Inventor of 'Pong' says Nintendo's Wii U, launching this week (in the uk) , 'will fail'
Nolan Bushnell, the inventor of 1972 arcade tennis game Pong, and considered one of the 'fathers' of videogames says he is 'baffled' by Nintendo's New Wii U - and that the machine will not succeed.

"I actually am baffled by it," Bushnell told the New York Times. "I don’t think it’s going to be a big success."

Bushnell said that today's consoles such as Xbox 360 and PS3 are already capable of superb graphics - and that there is 'no need' for a new launch.

"These things will continue to sputter along, but I really don’t think they’ll be of major import ever again. It feels like the end of an era to me."

What was the last console Bushnell released?

I've seen people saying that changing Miiverse posts to English Only or turning them off has stopped freezing.

I haven't tried turning them off but I set mine to 'English Only' and had 2 hard locks while playing Nintendo Land during the Octopus Dance attraction. These are the only times the console has ever stopped working for me and this didn't happen until after I changed this setting but I doubt the two are related. This is after several hours of gameplay (20 or more) of Nintendo Land, NSMBU, Just Dance 4, and Zombi U.

Both lock ups were one right after the other and left both the console and gamepad completely unresponsive. I had to disconnect the power cord from the unit to recover. I think the second lock up happened right after the first because I inserted the game almost immediately after powering back up from the first crash, instead of waiting for the OS and all the menus to load.

So I picked up a LAN adapter, and I'm getting slower speeds than I did with WiFi according to various bandwidth tests through the browser. What gives? Do Nyko LAN adapters suck or something?

i never really looked into it but are Eshop games sold for cash or points?

I believe the correct answer is "both".

When I bought Sonic Racing, the purchase option that I selected was called "pay for the rest with dollars" or something to that effect. Seemed to me that when you purchase a game, it'll pull from your points first, and if there's any remaining balance on the transaction, you could dump it on your card.

Since I had no points, it just all went on the card as a straight credit card purchase.

...I have no intention of ever dealing with points unless they are just added to my account via Deluxe Package rebates.

Pro Controller is totally half-baked. Apparently it doesn't have motion control so it's not just "Gamepad minus screen", so it can't be considered a default option. Of course, just as they allowed spinning to be a button for the Gamepad, so could they have attached limited NSMB-type tilting to a stick.

Shopto order processing!!!!

Got Friday booked off work (though it'll probably arrive Thursday), all ready for some Zombi action. Hype levels increasing.........

Glad I was warned about all these issues with the Pro Controller before I bought it.

So when I update this thing, will it turn off because of inactivity? Do I have to turn off the inactivity timer?

My local GAME called me today confirming my Wii U for launch and asking if I wanted to go to the midnight opening.......damn attending and setting my Wii U to download the patch while i'm asleep would be nice but I have other plans :/

Target is helping spread the misinformation:

I actually thought, for a brief moment, that they had started selling or pre-ordering Gamepads seperately. :(

I had, at least, three people on three separate instances ask me if they can buy the Gamepad for this Wii.

Terrible.

It's the 3DS situation all over again, all they had to do was change the 'U' into a '2' and there'd be no confusion.

At least they had an excuse with the 3DS. I wouldn't have been able to resist that play on words either.

Having to buy two 44.99$ controller from an older console generation to play a new generation game in co-op is totally new to me and I have been buying consoles for 25 years.

I know new consoles and all that involve spending a lot of money, but it seems like Nintendo pushed it far for people who never had a Wii. Way to get new customers to join you or to get people to come back to Nintendo! The console looks great, I just did not expect to have to do this.

The whole controller scenario on Wii U is pretty crazy.

It does actually benefit those that already had a Wii. They don't have to buy a new controller.

If you need some cheap Wii controllers keep your eyes open for Wii Play Motion and FlingSmash sales. The both come with a free WiiMotion controller and you can find them cheaper than paying $40 for the controller alone.

I just got Wii Play Motion at Wal-Mart for $15 for example. Toys R Us has FlingSmash for $22

There would still be confusion. The market needs time to learn what the hell a new product is. Its been out for a week. People who arent in the know see something and start asking questions. Its normal. Most people arent like us who know of something as soon as its announced months before it ever hits stores. Alot of money is spent on deciding stuff like a name, and swaping a U for a 2 is not the end all solution.

Exactly. People need to understand that customers will ask if PS4 games can be played on a PS3 when it launches for months. Commercials need to better show the system + controller as a single entity. It'll happen in time.

Did they try and con you into committing to an accessory pack and extended warranty (£60!!) too?!

*UPS tracking says "end of the day" delivery*
*Leaves "We were here but we're idiots who can't figure out a two-apartment building" note at 10AM*

I am still waiting for this thing.

At least they're interested? It's not great product awareness, but if people want the gamepad, doesn't matter a whole lot if it's a Wii accessory or a new console since the gamepad is always bundled with the Wii U.

Have them hold it at the UPS location. Then go and get it. That's what I'm doing.

It doesn't matter right now, because the Gamepad isn't sold separately.

But, you don't want people to buy a Wii thinking they can "upgrade" it later by just buying the Gamepad.

Still, you're generally right: interest is good.

No. I didn't give them the time to as i was busy at work. If they try and do it on Friday I'll kick off. My budget is for a deluxe, two games and some shop voucher. I remember with the Wii they were forcing people to buy bundles and not selling solo. I put my money down for a £309.99 deluxe and nothing else, it states that on the receipt so they better not try anything.....
