Microsoft Conference: Will they Bring It Like Sony Did?

You have no idea what the Chief is capable of.

What if I'm tired of FPS? Do I have to watch myself about that too?
You love Halo, sure we get it and that's your opinion, but what if some of us don't care about that game/genre?

I don't know what Google Now is, but if you're asking whether anyone would use a natural voice interface, the answer is definitely yes, I'm sure most people would if it worked reasonably well (and according to the rumors, they are developing a natural language parser for Durango). Those are precisely the kinds of almost magical experiences that could sell the new Xbox to many people. Personally, that's what I wanted ever since I first watched Star Trek as a kid. Imagine just telling it "Xbox, wake me up every day at 5 AM with Napalm Death's You Suffer on repeat". Priceless!
But none of that is exactly new, both from Siri starting the trend to Google sort of perfecting the recognition and speed. That's not a system seller, or something that makes me as a gamer interested.

And again, really don't see the majority of people talking to their TV as the means to their PRIMARY navigational input.

It's rather new at your home, and you could potentially use it for great many things, but regardless, that would be just one of the features.

And yes, I definitely see the majority of people preferring talking to their TV as their primary navigational input. Why not? Is it simpler and more intuitive to remember where each of the many channels is stored and then manually type in the numbers or just say "Xbox, change to [name of the channel]"?

as far as I can tell 720 is akin to what I saw in a episode of Black Mirror (15 Million Merits) and I can't fathom how in glorious entertainment Hell they can make a show about hardcore games and Kinect 2 entertainment that meshes well.

Hopefully 1st reveal will be about the games, the infrastructure, the controller, the box.
E3 will be about the playable games and some exclusives.
Kinect 2 best advertising is that it should work, it should actually serve the purpose of navigating with ease and have smart voice controls etc...

If MS is willing to massively market a Kinect 2 game, I'll say FUCK.
they better have F2P Halo next-Gen MP on day 1 rather than sell me on Kinect 2 gaming.

There will be Dance Central 4 or spirtual successor, and it's all I care about.

If they really do bring out Phil Harrison, it'll be like a dagger in the heart of PS. :lol Not due to fanboyism or anything, but because it just ruins his seemingly dedicated-PS gamer persona. I even met the guy in PS Home once (private beta) long ago, along with of course watching his talks/keynotes etc.

His interviews now on Atari and whatnot just go to show he's a slick talker who can probably sell anything, and not really a "loyalist" type like some PS big-shots probably are.
I don't think they'll bring him out, he was essentially fired, it would be pretty strange to have your frontman someone who was deemed not sufficient by your competition. Not impossible of course, but I think it's unlikely. He is a good public speaker though.

The Kinect hardware itself sold well but didn't the software (perhaps apart from the Dance Central series apart) sell from average to very poor?

I don't think MS will go after the Core Gamers like Sony did, because their system is not the as powerful. I think they are going to try to attacker a much more broader audience.

I hope the Fable series is dead. Fable 3 was a watching paint dry simulator, and the kinnect game was embarrassing both for the player and developer. Mercy kill this terrible thing.

I have a feeling that steam box and next Xbox are the same thing.

With all the kind words Gabe Newell had for Microsoft, I really doubt it.
But then, it wouldn't be the first time he changes his allegiance. :P
I still think it's impossible.

Fable IV is coming whether you want it or not. Fable III sold really well, and I doubt that The Journey had any real impact on Microsoft's plans for the series.

Personally, I'd like them to continue the franchise. I thought that Fable III was a flawed, but fun game. They should focus on their new IP first though.

I don't think that MS will kill Fable since it's still selling pretty good but Lionhead is supposedly working on a new IP, that being said I fully agree that Fable needs a major overhaul/reboot.

Back on topic Sony's show was decent overall...hardware, OS, features sound great but the games they showed were underwhelming, especially considering the hype and their attitude pre-show ("Oh, Yay Another Mario Game." and then they showed a Killzone spin-off, seriously?).

In other words I think it will be easy to top Sony's event games wise, the question is are they interested in such a thing? it's really hard to predict MS at this point.

It'll be exactly the same as Sonys. There will be games, hardware talk, casual devices shown, and two exclusives shown off.

Edit. Both companies will be waiting for E3 to truly wow everyone.

it'll be competitive.

While MS might want to push kinect and services, they know they need good core games in the first few years to get the momentum going, and will support that with strong investment.

they ramped down first party investment in recent years because third parties were keeping up the necessary hardware sales and internal investment wasn't needed at that level. Next gen will reset that and they will invest strongly again until they don't need to.

where they put services will be interesting. Where sony was all about gamers sharing moments, thats perhaps where MS will emphasise media and connectivity - in the ethos of the machine

but everything will be underlined with great games that look fantastic.

The Kinect hardware itself sold well but didn't the software (perhaps apart from the Dance Central series apart) sell from average to very poor?

Some sold well, some not so well. The Kinect Sports series is well over 6 million, and Kinect Star Wars is at 1.26 million. I don't know if we have reliable figures for any other title.

Of course, Kinect Adventures is at 24 million, but it was a pack-in. Still, apart from Hexic, that's the single game that ended up in most Xbox 360 owners' hands. Let that sink in.

Was Fable the Journey so bad by the way ? I only tried the demo, and liked it...

Some people really liked it, others didn't. As with most Kinect games, your enjoyment will vary depending on whether the camera can work correctly in your home environment, and whether it's been properly calibrated.

I really hope that rumor about their console running the Windows 8 kernel proves to be false, unless it has more than 8GBs of RAM to make up for it.

They can talk about Kinect, but it needs to be super brief. Like, at most 15 minutes. They need to announce that Xbox Live Gold is no longer required for online play and that services such as Netflix and Hulu are no longer hidden behind a paywall. And lastly, they need to bring in the games.

If they can pull all of the above, then they will be on par with the Sony conference. If they want to surpass it, they need to fucking surprise me.

For all we know right now, the whole "Sony is for gamers, MS probably won't be" is a bit ridiculous. First because half of the games shown at the reveal were multiplatform, and second because those that weren't were all traditional genres that will appear everywhere (it's not like we don't expect MS to have their own first party FPS, racer or fantasy action game...).

The PS4 may have been designed for games first, but the whole opposition "gamer console/non-gamer console" is just a marketing ploy that Sony is trying to push forward. The most realistic scenario is that it will be 360/PS3 again, with 90% of common games and features.

I expect both to be fairly simliar, but with tweaks to emphasise certain aspects

so MS will deliver a media/services emphasis, but that plays great games, and Sony will deliver a gaming/social sharing emphasis that also supports all your media and services.

Same shit, different spin.

Hit the nail on the head.

I haven't been a 360 owner since my original system red-ringed back in '06, but I'm willing to consider the successor if Microsoft prices the new system competitively.

As to Kinect 2.0, maybe they'll show Sega's Crimson Dragon. I love anything even tangentially related to Panzer Dragoon!

Let's see.

What to expect from a company with the most closed digital network, which most of it's recent focus is a camera based entertainment and which has severely few IP's that they focus on?

Oh I'm expecting Skittles to fall from the sky.

As opposed to the massive amount of IPs that sony displayed?

I love how negative everyone is before anything has even been displayed.

The Sony conference looked great - Killzone looked amazing and i cant wait to see more.

Im sure the Microsoft stuff will look cool too - i hope they show Kinect's use for Illumiroom as that was really impressive.

I expect a bare bones affair. A glimpse into their media/services/social network. A few demos, vertical slices, loads of hype, countless promises.

Sony didn't do all that much, therefore I don't expect Microsoft to do all that much either and save their big guns for E3.

If people genuinely consider that Sony 'Brought it' then all Microsoft have to do is come out with a load of hyperbole too and little gaming content and that'll seemingly please the easily impressed.

Apart from the new features I thought Sony's conference was very turgid and very light on games I'd bother playing let alone buying a new console for.

I expect MS and Sony's systems to be very similar at their core, with different online bells and whistles to differentiate them.

Both companies have too much to lose by making ports difficult. They are competing, of course. But they also need each other -- nobody wants to be the odd man out missing ports.

Just look at Nintendo.

I'm fairly pessimistic about what they'll show. I was strongly aligned to the 360 this gen, but I feel like Sony is the company that's speaking to me now, Microsoft have a hill to climb.

Just look at Nintendo.

Yes, absolutely. I don't think that's a Nintendo specific thing either (that is, I don't think third parties are "picking on" Nintendo).

It is unfortunate, but if we have four major platforms on the market -- let's call them A, B, C, and D -- and A/B/C are all very similar while D is different enough that porting is difficult or expensive, then most of the time A/B/C will get the games while D is left out. Even if D sells very well.

I say this is unfortunate because it creates very strong pressure to be conformist as a hardware manufacturer. Move too far out of the "standard" and you're facing alienation by the major publishers.

If they announce the machine specs at 9gb gddr5 it's an automatic win.

Sega has nothing to do with Crimson Dragon. It's being published by Microsoft.

I agree with what you're saying though. I'd love an upgraded version of the game for the Durango.

I enjoyed the 360 and ps3 a lot this gen. I'm very curious about microsoft's new first part approach where they actuall have several first party studios. The ps4 conference was a little disappointing for me because of the lack of new first party content outside of sequels to franchises I don't like. Knack looked interesting and clever. Killzone looked good graphically but the game looked like garbage. Second son might be good but I never liked infamous that much. Aside from naughty dog games I don't think there is a whole lot to be excited about. If they had announced last of us ps4 version or last guardian I would have been very happy. I wouldn't call more if the same sequels and some new 3rd party stuff that will no doubt be on xbox bringing it. Ms might do the same thing with cod madden or FIFA though so who knows?

The fuck you talking about? MS won't have the technical edge, from what I hear, but they are supposed to wipe the floor with Sony in the presentation. Folks here in Redmond are NOT impressed with Sony's conference.

You lost credibility remember? Why should we believe you?

Based off the leaks and rumors; the new Xbox has some nice high level thinking behind it.

Full-on star-trek style voice control is coming. (advanced Siri)
Kinect will actually work like it was supposed to, and games will be made for it.
HDMI INPUT, so you can just go ahead and picture-in-picture your other console.

If they want me to buy their system then they will have to do better than that. I don't care for Siri on my phone let alone a console.

I don't care for Kinect either. I want OS features that make the whole console experience more convenient. Sony seems to be doing that.

But at the end of the day it's about the games. The reason I bought a 360 was for the exclusives like Mass Effect (at the time). Microsoft has the cash to moneyhat/fund exclusives again so I expect them to do that again, however I don't think it'll be on the level of BF4 or CoD.

You lost credibility remember? Why should we believe you?

I have no idea :lol
