After a day with my Wii U I wanted to add my thoughts to the thread. I might jump around a bit but I'll try to keep my thoughts organized.
Pick up yesterday at my GS was simple and painless. The only painful part was the damage I did to my debit card thanks to the 6 games I bought with my Wii U. Here's what I decided to buy with it:
Nintendo Land came with it-haven't really had time to play it but I did update it and got to see what it does while it's loading up...good God that music!!! and then what it does at the title screen, even more neat music and those spotlights hitting those curtains!! I honestly can't wait to see what's behind those curtains!
Super Mario U-going to definitely play some tonight in bed. There's just one wall and less than 20 feet from where my Wii U is and my room so it should easily make it to my room. Super Mario World U? sign me up!
Epic Mickey 2-looks good and it supposedly supports OfF-TV play so I'm going to play that way I think
Darksiders 2 and Mass Effect 3-same deal as Epic Mickey 2
Warriors Orochi 3-It looks fantastic, I did enjoy Dynasty Warriors on Vita, what I have gotten through at least so this should be fun.
Scribblenauts U-Have read great things about these games the last few years so I figured now was a good time to try one out. Nintendo characters being included is what convinced me to get it honestly
Damage to debit card yesterday: 320 bucks
I can say from my experience with the gamepad so far: It just works, period. You really have to see it and experience it for yourself. I don't think any pics, or descriptions really do it justice. I'm not a huge graphics freak at all but it's very crisp and clear. I have no trouble seeing it. What is going to take time to get used to however is there's times where you'll need to look at the gamepad, then the TV or vice versa. Also, it's extremely weird to hear sound coming from both the gamepad and TV. That's gonna take getting used to too. Having no problems with touching/swiping with stylus either. It seems to respond well and really no complaints with that.
Initial set-up was painless. Found my router right away and got a stable connection to it. I was a bit concerned after reading some people here saying they had trouble with that but I lucked out. It didn't drop out at all during the update download either. That update took about 2 1/2 hours to download though-only bad part about the set-up. It takes 1 hour to download 500 MB on my current connection, so with it taking 2 1/2 hours I'd say the download size is 1.2 to 1.3 GB. NO where near the 5 GB size that was being reported. Actual installation of the update went smooth but took closer to 10 mins. some of it went very quickly, other parts where it's moving stuff into place it seemed to drag.
The creation of the Mii/System account-painless. Very easy to understand and get through. Very good music for the Mii creation stuff too! The Mii it made with my picture looks a lot like me, I'm happy with the Mii I got!
Nintendo Network account sign up was again painless. Make sure if you have a Club Nintendo account to go straight to the EShop after all the setup stuff to link that to your Nintendo Network account. That's how you register your Wii U with Club Nintendo and honestly I wish the Wii and 3DS did it this way-simple and fast.
After all the setup stuff was done, that inital load into the Wii U Menu/Wara Wara Plaza was EXTREMELY slow, probably a good 20 seconds. EShop load up was pretty quick. Wara Wara/Wii U Menu loaded MUCH quicker though when I left the EShop. Wara Wara Plaza had no messages or pictures last night. This afternoon it really came to life though!
I will say this after this afternoon. I'm not seeing the complaints over the loading at all. My Wii U boots fast and so does my Wii U Menu and Plaza. Jumping between stuff is very smooth and snappy on mine. Though I use it on my iPad, Netflix did load very very slowly however. The rest of it is honestly very fast on my end. My first thought was the extremely slow load times people are experiencing has GOT to be Nintendo Network/internet connection related. It's gotta be, I can't think of what else it could be for those having trouble. They will improve it over time I'm sure. But so far all I'm getting is a very fast snappy experience. I must have gotten very lucky with that.
I will really sit down and play at least Nintendo Land and Mario tonight, but just from the Gamepad/UI stuff I can say I'm incredibly impressed. All the integration just works, period. MiiVerse sounds really neat and I am MUCH much more likely to use that over Facebook or Twitter. I'll definitely go through that some tonight too and Yeah some posts and some of those drawings-some have incredible artistic talent and I wish I could draw like that! On a good day I can kinda sorta draw Yoshi-well as close as I can get, haha and I can draw the Mario World logo when I try. Other than that stick people pretty much!
I'm very pleased with the purchase so far. The sadness over the 320 bucks of damage I did yesterday will probably disappear very fast.
I have just one question: How do I access Off-TV Play in the games that support it? I'm asking because there was NO sound coming from the Gamepad when I started up Epic Mickey 2, Darksiders 2, and Mass Effect 3 when I checked to make sure they work. Just not seeing how to do it with those games.
Will definitely add my NN ID in the other thread right now, please feel free to add me, the more the merrier! I do like seeing all the different Miis people come up with!
P.S. Sorry for the long post, I'm trying to get better with condensing my thoughts but wanted to make sure I wrote all I wanted to!
