I agree that it's a great spectacle and a fun watch, and that 15's wouldn't work.

I guess it becoming an Olympic event will make it be taken more seriously by the Big Rugby Nations. Which it isn't to date.

I would say that it is taken quite seriously already. 24 nations compete in a yearly series of 10 tournaments all around the world for both men and woman. The tournaments are broadcast live on TV. The premiership clubs in England also have seven sides. There is also a Sevens World Cup every 4 years, which I believe the Olympics is planning to replace.

At Rio, the Men's Sevens is up for grabs. Quite a few nations could possibly take it. In woman's England is the dominant sevens side.

BMX is fun and all, but it's a disgrace that the quintessential track cycling event the individual pursuit is not at these Olympics.

Uh, it's treated pretty seriously already, especially in NZ.

I think the coolest thing about Sevens getting into the Olympics is that it'll give countries like Fiji and Samoa chances to medal.

Stoked for the NZ Women's 470 sailing gold and Sarah Walker BMX silver. Disappointed that the NZ hockey chicks are gonna come fourth. They can all be proud of their efforts.

Exactly what i think too.

Most people also watch the Track and Field in the traditional montage style so commonly used by the broadcasters, basically mixing 4 competitions at the same time, with 80 % focus on running.

Watching the montage mode is basically killing any opportunity of getting into the competition because you are only served, 1-2 jumps/throws every 10 mins in between some running.

Still, it baffles me how normal people, tend to think the olympics is all about swimming or track and field. (By the way, swimming is way more intense and exciting than the sprinting).

I have tried to explain to people how exciting biking, archery, fencing, shooting and gymnastics can be but everyone basically, thinks that all those sports are "boring" even though they never watch them. I personally get more emotional when watching these nail biting tense sports than say most T&F...................................................................

Obviously we're hosts and interest is going to be higher, but the BBC interactive coverage has been excellent and has made it much easier to poke aorund and watch the more obscure sports. I think the more obscure ones have proved more popular than some of the mainstream ones.

At-least with big countries like USA, China and Britain i understand if their media is mostly only focusing on their athletes performances since all those 3 countries, have actually had gold raining down everyday...

Never thought I'd hear the words 'Britain' and 'gold raining down every day' in the same sentence! lol

'The great thing about Bmx is that we could have this same race again and the results would be completely different'

Still don't quite understand why Bmx is an Olympic sport but congrats to the winners

Why is this repeated when it's not true and nothing indicates it is?

Not falling is part of the game, like it is in short track speed skating, skicross, snowboard, alpine events even. Sometimes you just fall and there's no way around it, but that's sports for you.

Good work girls, bronze in hockey. Should have beaten Argentina though, for a Dutch rematch. Played well after under performing since the China match.

isn't that sort of the point of bmx? should 110 meter hurdles have 3 runs because it's likely someone will fall?

But they have the multiple runs in all the previous races except the final. Hurdles is always one race. I guess it is almost like if the finals for volleyball or tennis were one set and one set only.

Bit hard to decide that considering how disorganised women's sevens is. NZ didn't even compete in the London tournament this year and, as far as I'm aware, that was the first tournament for years.

Should be really interesting to see what happens to sevens in the next few years (especially with the women). I imagine that a few countries will start investing in it a bit more now that there's an Olympic Gold on the line. I also imagine we'll see quite a few international XV players making appearances in Rio (like a few ABs :D ).

Because from my ignorant point of view of the sport it offers little to me in the way of excitement or involvement, and leaves nothing that makes me want to know more. Also factoring in that probability seems to play a major factor and that personally I don't tend to enjoy much sports that I feel won't challenge me athletically might also play a role. I could of course be completely wrong but as a spectator that's what I see which leaves me uninterested.

I don't want to see XVs playing in sevens. Let the seven's specialists play, who's job it is to play sevens day-in-day out. XV players already get their recognition on the world stage.

One of the things I've heard is that non-rugby playing nations are looking to target woman's rugby for a medal opportunity. China is suppose to be seriously build up their woman's side for Rio.

Actually, I've seen an awful lot of times when the BBC have shown events on the major channels which still have no GB involvement. Only when there's no live content that involves GB, understandably, but it's there. My housemate was watching the women's football final yesterday live on broadcast television, and I've definitely seen non-GB hockey matches played out on TV too.

So you wouldn't be okay with Liam Messam making an appearance even though he used to be the captain of the NZ sevens team? That's the kind of appearances I'm mostly talking about.

And you can't really talk, you'll be able to select your team from the English, Welsh and Scottish teams (so mostly English and Welsh). That's cheating.

Good luck to China getting a decent team together. Countries like NZ, Aus and GB already have the talent base, coaches and environment already set up, so it'll be pretty easy for them.
