I hope they don't drop the modern pentathlon, it's pretty great (except for the riding portion).
Aye, I love the modern pentathlon, but the riding part seems really random. You could get a horse that really doesn't like the rider, then you're fucked.

Location: Texas

Culture capital of the world right there, he should know!

yeah, Texas is how you British perceive it to be.

I thought the opening ceremony had great highlights and great music selection, but British musical exports are some of the best. The love story part was all downhill.

The closing ceremony should be an announcement to all people in the stadium to GTFO.

You have 20 seconds to comply.

I have to say, I love watching lots of obscure sports like table tennis, horse dancing and basketball for a few weeks. Its such a nice change from the usual. :-)

Yeah. I think the big winner here might be handball. Nobody had heard of it before this Olympics (including the GB team until 4 years ago) but now I'm hearing there's a lot of interest.

I've always wondered why, in a country with such ropey weather, we don't play more indoor sports.

It all depends on the rider.

You can see a rider perform terribly with a horse, and then another rider later on perform great with the same horse.

OK GAF. Now it's all over, let's have some nominations for:

•Highlight of the Games

•Lowpoint of the Games

•Athlete(s) of the Games

•Biggest Villian of the Games

•Funniest Moment of the Games

•Sport you've most enjoyed watching

•GAF Moment of the Games

For all those people shouting about "wah wah wah, the US gets to send more people than other nations" you still have to qualify.

For example, if the US didn't make it outta the FIBAS tournament in basketball, they aren't going to the Olympics.

US doesn't just get to show up and have an automatic bid. Only the host nation gets that benefit.

- Mo Farah's 10k Victory
- Cav in the road race on the first day
- Usain Bolt
- Gatlin
- Bert le Clos' two interviews on the BBC
- Track Cycling

There's still about 2 hours to go. Lots of boxing?
Lots of montages!

That's part of the reason why host nations receive an average 40% medal bump in their final tally. More teams sent = more opportunities to medal.

???
Hasn't handball been part of the olympics since 1972? It seems to be only a lot of americans who never heard of it before and think it's the kid wall game.

it will probably at least be 12 years till the olympics comeback to our timezone. :(

Candidates for 2020 are Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo. That's one in a central European timezone, one in and eastern european timezone and one on the opposite side of the world. That's pretty good odds.

Very, very proud of our country (UK) hosting an amazing Olympics and doing brilliant for considering how small of a country and how small our sports budget and centres has been compared to other countries and we've hit it right out of the park to show that England still has it. Such a proud moment for me :)

•Highlight of the Games - Team GB's Men's Gymnastic Team Bronze Win!

•Lowpoint of the Games - Victoria Pendelton being DQ and losing a gold.

•Athlete(s) of the Games - Beth Tweddel

•Biggest Villian of the Games - Anna Mears

•Funniest Moment of the Games - Usain Bolt and Wenlock posing together.

•Sport you've most enjoyed watching - Gymnastics

•Highlight of the Games Super Saturday, hands down.

•Lowpoint of the Games The DQs in track cycling, or in general, all the dodgy judging

•Athlete(s) of the Games Mo Farrah

•Biggest Villian of the Games Justin Gaitlin

•Funniest Moment of the Games Pole vault stick snapping.

•Sport you've most enjoyed watching Track Cycling, as always.

And my point is, the US only gets to send so many teams/athletes because we qualify and have to qualify just like all the other non-host nations.
I think a lot of the USA's success has to do with the mentality surrounding competitive sports. There is a lot more emphasis on it from a young age when compared with countries like the UK.

That must contribuit a small % to getting more medals for the home team. If they wernt good enough to qualify on their own then they're certainly not in medal contention. I doubt actually it results in any extra medals.
