FTR, I wish my country were as good as the USA in either Swimming or Athletics.

Damn, Scott-Aruda turns 40 in October? She's gotta be one of the oldest athletes outside of equestrian and shooting/archery participants ie stuff where you don't have to be an athlete to be good at it.

Hadn't seen this posted, but holy shit...

Any athlete complaining of a minor injury during London 2012 had their troubles put firmly in perspective after it was confirmed that the USA's Manteo Mitchell ran on a broken leg.

"As soon as I took the first step past the 200m mark I felt it break. I heard it. I even put out a little war cry but the crowd was so loud you couldn't hear it. I wanted to just lie down. It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half.

"I knew if I finished strong we could still get the baton around. I saw Josh Mance motioning me in for me to hand it off to him, which lifted me. I didn't want to let those three guys down, or the team down, so I just ran on it. It hurt so bad. I'm pretty amazed that I still split 45 seconds on a broken leg."

Powell anchored the Jamaicans to a world record in the relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

But he was missing through injury when a team of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt lowered the record to 37.04 seconds at last year's world championships in South Korea.

All four are in London as part of Jamaica's relay squad.

It's Jamaica's relay to lose.

Forget your 1.34% gold medals, the GIRLS are COMING!!!

Please don't be a picture of the closing ceremony rehearsals...

First we shoehorned Macca into the Olympics, now we're wheeling out the Spice Girls.

Who will run in his place for the final?

Would be cool to see Eaton run and get another gold to go with his decathlon, he has a really strong 400m for a decathlete, if he went all out without worrying about saving energy for other events he could be competitive.

Might have no other option given the injury situation with Wariner and Merrit.

Damn. Bolt is tearing Carl Lewis a new one:

“I’m going to say something controversial right now. Carl Lewis, I have no respect for him,” Bolt said. “The things he says about the track athletes is really downgrading for another athlete to say something like that. I think he’s just looking for attention, really, because nobody really talks much about him.

“That was really sad for me when I heard the other day what he was saying. It was upsetting. I’ve lost all respect for him. All respect.”

Asked which specific comments from Lewis made him angry, Bolt replied: “It was all about drugs. Talking about drugs. For me, an athlete out of the sport to be saying that. That was really upsetting for me. Really upsetting.

“To jump up and say something like that. As far as I’m concerned he’s looking for attention. That’s all.”

This exactly. As soon as we found out we got the games, 3 years before Beijing, we plowed so much money and effort in, and for that effort we doubled our gold count from Athens 2004 (9) and had our best ever olympics (19)

Is Brazil doing something similar? Because if they are it's not working, they're 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze below Beijing with 3 days to go.

You get out what you put in, simply being the host doesn't generate success.

The reason host nations get a bump is because of their preperations.
Well, for what is worth, we already have 4 medals secured(at least 2 bronze in boxing and 2 silver in football and volley fem) with the possibility for another one in masculine volley, with the semis being tomorrow. The best result for Brazil ever was 15 medals and we already have got that, so, this could be the best edition of the summer olympics for Brazil ever. Lol

But no, it's crazy to even think that Brazil will make some noise in 2016. Perhaps top 15, if we're lucky.

So proud of our womens soccer team, a medal is a medal. Not going to whine about what could have been. These girls played their hearts out against teams rated higher than them. Christine Sinclair most goals of any player in the olympics with 6. She is arguably one of the best women soccer players ever. Go Canada!!!

And congrats to the US for the gold and Japan for the Silver. :)

Americans should STFU about people doping, especially when you've been caught with it. Honestly I didn't know Carl Lewis was a doper until the guy in previous page said it. I don't buy it that he didn't know about it. American media, shun and accuse other nations of doping but when their own athletes do it, just slap their wrists and let them go out and represent us!

Sinclair's a local girl to boot. Doing the west coast proud.

I assume he would have to have been listed as an alternate all along to be able to do it. I don't think you can just throw just anybody in to fill holes.

Watching the highlights for the day and the Americans got away with another handball in the box. Reffing in the woman's football games needs to get better. That happens in a men's WC and people are going to get killed.

What happens when someone gets injured during a qualifying or semifinal heat? Whole team out or can that team replace a runner and do a re-run?

Out. Unless another country caused the injury, as in South Africa's case, then they can be pushed through to the next round.

Hope Solo sure spouted off some weird stuff in that Costas interview

Like what?

Also, this thread got insane when the US Association Football team won the Gold. I hope world-GAF understands that Americans were being ironic with their over the top patriotic displays... Gold Medal in Trolling? Throw it on the pile.

Just got through trudging through all DAT SALT (good game, Japan) and this is my favorite post of the today:

Most gold, most silver, most medals, most everything. USA #1

Are you even trying rest of the world?

And we put up 3 more since this magical post.

I love how when we were behind in the medal count, it was all about China and how they were beating us but now that we got dat double digit lead, peeps trying to act like the medals don't matter anymore.

Never change, haters.

Didn't that just happen in the last WC...

You have to thank GB gfor taking two golds sway from China in boxing and Taekwondo where they had two world no. 1s. It's all very close at the moment, i thoug the US would really pull away when the track and field started.

Adidas paid £80m to be the official sponsor of the Olympics. Casual (and even the observant) viewers would surely be surprised by that. The bright green Nike spikes that virtually all track and field athletes wear are sort of synonymous with the games. Most teams wear Nike tracksuits which are visible at the medal ceremonies. For the life of me I can't understand what Adidas is getting out of sponsoring the Olympics. What a waste of money.

As many have already said, I bought some Adidas stuff recently. Gonna see if I can find the volunteers shoes somewhere. Also they sponser the GB and German team, and we are going mad with purchases here. Maybe if you look outside your own country you might see something else?

Only thing that Nike have made me want to buy is the US windbreaker they wear on the podium. Are they available anywhere?

Hmm. Winning races and needing braces at that age, and all those samples going missing from the 1984 games?

It's not nice being accused of doping is it Carl Lewis?

Yeah, should be a lifetime ban. Gaitlin's participation is almost a tacit approval. I guess it's part of a win at all costs mentality. I'm annoyed that Duane Chambers' ban was overuled, it shoul dbe our decision who runs for us and who doesn't.

I don't think there were ever 'haters' as you put it. There were mainly some posts pointing out that the US media seemed to be the only one using total medals as a measure (which out them top of the table above china) rather than total golds which everyone else uses.

Of course USA is a powerful sporting nation. Lovely. So how about having the confidence to show yourself in second place, looking forward to probably overtaking china when the track events get going.
