Wii U Next Big Steps.

This. Miyamoto talked at least twice about cards when interviewed about the gamepad/NFC. This thread for the last interview, in French.

It needs some game announcements.

Hopefully, for the system, Nintendo has some nice exclusives for the second half of the year (3D Mario and Retro new IP please) and can get some third-party Japanese games like Sonic or Final Fantasy.

Pretty much. It's insanely worrying to look at the 2013 release schedule for Wii U right now. I really hope Pikmin 3 wasn't pushed back because they have nothing else for early next year. 3rd party games outside the launch window need a big boost as well.

You're saying that Wonderful 101 isn't pushing hardware? ;)

WiiFit U I think is coming out soonish and should help the system.

That's what I've been thinking since E3. For a moment, with these fall conferences, they've made me believe that this ,,launch window focus'' wasn't just some farce to cover up that they simply couldn't get anything better ready, but now Pikmin and W101 don't even make it out until march in EU anymore and both are arguably the only somewhat big efforts from Nintendo themselves for longterm fans. And really, after playing it myself I don't think it's possible to completely erase the evidence that Pikmin was originally a Wii game. Which makes it incredibly dubious that they have to hold this back instead of getting it out at launch.

If the next E3 conference isn't convincing, it's save to say that their entry into HD development has utterly failed imo. And no, they haven't abandoned E3 for the sake of these Directs, the major announcements will still happen there.

Yoshi's Land sounds awesome already, Metal Gear Solid will likely be Revengence, and the Resident Evil will likely be 6 unfortunately. A new MGS or RE for this thing would be fucking awesome though. REmake with the menu on the screen so no pause break would increase tension even higher.

Meh, Yoshi Island DS was really meh and Yoshi Story was meh also. So I wonder what they will do with the series on the Wii U.

Well that's really something! I didn't know such interview existed. I'll just add iin my defence that i thought about the card game as soon as it was unveiled the pad had NFC. So it's pretty much confirmed now. Im surprised this isn't disscused more often.
The next big step is OS updates, and fix some of the minor/major issues over the next couple of months
Of course, but it's very obvious. Nintendo is reserving half of the total amount of RAM just for the OS, so there's a ton of stuff in their plans.

What cool be nice for the sake of disscussion is pin pointing exactly what important functionality could be added to the OS.

Honestly, this is pretty optimistic from you.

Agreed. These days, we need more puzzle games that aren't lazy clones of Bejeweled or Puzzle Bobble.

I was thinking that Nintendo might hold off NFC functionality and use it as a hook next holiday season or in 2014 to keep the system feeling new to general audiences. It looks that they may in fact be doing that. Beyond that, I think they should push hard for additional services and hardware compatibility to add to TVii, and I really really think they should pursue cellphone-like subscription deals with TV/Internet/Phone providers, especially considering that their product is much more useful for people who get TV service than, say, the bare tablets that they're using as a subscription bonus these days.

I'd kick in for that if the up-front discount were steep enough.

Can you even imagine an NFC Pokemon game with little Pokemons being sold at stores, in Happy Meals, limited edition ones free when you go see Pokemon 12 3D in theaters... it would be the biggest thing ever.

what will they release next holiday season as 3DS and Wii U titles to combat the PS4/Durango?

SSB4 or bust...with Pokemon 3D shortly after...

I bet watching the Spyro figurine games most have deployed a massive heart attack waves at Nintendo Japan. This are the type of products ideas Nintendo loves but hates when a competitor beat them to market.

Btw, how's Pokemon popularity these days in the States?

U know, it would be funny and sad at the same time if all of their games were named like that
it works tho :P

Pikmin 3 sounds like a good next step.

Can it really be described as "Big"? The last million seller in the series was over a decade ago. Unless you count Nintendoland.

It is a good step, because it keeps Nintendo's offerings broader in category and higher in quality. But it doesn't leave that much of an impact.

LOL, do people still think Nintendo has this super secret stash of games they're just waiting to announce? That they're just keeping silent for strategic purposes?

I don't know about anyone else, but what I learned from the Wii U launch fiasco is that when Nintendo keeps silent about certain details, it's not a good thing.

The following is merely a thought based on assumption; but what I really like is how, unless they plan on making some changes to the actual console, that if they redesign the Gamepad it would be cheaper than having to buy the entire package every time they decide to come out with an upgrade. Now obviously as I already noted, this is only if they don't redesign the console itself with the possible Gamepad revisions.

While I like the Gamepad, it definitely reminds me of the original Nintendo DS. It was functional, it worked, but it was very bulky. There's absolutely room for improvement: slightly higher quality screen, smaller build, and the button layout could definitely be better as Black Ops II is nigh unplayable for me on the Gamepad. The console itself doesn't really seem to need any changes; it looks sleek and I have no problem with the size.

So unless they come up with some incentives to rebuy the whole shebang, I'm totally cool with the occasional Gamepad revision as it wouldn't cost as much as the entire package and I don't think the console needs a revision, at least not for a while or at least until some serious issues are found with it.

It's big for me. Maybe not for the people wanting a 4K resolution capacitive multi-touch redesigned GamePad with an 80 mile radius.

Pikmin 3 is just an example of the real next big step, which is to release games. That will forever be the reason people buy a game console.

Well it's better than thinking that Pikmin, Wonderful 101, and Wii U Fit will be their lineup until E3. If Nintendo pulls a Vita and actually does have nothing else planned for all of next year it's going to be a rough year. Main reason why buying at launch is out of the question with so many question marks in the air

F U is all they need, really.

Next step (before Christmas) is OS and stability upgrades.

OS needs to be faster, all the features need to be implemented, and it shouldn't crash so much.

Yes. I'm very impressed with the controller and a lot of the aspects of the system. But frankly what we need to hear right now are more 2013 titles.

this is a lot more alarming for 3ds's first party output

I can't think of a single 2013 game for japan if we exclude stuff like Luigi's Mansion

Next big Steps?
  • native Virtual Console
  • faster OS
  • eShop demos

Two out of three should be accomplished by the end of the year... hopefully VC comes next.
After that: Game announcements to wash away some of the bad press the Wii U has gotten so far.

I don't know about anyone else, but what I learned from the Wii U launch fiasco is that when Nintendo keeps silent about certain details, it's not a good thing.

But people assured me that the reason Nintendo were being secretive with their OS and online implementation was because they didn't want Sony/MS to rip off their ideas.

price drop 3ds style, yeah! XD

nah, serious answer: XENOBLADE 2

and Metroid U by Retro

and Super Mario Universe

Man, I would kill for a sequel to Xenoblade. That game was so good. Hopefully we get it. I've been burned before, been waiting on that sequel to Shadow Complex for years now.

For what it's worth, Reggie teasd us yesterday about possibly holding back some additiional launch window surprises:
I think we will continue to surprise the fans with announcements and information. I would not go so far as to say you know everything in our launch window.”

Besides pikmin what the hell is coming out on this thing before next fall?

Launch Window games up to March 2013: Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Aliens: Colonial Marines ,Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate HD, Wii Fit U, Game & Wario up through March.

Confirmed TBA games: Smash Bros. 4, Bayonetta 2, Dragon Quest X, an original IP from Straight Right as well as another title from it that is based on an unconfirmed big franchise set for 2013 release date. No idea if the latter is a port or not. There's also Ubisoft that is still working on Ghost Recon Online port. Lastly, EA confirmed Need for Speed: Most Wanted port for 2013 release.

More eShop games: Toki Tori 2 (next month release?) , The Cave, 1,001 Spikes, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, Karateka. WayForward developer also still has plans to do a new Shantae eShop game for Wii U (not sure if its actually new or just a remake of the new one headed to 3DS)

Other stuff: Nintendo also said that it will eventually make Virtual Console games compatible for off-tv play support. Unfortunately, no details have been given beyond that.

I'm only interested in knowing what games are coming down the pipe. Specifically Nintendo games.

we all know their next steps....

mario iteration, mario party, mario sports games, mario kart, SSB, zelda, DK, animal crossing, pikmin, metroid, kirby, starfox, new super mario bros u 2.

lots of peripherals

There won't be a NSMBU2, and this simplifies a lot of the revivals and crazy shit Nintendo did last generation.

and maybe multi touch.

I really don't see Nintendo going for multitouch anytime soon. That'd mean tons of licensing issues and having to deal directly with companies like Apple and their patents. Their consoles still don't have DVD/Blu Ray playback to avoid licensing fees, so I don't see them ever going for multitouch in their own hardware.

I think the next steps are just to deliver on what they said was coming, i.e. Nintendo TVii, rolling out the eShop and Miiverse as web services, etc. I'm at work and jonesing to check into Miiverse, so I'm looking forward to that.

t.

Ehh..best case scenario is probably Need for Speed and Splinter Cell.

.

I mean..obviously they have games to announce for next year. It doesn't take a conspiracy theorist to know that.

Went a lil crazy with speculations, what sort of things any of you could see making significant impact on the console?

Well, if we're going a little crazy then maybe a projector built into the back of the pad so you could play big screen on any wall. I cringe what the IQ whores on GAF would say about it though. :P

Who knows, it's probably small fry stuff. Plus, it's hard to take Reggie seriously nowadays. I suppose we may hear about it via Nintendo Direct or maybe at the Game Developer's Conference in late March.

Ehh..best case scenario is probably Need for Speed and Splinter Cell.

I forgot about Need for Speed port since EA confirmed it for 2013.
