Is anybody else having an issue where the image on the screen is too wide? I've checked all the aspect ratios for my TV and receiver and they are all set to "Normal". But, the left and right sides of the screen seem a bit cut off.

I'm having the same issue, man. I've got it connected via a Wii component cable and set to 720p. From what I've found online, we're not alone as far as the issue, but there's no workable solution either. :-/

Your TV is cropping the picture, this is called "overscan": Google your TVs model or manufacturer & "disable overscan". This will get rid of the issue (for many models, overscan can only be disabled for digital inputs & is mostly called by very different names).

Unfortunately, some TV suffer from permanent overscan that can't be disabled even on HDMI input.

I had this issue. Had to switch my TV ratio to scan so it would fit properly.

I must say, the TV functionality is fucking great, and painless. The set up was done perfectly, and switching between the two couldn't be any easier.

That's exactly what I was talking about - you disabled overscan. In general, overscan should be disabled for all digital inputs as it is pointless and only serves to worsen the picture quality significantly (by further zooming in) and reduces viewable area (by cropping the edges of the signal by about 5%). Overscan is a hold-over from NTSC/PAL/SECAM.

- 1GB day one firmware update via slow servers.
- Individual updates for every single game so they can access Miiverse.
- Slow, laggy operating system menus.
- Almost if not every 360/PS3 port has inferior visuals and/or performance to their current gen counterparts.
- GamePad and pro controllers unusable for character control in NSMBU multiplayer.
- Crashes/freezes.
- User accidentally accesses debug version of main menu.
- Another user accidentally access admin control of Miiverse, reading messages from one of the Miiverse creators/programmers.
- Nintendo IDs tied to systems, no option to transfer yet.
- Audio/video tied to HDMI or component, no option for one on either.
- TV remote control does not work with receivers. Therefore if you wish to use surround sound via HDMI, you have no TV GamePad control.

Most unbelievably mangled console launch in history.
I know I'm gonna get shit for this lol, but most of this list is just GAF being pedantic, or rare issues one or two people have experienced.

But here we go, GAF anti-hype machine in full force right now.

The real issues are, like, waiting 10 secs to load some stuff, and you can't do this or that with the GamePad... yet.

Pretty normal launch IMHO.

hey guys! im posting this from my wii u. :)

The thing about all the points you cited is that only the issue with account binding and the poor quality of the bigger 3rd party launch ports are the really serious issues.

How many people having a shit at Nintendo's expense are those using the system right now, and, crashes aside, hating the experience? Most of the people I've talked to (including through Miiverse - imagine that) don't give a shit about the laundry list of everything supposedly critically fatal.

Frankly, I've been enjoying it all day. Am I an idiot with low standards? I dunno. I built a good gaming PC and keep Windows clean because I like nice things. Slow primary app switching aside so far, I am finding the system a lot of fun to just plain use. Miiverse is great. The gamepad is a lot of fun. Everyone bitching about the "low" resolution, whatever - the actual quality of the screen looks great to me.

Came back on GAF after all day, and find that apparently this is the worst game console of all time, Nintendo has proven they don't deserve to be in the industry, etc. Bullshit. Don't buy into the launch day panic, backlash, "now is our chance to eviscerate Nintendo" shit that's bound to be flying around.

Account issues are a problem for the future, not hurting anyone this moment - but it has to be taken care of. Priority item #1.

Aside from that, some further OS nips and tucks, related to expanding the chat application and app loading.

Not even going to get into this stuff about networks stability - it's ridiculous to castigate Nintendo this fast when everyone's network has shit the bed during epic launches, holidays, and because, well, going down for months due to hacking.

Preach it. Console launches have hiccups and most of this shit will be fixed eventually. This community is fucking embarrassing in how it responds to everything like it is literally the worst thing to happen in their lives.

Anyone else notice considerable light leaks on the GamePad LCD? It's really noticeable at least on my screen on dark or black areas playing Nintendoland. I know all backlit LCDS have this problem or at least I think. Anyone else notice this? I tired to take a picture (sorry for the poor quality) using a black background image. Mine is mostly noticeable on the left side though sometimes on the right.

Tonight in the news, man stands in front of the anti-hype train. There were no survivors.

With the amount of hype the last 2 years, this launch was doomed to be bad in gafs mind anyways. These other things are just icing on that cake.

The Wii U's operating system seems amazingly rushed, even by console launch standard. This kind of performance is absolutely unacceptable. Consumers are right to demand a working product that isn't dog slow in every aspect and crashes frequently.

Yes that is exactly what is happening. This is the worst thing that has happened in human history.

Some of the stuff like day 1 patch complaints is clearly just people complaining to complain.

Software these days has day 1 patches. That's life. I can't remember the last time I played a 360 game that didn't have an immediate patch.

PS3 owners have told us for 5 years that constant patching was not a problem, now suddenly it's a deal-breaker.

Now stuff like taking 10 seconds to load simple OS apps - yeah that's a legit complaint.

A little bit hyperbolic... what makes it a non-working product? Everything works reasonably well for me. Not A+ but definitely not a D or F and I expect most issues will be patched in the coming weeks.

Short of it: Native Wii U games I've played - NSMB U, NintendoLand, Nano Assault Neo - look extremely crisp, 720p or not. Really good lighting and shadows, great textures. Great IQ. 3rd party launch ports vary; Sonic Racing Transformed has parity with the other consoles except more stable / locked framerate, maybe a bit better lighting. Some of the other bigger 3rd party games have performance issues.

Sorry, I meant original Wii games through backward compatibility? I know there's no up-ressing going on or anything, but the Wii's IQ was famously bad, even in comparison to the Gamecube. There any improvement at all on the Wii U?

Edit: Oh, awesome! ^^^^

Yes that is exactly what is happening. This is the worst thing that has happened in human history.

It was called the most mangled launch in history.

Despite Sega Saturn, Turbo Duo, PS3, etc.

"Most unbelievably mangled console launch in history."

This is about as objectively false as a subjective statement can be.

You know, I could have sworn there was a button you could press to take the game off the tv and put it on the pad. I can't seem to find this function. Perhaps I am an idiot. I suppose I'll just play Mario single player and change the tv channel.

Any impressions of Nano Assault Neo? I don't want to blind-buy this but it looks fantastic.

Yeah, I just searched for my TV and disabling overscan, and it sounds like I'm shit out of luck. Yay.

In the menu it's on the touch pad (top right corner) in games it varies. Some games support it, others don't. It's not a physical button though, it'll either be 1:1 with the TV by itself or it'll be an option in the pause menu to make it display on the pad.

Mine was doing this in the eshop but the settings allowed me to fix it.

what?

Hasn't nintendo said repeatedly that wii games will not be upscaled?

I think he misspoke. I *THINK* he was saying that the Wii U still outputs the video signal to 1080p in Wii mode (that is, 480p stretched to 1080p before being sent to the TV versus it outputting a 480p image that's scaled by your TV). This could amount to no difference in video quality or it could still give a decent visual improvement based on what type of filter it uses.

I really like the browser.
posting from it right now.

I'm actually very impressed with the browser as well. Check out Youtube, it puts the video in a seperate full screen tab on the controller. No dropped frames, and you can easily switch the tab off to make comments while it still plays in the background or on the TV.

Someone more technical test Wii games please.

Wii U is not going to upres games but it could output a high-res signal with decent upscaler, as opposed to the Wii which relied on the TV upscaler.

hmm, that makes more sense

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I LUCKED OUT.

So after spending all day unsuccessfully trying to find a deluxe set, I went to Target with my presale card for the basic set.

So I hand my card to the sales clerk and he says "Ok we have 4 consoles in the back for reserve, 2 black, 2 white. Which do you want?"

I was totally not expecting this. I said to him skeptically "does it matter?"

He says "Nah man. Pick one"

So I said "the deluxe, if that's possible"

So the clerk goes to the stockroom and a few minutes later he brings the box and rings me up.

So now I'm on my way home with the deluxe set, even though the card said basic! I can't believe my luck!

Would be awesome if someone could post a comparison of Mario Galaxy 2 running on WiiU HDMI vs Wii component. Any noticeable audio improvement?

Arg...When I play NSMBU in 1080p (which the tv can handle) the screen keeps going black for 3 seconds every 5 mins or so. I called Nintendo, they think it's probably the tv and I should try it on another set first. I'll have to take it somewhere, cause I don't have another HD set.

Any ideas what's happening? It plays fine in any other resolution.

So did this first update take forever for anyone else? It's been an hour and a half and I'm about 25% complete. I really just kind of wanted to mess around tonight...oh well.

FINALLY it's actually updating instead of downloading.

By the way, I don't know if anybody here really cares, but I did an unboxing video of the Basic Set for any other poor saps like me who couldn't get the Deluxe. I also compare the size of the gamepad to the Vita. Lol, if you thought the Vita was big!
