Genres or games you just can't get into?

Modern day first person shooters.

And by that, I mean console first person shooters. I didn't like Halo, the Modern Warfare/Black Ops series, hated Resistance 3 when I tried it for the PS3, thought Battlefield 3's single player was boring as fuck.

I did however love the original Crysis, STALKER and Metro 2033.

fighting games just aren't rewarding for me (Bushido Blade and Smash Bros being exceptions)

most JRPGs - too much of a time sink + repetitive battles

point and click adventure - I get stuck on too many puzzles, and even when I have the right idea I'll somehow do it wrong

not big on sports or racing games either, though their are plenty of exceptions.

There's relatively little that's changed between SF II and IV in terms of gameplay. There are indeed more characters and supers/ultras/EX specials (more powerful special moves that can only be performed at the cost of some of the aforementioned bars), as well as the SFIV-exclusive focus mechanic (press MP+MK to absorb an attack, release to perform an attack). Oh, and throws are now performed by LP+LK. Even with zero knowledge of/practice with any of the new elements (except the new throw command), a competent SFII Guile or Ryu player can pick up SFIV and instantly be within the top 10-20% of XBox Live/PSN/GFWL players.

Ah, thanks, I've often wondered about that!

:brofist. These are probably my 3 favourite FPS's this gen.

There are lot of games I don't play - JRPG's, fighters, MOBA games, MMO's, etc, but I can respect those who like them and I can see how they can be appealing.

But I cannot understand why people choose to play shooters like Call of Duty. I liked Crysis 1, I like Far Cry 3, I like Team Fortress 2, I think Planetside 2 is impressive, etc. So I do like some FPS games in both singleplayer and multiplayer. But I seriously cannot understand why people like the Call of Duty games.

And it's not that they sell that much. I don't really care if something sells more then something I like, as long as the games I like sell enough.

In singleplayer it mixes the all the things I like the least in games - linearity, modern war setting, uninspired graphics and it's focus is on scripted events.

In multiplayer it focuses on boring settings, a color scheme and details that means I barely see what's what in the graphics, unlocks and too much insta-kill deaths to be enjoyable.

Everything here is of course just my opinions about these games, and I'm only writing it as answer to OP. People are of course free to enjoy these games :). But if someone asks me about games that I cannot enjoy and cannot really understand how other people can enjoy, then CoD and similiar FPS games are my answer.

Definitely sports games. Haven't tried one in a while, but I could never really get into them, especially since I rarely see significant differences in them each year.

so many people dislike strategy games, it makes me sad :(

as for me, games that focus on "experience" like Uncharted or Call of Duty SP bore me really quickly, unless it's straight up a VN. Poor AI as well, i need some challenge and it bothers me when the AI is not playing as well as it could (one of the reason i play a lot of MP).

Turn-Based RPGs (except Pokemon)
Final Fantasy series

I tried some Final Fantasy games, but I just couldn't like turn-based thing, as I find it pretty boring.

Can't get into the majority of First Person Shooters, and I especially cannot get into the multiplayer aspect. After Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake 2, Counterstrike and TFC there's been barely any innovation at all and it's been practically the same recycled mechanics with just new maps and skins. Halflife was the first FPS that I actually enjoyed, but it's because it actually tried to have a narrative. This generation has also been the generation of the First Person everything.

-MMOs - always seemed to be glorified chatrooms with ridiculous levels of grinding. Hate all the "collect 10 wolf pelts" quests too (and hate how these quests have creeped into offline RPGs). Haven't played any outside of PSO though I might give DQX a try if it ever comes here.

-RTS - could never get into these. I don't like how combat works or the pacing of a game. Have never been a fan of "click on guy, click to place" to move (don't like Diablo for this reason either).

-MOBAs - I didn't even know of this genre until a few months ago, took a look at a few videos and I have no clue wtf is going on. Plus I don't like RTS games and these seem to be RTS with even more confusing shit about them.

-Sports/Racing Sims - I miss the old, arcadey, goofy sports/racing games. Now they just seem so lifeless.

-I only really can get into western RPGs when they take place in an unusual setting or have an unusual style about them (Planescape, Anachronox, Deus Ex). Nothing turns me off faster than Lord of the Rings/Star Wars ripoffs and orcs and shit.

RTS, because I can't cut it, and trying to practice enough to be able to cut it feels like trying to memorize a 500 page book I'm not interested in in order to be able to recite it and get into a club I'm not sure I want to visit.

Also, I've never been able to get into sports games, except for wacky stuff like NBA Jam or Blitz. Oh, except for golf games. Maybe because golf games are the only thing I imagine to be more fun than playing the actual game they're based on.

-Japanese anime type games; fucking despise them
-Demon's/Dark Souls
-Puzzle games
-Music games
-RPG MMOs (WoW, Guild Wars, etc)
-Civilization games
-FF games

I would actually appreciate good games in that area though if people can suggest any. I have XCom on PS3 already but I got bored of that really quickly too.
Jagged Alliance 2 is a masterpiece in the turn based tactical genre.
But there's no guarantee you would like it, as you could even be beyond redemption.

Anyway, it's baffling to read so many comments on this thread on the tone of "I don't like this genre, because I will never bother actually trying it".

* MOBA - It just doesn't do anything for me. Bores me sooo easily.
* Layton - It's fine for 5 minute breaks but it doesn't hold my att... Hey that reminds me of a puzzle.

Hopeless at:

Sports Games - Football, Ice Hockey, American Football type games.
I have no idea which player i am meant to control, i can't fathom where my team are positionally or who to pass the ball to. My spatial awareness and reasoning are demolished by these games, it's quite sad to see.
I'm usually found running the wrong way down the pitch while looking at a completely different player to the one i'm actually controlling.

Can't get into:
Online games. I get bored playing against others really quickly. Always have especially with FPS games. I like them and play them from time to time but where i'll play a narrative led game for hours i can only be bothered with 30 minutes online with others before i wander off and do something else.

MMO games - The same. I play for a while, say an hour, and then before i know it i've quit the game and loaded up an SP game.

Pokemon.... Seriously, after gaming for 30 years, I dont get how this elicits such an immense fanbase... its so... boring...

Edit: Also Music/Rhythm games. My lack of rhythm in real life translates to a horrible experience in these. And I game to escape the harshness of the world, not to be reminded of it.

Brief history of my JRPG experience.

When I was 12 (17 years ago), I tried Chrono Trigger. Since I was borrowing a SNES from a friend, I just wasn't used to the console experience. Gave up after maybe an hour.

When I was 16, borrowed a copy of FFVII on PC from a friend. Tried a bit, but found the game to be very dull.

Between then and about a year ago, I tried a number of titles ranging from Pokemon, to more Final Fantasy, to Dragon Quest. All of them too monotonous, controlling, and way too confined.

Then about a year ago, I played Valkyria Chronicles. I put probably 20 hours into the game, which is pretty standard before I stop most single player games. The actual gameplay was fun.

Now, I have nearly 60 hours into my P4G game. To give you an idea, the only single player games I've put over 25 hours into in the last 5 years is: Civ V, Mount and Blade, Civ IV, Europa Universalis III, Hearts of Iron, and Star Traders (on Android).

I still don't like most JRPGs. The only genre that I absolutely can not get into is Action/Adventure, like GoW, Uncharted, and the like.
MOBAs. I just don't get it.
Let me try my best at explaining (though I'm not trying to convince you to like them).

MOBA core gameplay is really bad. The interface, interacting with the game engine, is total trash. One would not go into a game of Dota where it was 8v8 with random players dropping in and out during a map just to play the game and have fun, as they would with competitive shooters. The allure is the fact that you are playing a tightly controlled and regulated match against players of a similar skill level. Every single game is a scrim/match that gets your pulse running like only competition can. It's not about the game, it's about the competition.

Oh and highly linear/scripted "cinematic" action games like Uncharted, Call of Duty and the like. They bore me to death.

Ah. Well, that makes sense. My friends who play MOBAs play them obsessively (almost exclusively), and they are also people who played WoW obsessively.

Me, I don't want to waste my life playing just one game like that. I'd rather waste it playing lots of different games.

- First-person shooters

- Minecraft

- Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim, Dark Souls, The Witcher, or any game with dungeons and dragons.

- For some reason I can't get into Vanquish. Love the rest of Platinum's games though.

I don't like moba games. I've tried to force myself and have liked other genre I've forced myself to play before but something about the structure of racing other people to kill creeps is boring to me. Also how the combat is all like a distilled mmo where people roam then try to gang up on one target. I'd much rather play an RTS game.

SRPGs - Just don't enjoy where your only interaction is grid based movements or cutscenes(or whatever you call dialogue exchanges like in Fire Emblem). Completely eradicates immersion for me. If a good one came along though, I'd be willing to try it. I might try the new Fire Emblem.

Character Action games(a la DMC, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden) - I just don't enjoy them. I appreciate mechanics, but I'm always someone who prefers to take my time, and they're the opposite of that. And I never find them that rewarding outside of seeing some cool animations. I would rather play an RPG with mediocre combat, or even something like Dynasty Warriors that offers more variety of unlockables to strive towards. I'd preferred the 'dumbed down' versions of that combat like with Bully or Sleeping Dogs or Batman.

Shooters - Kind of the same thing as Character Action. It just fails to engage me. I don't mind shooting as an element of the gameplay, but when that's all there really is? It's not enough for me. Especially because most developers make some of the most boring guns ever conceived.

Racing games- Just frustrating when you're about to win, and something ruins it for you. I feel like it's the only genre that does that. I see they're moving forward with stuff like Forza's rewind, but I feel like I'm cheating. I did like Driver: SF but calling that a racer is a bit dishonest.

Puzzlers - No interest. I finished Portal 2, and it was great moments at the start but as it went on, I felt less and less excited when I solved one. Match 3's and whatnot are definitely a no no for me as well.

Adventure games - Same thing as puzzlers. I just need more interaction, I guess. The closest I'm willing to go to Adventure games is stuff like Shenmue

I'm picky about my 2d platformers, but I can definitely get into them.

RPGs, usually. I'll have fun for a while, but then I'll get bored and stop playing. KOTOR might be the only one I've actually beaten.

RTS. That level of management just isn't for me. This does not extend into all simulation games though when you have to manage something (e.g. The Sims, which I love).

Also, action games in the beat-em-up style. Back in the 8-bit and 16-bit days when I was younger, I enjoyed those games. But these days they don't keep my attention. I'm talking about any game where you play as a character taking on slews of enemies and stringing combos together (or mashing buttons if you're not skilled). But this even extends to action games in general. I don't enjoy the likes of Bayonetta, DmC, God of War, Castlevania: LOS, Dante's Inferno, etc.

I can't even say that shooters keep my attention anymore. I can still play the Resident Evil games because they're part of one of my favorite franchises and carry along elements of horror (mostly RE4 and some of Revelations). But most FPS games and TPS games with cover shooting don't hold my attention. The last FPS I gave a shit about in single player was Half-Life 2 (for multiplayer, Halo 3). The last cover shooter I cared to play was Gears of War, and that's because of co-op. I have no desire to play any more games like that.

I'm currently playing Mass Effect which I enjoy enough, but that's because it's an RPG and I still enjoy the occasional RPG. Besides, my style is always to talk my way through sequences, rather than pull out a gun. I only fight when I have to.

Writing this reminds me that I'm extremely picky about games nowadays.

Genres:

Fighting (used to be into it when I was a kid though)
Action Hack n Slash (ditto)
Strategy (XCOM is the only exception here)
Racing (Forza Horizon is the exception)

Specific games:
Borderlands - played the first few opening hours, it just felt like I was doing fetch quests
Dark Souls - too hard, ok? I don't have the time for a game like this!
Minecraft - I want a game, not a toolbox
Saints Row - I want a game, not a playpen
The Witcher 2 - I don't know tbh, it just never clicked (and god damn it I really wanted to like this one ;_; )

I do enjoy my SRPGs (Langrisser <3), but I find I prefer the SRPGs with the traditional RPG "walk around" map/dungeon movement (but encounters are still in the grid-based format), as opposed to menu-driven towns and nothing but battles. Check out Arc the Lad 2, Treasure Hunter G, and the Shining Force series.

Yeah this is one of my least favorite of the classic 2D genres... though I will still play beat em ups. They definitely have their place - if you want something you don't want to think too hard about, or play co-op, pump a few credits into them and mash mash mash. I definitely enjoyed the genre more when I was younger, in the arcade (Turtles, Final Fight). Nowadays I only really like the Streets of Rage games and that's because of the music.

Jagged Alliance 2 is a masterpiece in the turn based tactical genre.

Anyway, it's baffling to read so many comments on this thread on the tone of "I don't like this genre, because I will never bother actually trying it".

Well it depends. I've got limited experience in MMOs but I've watched people in college play games like Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot, watched my brother play god knows how much FFXI, seen a ton of WOW... nothing about it looked like something worth the time sink. But like I said, I'm still open to playing DQX, though admittedly only for the DQ trappings not the actual MMO gameplay.

Thanks for clarifying that, I just got gifted DOTA 2 today on steam...I can't decide if I like it or not yet. Might have to put a few more hours into it.

Be sure to do some reading if you haven't already. It's a very competitive game, and it can be very frustrating to learn because in nearly every public game you're playing either against or alongside someone far above your skill level. This was true for me, at least (I'm not very good).

It's a very high risk/high reward endeavor. If you can tolerate the steep, steep learning curve, a good game, win or loss, can be very rewarding. I don't generally appreciate aggressive competition, but the teamwork in DotA can be very fulfilling.

and you probably already know this, but GAF's thread is a great resource.

Fire Emblem.

I love most turn-based strategy games. Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, you name it. But Fire Emblem games in particular just never seem to get me. I made it though the first one on GBA on, like, my third attempt. But I don't think I got even halfway through Sacred Stones or Path of Radiance (I think that was the console one I tried).

But every couple years I decide I need to try again. Maybe this time I'll get into it. Convince myself that the Skills system they just added is just what I need, or that if I just don't focus so much on keeping everyone alive I'll have a better time, or whatever. Usually it doesn't stick.

That said, I intend to try again with Awakening. A customizable main character sounds great (character customization is one of the things I tend to find lacking in FE), and I'll try it with permadeath turned off (which just causes more frustration than actual difficulty IMHO). So we'll see how that turns out. Perhaps this time I'll enjoy it...

Or perhaps I'm destined to forever beat my head against this wall...

I've never got into complex, adult themed, boring, one-color PC oriented games. Stuff like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, all of the MMO's, Starcraft, Diablo.

Although I'm more of a console gamer, I've never been PC gaming, I've played many PC games which were the actual fun ones, tycoon games, point 'n clicks, puzzle games and historical strategy titles. Only thing I require from games is fun and high complexity always takes fun away.

Also I couldn't get into Gears of War. too much testesorone for me.

RTS : I'm bad at management and multitasking, but I like watching it.

Realistic Racing games : Running around a circle 30 times is hardly fun for me.

Realistic Sports Game : If I want to play Baseball, I will go play baseball... outside.

Turn based RPGS. I can't stand the slow pace, getting interrupted randomly to fight things, and AHH IT'S SO BORING! Pokemon is an exception somehow. I love Pokemon.

Most first person shooters. There's too many.

SPORTS GAMES FUCK SPORTS GAMES.

ANIME GAMES FUCK ANIME GAMES

Touchscreen and motion control.

If I have to use either to play your game then I don't want to play your game.
