Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Whatever happened to all those GAFfers that described in detail that more than 2 GB Ram in either next gen console was impossible because of density?

Nobody is talking about 8 GB of GDDR. Too costly, too complexe and, above all, totally overkill for the CPU-GPU combination rumored to be fueling the machine.
In my wildest dreams, I'd have hoped for another 1 GB of RAM to take care of OS and other multimedia tasks, but even that would not be feasible...

If it is as powerful as I expect it to be, then I will happily put down $650 for the PS4.

Yep, good plan to accelerate Sony's bankruptcy. Use your effing logic, guys.

Did I miss an announcement that said Microsoft was doing a worldwide launch for Durango?
Why is everyone in here so sure it will launch in Europe this year?

I suppose this means the console would be released early next year in AUNZ as well (since we generally get similar launch dates to Europe), which actually sounds quite good for me. If all goes according to plan I would have been working for a few months by then and should have a bit of money to afford it - as long as it's not too expensive -.

hopefully its not $999. that was shit was cray.

Just to add fuel to the fire, PSM3 Magazine's rumor back from Nov last year;

5th The memory should be at 4GB to 8GB

The PS4 will probably have 4GB of memory, but in the end could have 8GB: If the Microsoft Xbox 360 successor have 8GB memory, then Sony would be put under pressure and should follow suit.

It will still most likely be 4GB :P

I can't really bring myself to be excited. On previous generations, I used to get real excited over the prospect of new consoles coming and what new experiences I would see. But now? Not really. I just don't care. I don't care whether one is more powerful than another. That doesn't even sell me. Will the games be good? All I care for. If they are bland, uninteresting, and end up being the same stuff we've been getting, only dressed up prettier, I doubt I would be enticed to play it.

Why are you here?

And in regards to the social aspect of the consoles, Ubisoft's CEO;

What are you expecting from the next generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles?

I think what happens this time will be like what happened in the past. Generally, next generation consoles pick up what's interesting in the world around them – they look at what the PC experiences are, what the mobile experiences are, they look at the social elements … and then manufacturers come up with a unit that you can put in front put the TV but that takes advantage of all the innovations that have happened since the last generation, and at a price that is accessible. So for sure, the machines will be more powerful, but we can expect this generation – because they took quite a long time! – to actually come with something really new, really interesting that will boost the market enormously.

Still little while to go, and they could add more same memory, then it won't break the processing games. But I think they stick with 4GB unless more pressure from devs.

8 GB GDDR? Bwahahaha! Forums at it again : Constructing wild figures only to express disappointement and sorrow!
4 GB of that RAM would be a blessing.
Either the article is bogus; or Sony's been intent on using solwer RAM from the get-go; or it is to be understood that the rumor concerns the end results, not the capacity.
Otherwise, still not sold on the notion that Orbis is the more powerful of the two. I made a 100$ bet that Durango would come up on top...The way the author phrases his piece suggests that he doesn't know much about Durango (GPU from unknown source...lol!).

Can I please get in on that bet? The PS4 is going to be the most powerful console hands down this gen. Xbox am cry :(.....

there is also this

PS4′s APU was described today as a “derivative” of existing A10 hardware. The hardware is “based on A10 system and base platform”.

The “ultimate goal” for the hardware, we were told, is for it to be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D with “no problem,” to create a machine that’s powerful enough for “today and tomorrow’s market”.

The dev kits have “either 8Gb or 16Gb of RAM.
Deduce from that what you will.”

Maybe only 1st party devs got the dev kits with 16GB of ram .

Unless the unit is significantly larger, hotter, and more expensive you can forget it. 8 GB of GDDR5 is pie in the sky.

Adding more GDDR5 RAM would have no major impact on size or heat. And I doubt it would be that much more expensive.

Please drop this 8GB DDR5 talk. It'll only end in shattered predictions. I'd KILL for that amount in PS4 but definitely not happening.

Just imagine if this was to happen.

Devs would probably go crazy trying to think of stuff to do with 5.8GB per frame in a 30FPS game.

no seriously what would devs do with that much Data & bandwidth at their fingertip?

GPU would probably fall over & die trying to process all that.

16 GB of GDDR5 ram! We all know Sony ninja's are reading this thread so let's keep the hype ramping!

The iPhone 5 had 16 days between its announcement and its release in the USA, Canada, all of Europe, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, with no more than a week separating some countries.

The iPad 4 had 10 days between its announcement and its release in all of North America, all of Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. All on the same day.

According to this article, the PS4 will have 270 days between its announcement and release in North America and Japan, and 390 days in Europe.

Unacceptable.

There is enormous difference between a console release, and that of a phone, TV, or any other piece of consumer electronics.

The iPhone5 is just an annual hardware refresh of an existing platform. Same with the iPad, same with the MacBook etc. The PS4, Xbox 720 etc are brand new platforms. Platforms they need to sell to both consumers and publishers.

Publishers / devs will be working on next gen games, but won't be able to announce them due to NDA until Sony and MS have formally announced the new consoles. The publishers themselves will want to announce as soon as possible, to drum up publicity and get feedback for their new games. This is the same reason you get teaser and trailers for movies a year or two before it hits the screens. You don't launch major entrainment events with a few days notice. You build hype over months or even years. Shareholders of publishers and game makers will want to know what they are working on.

It does neither the console makers, or the publishers, any good, to keep the release of the new consoles a secret until days before it hits the stores. Sony and MS have a symbiotic relationship with game makers, and it is in the interest of all parties to announce way before release.

Wow, if the 8 GB rumor is true, then Sony is making damn sure they aren't being outclassed on anything hardware related.

If they go that high, I doubt it's all GDDR5. But that doesn't preclude them from including a split memory architecture with 4 GB GDDR5 and 4 GB of DDR3

Well I guess the only question at this point is whether we will be getting a PS4 or Xbox 720 with our Wii U to complete this generation. We probably are not doing 3 systems again this gen.....

God of War(for hubby), Uncharted(for moi), rpgs(for moi), and most multiplatform games(for us) is making me lean toward PS4 more than Xbox 720 at this point.

No way 8 gigs is happening, and the sad part will be that when they announce 4 gigs of fast ram, people will freak out that its not 8, when in fact before this rumor.. most were very happy about the 4.

I'm happy with 4 GB of GDDR5 myself, but Edge isn't a publication that posts bogus speculation.

The only people freaking out would be the console warz guise.

It will come at the expense of increase in power consumed, which in turn ..

yes it would, but who is to say that Sony hasn't already worked it out though.

How familiar are you guys with how GDDR5 or memory in general works? Memory does not require the same levels of cooling as a GPU or CPU and draws very little power. At most it would require a little more space on the motherboard (probably not enough to impact case design) and a little more wattage to power it. The system will probably draw less power than what the PS3 drew at launch as is. And as someone already demonstrated, the cost of GDDR5 is pretty low, and that was a year ago.

I'm not going to get my hopes up, but 8 GBs of GDDR5 is not a "pipe dream" as many have said. It's entirely possible.

Not to dismiss any source or any posters, but I highly, highly doubt Nextbox or PS4 will release this year....Late next year maybe for PS4. March 2015 looks ideal to me from Sony's standpoint. It just doesn't have enough breathing room between now and the year end. I'm sure 1st party studios are working with a sdk, but there's just not enough time between unveiling games now and releasing them 9 months from now. All we have in terms of media is Agni's philosphy and a few tech demos. Not a single screenshot released. If it's announced that it will be released this year, then it will an extremely brash decision on Sony's part, as much as I want my grubby mitts on a PS4 controller. I think part of this is coming from me following the launch of previous 4 generation of consoles. This will be really unprecedented.

2015 wat.?

Its only February 2013.

Think about what you said.

Cool how long between the announcement of Avengers and its release date? While we are comparing PS4 to unrelated products

Hear that Sony, you know what to do now. Don't let us down.
I'd lose my shit so bad if that actually happened. Possible? Yes, but
highly improbable
.

Games have been in development for a long time on next gen hardware. It's not like they're pulling a Saturn, it'll still be at least 8 months before the system is out. I think they've just learned that announcing a system a year and a half in advance is pointless.
