Wii U Release Day Thread

They really screwed up this Wii compatibility thing...

Better than XBox 360 or PS3 - the 360 couldn't play many old XBox games at launch, and each system updated unlocked more and more (but of course never all). And PS3 started out fully backwards compatible with smoothing, but then they switched to software emulation which couldn't play all games, and then ripped the ability out of the console. Wii U can play all Wii games perfectly, except ones that required the Gamecube controller ports.

Eh, not really. Works the exact same way Gamecube compatibility worked with the Wii (once you start a GC game it ceases being a Wii). It's not perfect, sure, but the fact that it is there at all is a good thing.

I hate Walmart and its shitty workers who treat their customers like shit.

The Walmart I have my layaway at said I couldn't pay my remaining penny and get my system because they couldn't access the layaway computer until 9. I asked if I could talk to a manager about it and he just came back to say the manager confirmed the wait.

This Walmart had sold out of all systems and most games. I ran into a couple and another guy looking all across the city.

i went to another Walmart that had lots of smaller titles but no displays for bigger titles. I asked the guy working in the section if he could look into the boxes sitting by the counter streetdated the 18th if they had any WiiU games in them and he said I'd have to wait 50 minutes for a case-key holder to get off launch :-/ Bullshit,

I apologize for asking what I'm sure has been answered in one of the other thousand threads:

If you buy a game from the Virtual Console can you store it on the external HDD hooked up to a Wii U, or does VC content have to be stored internally on the system?

Wii VC content has to be exactlly like a Wii - so it's stored on internal storage or on SD card, nothing else (it's really the only use for the SD card slot in the Wii U).

(Educated guess) The Virtual Console does not yet exist as part of the Wii U eShop so you can only buy VC games from the WiiShop (in Wii mode) so I believe you can only store those on SD cards (or the internal storage) and not on a hard drive. Once the VC is part of the Wii U then I would guess they could be stored on a hard drive.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Good god the Black Ops 2 instruction manual is horrible. It's literally a one page safety hazard pamphlet.

Thanks for answering. So...retail game stuff can be thrown on an exHDD, while VC data can be thrown on an SD card.

I work at Walmart. They're full of shit. Any manager can access the layaway register after hours.

Anyone downloaded Mario or any others? Is BO2 available in the store? Is it worth a shit as far as resolution and framerate? The wait is killing me here. AC3?

Walked into a WalMart without a preorder was able to snag the last Deluxe. Was 10th in line. Was going to go to BestBuy in the morning to try my luck, so I am glad I got it now.

I don't know how good getting BLOPS 2 is on the Wii U though, since the multiplayer will probably have much less people playing... (due to the install base)

Anyone else have absolutely no problem getting a Wii U? I didn't preorder because I didn't think I'd have the money, but my family pooled together to get me the funds for a birthday present. Thought I'd have to stand in line at walmart for 13 hours like I did with the Wii, but I walked in like half an hour before they went on sale and had no issue. Gaming is apparently dead in northwestern Ohio

Though I had to drive across town to the other walmart because the first one didn't have Mario U. Yeah...

Funny thing is I actually do think you'll be able to walk into the store tomorrow and pick one up. We had quite a few left over at the Walmart after everyone got their pre-orders.

Went to walmart in gainesville, fl a little after midnight. Only 6 people in line. Picked up a deluxe system. They didn't have Mario or Zombie U so I guess I'll be going out in the morning. Totally unorganized there. I heard the clerks debating how many they should sell as they had 26 layaway orders. It looked like they had more than 26 left as I was the last in line and they still had plenty of boxes, two systems per box.

damn, that's kind of crazy. I was there when the Wii came out, and there were at least 30 people in both Wal Marts in Gainesville and all the hick towns around it. I couldn't get one at all on launch day.

Person in front of me snagged the last Deluxe package, so I'm left with the Basic Set. Thinking about taking it back or selling it. :(

Fuck Wal-Mart and their dumbass layaway system. So many bums putting $25.00 down and letting it sit until 12/15. Fuck you!

I went to two Walmarts in Raleigh, NC about an hour before launch and all the first come first serve units were already taken by people waiting in line so YMMV, depending on where you live.

The Wal-Marts are selling out big time. Best bet is to hit Target at 8am. Best Buy is fucked.

*sees pics of game cases*

Anybody going eShop only? Just me? Ok...

Since Nintendo expressed interest in having Nintendo Network work for future consoles, I'm probably going eShop only on first-party titles. Hopefully then they're "future-proof", at least until the games need to be reworked for Nintendo's 4K console.

That's weird considering the original Wii had at least thirty people in line at the same location six years ago. Obviously a much different launch climate. Wondering how it'll manage this upcoming week.

It was just like a dozen people at Fred Meyer. Everyone got deluxe ones. I got mine, Mario, 4000 wii points, and an amazing bargain bin Wii game I forgot even existed....klonoa remake.

Now to commence unboxing and updates.

Which Fred Meyer were you at?
