Brief history of my JRPG experience.
When I was 12 (17 years ago), I tried Chrono Trigger. Since I was borrowing a SNES from a friend, I just wasn't used to the console experience. Gave up after maybe an hour.
When I was 16, borrowed a copy of FFVII on PC from a friend. Tried a bit, but found the game to be very dull.
Between then and about a year ago, I tried a number of titles ranging from Pokemon, to more Final Fantasy, to Dragon Quest. All of them too monotonous, controlling, and way too confined.
Then about a year ago, I played Valkyria Chronicles. I put probably 20 hours into the game, which is pretty standard before I stop most single player games. The actual gameplay was fun.
Now, I have nearly 60 hours into my P4G game. To give you an idea, the only single player games I've put over 25 hours into in the last 5 years is: Civ V, Mount and Blade, Civ IV, Europa Universalis III, Hearts of Iron, and Star Traders (on Android).
I still don't like most JRPGs. The only genre that I absolutely can not get into is Action/Adventure, like GoW, Uncharted, and the like.
MOBAs. I just don't get it.
Let me try my best at explaining (though I'm not trying to convince you to like them).
MOBA core gameplay is really bad. The interface, interacting with the game engine, is total trash. One would not go into a game of Dota where it was 8v8 with random players dropping in and out during a map just to play the game and have fun, as they would with competitive shooters. The allure is the fact that you are playing a tightly controlled and regulated match against players of a similar skill level. Every single game is a scrim/match that gets your pulse running like only competition can. It's not about the game, it's about the competition.
