It's a matter of how fast you can score VS how much time there is.

Down 9 or 10 or whatever it was with 37 seconds, Spain (in a decent display of class, actually) called it and put in their backups. That's relatively common when one team is outclassed/tired/whatever. You can prolong a basketball game to the point of absurdity with fouls, so conceding when you successfully do the math and see that "oh, we really can't win anymore. " is pretty standard.

For all the bad press the NBA and it's players get, it's nice for something like the olympics to temporarily offset that. The NBA season is pretty brutal and they still come over and compete for something that's really less prestigious than a league championship.
