck, my lab got really loud this morning after that goal kick, lol. So much cheering! What a relief! :D

Good luck this afternoon, Team USA.

There was Michelle de Bruin/Smith a while back if she counts (given the, uh, awkward circumstances). Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

The Canadian funding has been debated and criticized for decades, but the success of the Vancouver games has changed public opinion considerably. Funding is never going to reach the levels that the American pour at their athletes, but there will be less reluctance for Canadian funding now.

HOW the funding is distributed is the big debate. The "own the podium" program switched emphasis from balanced funding. Instead of sending a huge team with a bunch of athletes who are barely going to finish top ten, the funding has been distributed to the sports and athletes who show the potential to medal. This has left a lot of the weaker sports to fend for themselves with minimal funding.

There was also a major emphasis on winter sports because of the Vancouver hosting. Not only because we're good at it, but they wanted a good showing for Vancouver. It worked. It was a huge success and all Canadian olympic programs will benefit. Now the "own the podium" program extends to summer athletes as well and I can see Canada showing improvement in future summer games. The limited population is never going to see us competing with the big boys, but a top ten overall finish and more gold is definately possible.

What do you mean by 'funding,' exactly?

Sealda continues his tradition of saying dumb things.

As opposed to everyone else in the world.
That's a technical ranking just based on tournaments played in.

The NBC Commentators must be using the wrong system, I guess. I've heard other Americans think the Chinese were #1. Those World rankings are pretty meaningless, giving you more points based on tournaments played this year. There's been only 1 tournament in North America so far this year, while there's been 3 tournaments in China, and 1 in Russia already. Beating Asians and themselves is what China is good at, doesn't mean they're #1 if they have losing records to Brazil and the US. That's why the Olympic ranking, taking more tournaments into account (it looks at your record over at least 1.5 years, even if you play in every single tournament), but it's still flawed.

Two gold medals in the space of about fifteen minutes, and I'm not sure if they could be more wildly different; one in dressage, the other in women's boxing. Delightful. I shall look forward to the Spandau Ballet tonight.

Misty and Kerri themselves proclaimed that they'd just beaten the number 1 ranked team in the world after beating China.
