With SD cables, yes. But it doesn't display correctly at all on 4:3 screens.
If you have a 16:9 SDTV, you're good.
I just called my local mm and they said they don't have any idea, what they'll get on Friday, so I shouldn't get my hopes up for a price reduction or the "pay one, get another game half price" deal they are doing in the Netherlands.

The wiiu only comes with a hdmi cable out of the box. The console can use cables from the wii though.
That's what I thought. So how is this true?:
The question was "out of the box", not "if I have a spare Wii".

I'm pretty excited for the upcoming midnight launch in Australia. My local EB is only a 5 minute drive from my house. Unfortunately I'm not getting any retail games, so I'm going to have to wait for New Super Mario Bros. U to download.

Sure it does. The Wii U works just fine on a 4:3 TV. It does letterbox most games, from what I've seen, but they look just fine.

So I've got my Aussie Wii U home tonight. I selected "cancel" when prompted to download the system update (as apparently that makes it download in the background. So...
I've been messing around with it for about an hour and a half, thing is some functions won't work without a system update (such as the youtube app). So I'm like screw this I'll just download the update now. But it tells me "the system is up to date". But the functions still don't work as they require the update.
Basically I can't work out whether the system update isn't live yet in Australia (as the release date isn't for another 2 days) or it is still updating in the background (which I have no way of checking).
Does anyone know the answer to this?

A few here have already received their unit in Australia and Europe. I think it was confirmed that the update isn't live yet.

Each individual app had its own update here. You updated the system but the individual app updates might not be up for your region yet.

I wish I had more time to play ZombiU during the week. By the time I get home in the evening I don't really have the time to devote to it as I would. Only on Friday nights (if I'm home), Saturday and Sunday during the day are when I'll be able to sit down and just play without being interrupted or without being to tired to play. Only have time for a few matches in Black Ops 2 (giving my WiiU a static IP and putting it on my router's DMZ has made playing a lot better as I'm getting better connections on my matches) and a few games in Nintendo Land. The Pikmin, Zelda and Donkey Kong attractions have to be my favorite. I wish the prize game wasn't so random at times. Feel like I'm wasting so much time with it when I spend to many balls to get to the next round. Wish it would just let me pick a price based on how many coins I have at the moment.

Hit the Home button and then click on the downloads icon (to the far right). If the system update shows up in there as downloading, then there's a system update available. If not, there isn't, in which case your Wii U can basically play games only. If you can connect to Miiverse or the store now, it's pre-patched.

There is no downloads icon. No Miiverse either, I'm guessing that comes with the patch. It's definitely not pre-patched.

Mine has been updated to say It's being prepared for dispatch today. If it actually does leave today I'm going to have to reschedule my time off work from Friday and Monday to tomorrow! Also ZombiU had been dispatched from Zavvi too, yey.
I've never preordered a console before but this time the store is calling to get the wiiu the night before launch and with a buffet. I don't exactly picture the whole scene, a console and a game to carry and choosing whatever foods they are serving, and for about thirty people, seems a bit awkward...
The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and Sniper Elite V2 have been added to NewEgg.com. Sniper is listed as being $49.99 while the others are $59.99. No new coupons from NewEgg yet though. However you can preorder the games if you wish.

If the Mii is tied to a user account, you go to the user settings. Otherwise you can use Mii Maker.

Are the game updates working at least? or nothing so far?
Any prices in the eshop or is that not up either? I'm concerned that games will be really expensive, negating the benefits of the digital discount.

Another cool thing about the Browser that I didn't know how to use until I read the manual. Holding ZR and ZL together will let you go into "tilt scroll" mode, which is a zoomed out mode where you can use the gyro to scroll up or down. This is an easy way to quickly scroll to the top or bottom of the page, and you get a location mark on the right-hand side that shows how far down you are in the page.

The Wii U has now become my go-to for Amazon Instant, Hulu and Netflix. Prior to this, it was my Roku, but the UI for Netflix is reallyyyyyy nice.
