Will buy.

Day 1

There's a separate company, BBC Worldwide, that receives no subsidies, and sells stuff like this.

But what exactly are they selling? Content created by the public, right? Just creating a separate company that gets no funding directly doesn't lessen the fact that such a company is reselling what we paid for, surely? Like I said, if we already paid for the content then I dont mind paying for the plastic case and the DVD disc itself, but these products are full price comparable to movies and other collection sets. I can understand it for other countries, but whats the purpose behind BBC Worldwide in the UK as a company for profit?

Stop whining. You really think the BBC can afford to produce a blu-ray disk and ship it for free to millions of houses?

Didn't I just say they should charge for that (only) in the very post you quoted?

Your taxes don't pay for everything, it's as simple as that. They could raise your taxes instead of supplementing their funding with these products, but would you really want that?

BBC Worldwide licenses the BBC's content/brands to use for commercial reasons. And BBC gets the money, meaning they don't need to hike the licence fee.

Jesus. Are you just being deliberately contrarian?

All profits from BBC's commercial endeavours (DVDs, sub-licensing, international sales etc) are fed back into next year's budget.

I'm sure there is a fair amount of editing involved which costs money. They don't just slap the footage on a disc and hope for the best.

Usain Bolt.

When you overshadow the most successful Olympian of all time in two consecutive Games, that's when you know you're the greatest athlete in the world.

Who, but the public, funds the BBC exactly? If the rationale here is that those public funds do not pay for the packaging and distribution of DVDs and Blu-Rays, then I accept that, and like I said, we should pay for that, but nothing more because it comes across as an attempt to resell the same product. There are some things the BBC cant do, that are beyond its budget, for example running their 606 website forum (they had to close that down due to finances), but media that is directly paid for by the public? Shouldn't be normal pricing on the shelves IMO

Your license fees do not fully fund all the programming on the BBC. These types of products supplement the shortfall in funding between the costs of the BBC programming and the funding it receives from the license fee. They could raise your license fees instead of selling these products; I guess that's what you're arguing for, more taxes.

Hypothetically speaking, if we did pay more through our licence fees, would these DVDs become 'free' or offered at a cut price? Whats the likelihood of that?

Ok that should keep him happy for a few hours :)

How can i watch the bbc montages? Any links please!

Live only right now, so only if you've got a means of watching the BBC live. There have been several in the thread in the past.

Edit: Your call if you do, of course, but can I suggest that people from elsewhere who did so give serious consideration to importing that DVD or Blu-Ray (or indeed purchasing your local version if it exists)? It'll help fund more content of that quality!

If there was no BBC Worldwide, I doubt they'd raise license fees high enough to start offering free or discounted physical merchandise for all license payers.

The BBC are masters of the art of montage I swear I don't think iv'e ever seen them do a bad one this is why I will miss F1 on the BBC

I was in London today watching the wrestling finals and ceremonies, and was able to get home to Manchester within three hours of leaving the venue. The logistics and public transport organisation has been exemplary.
