DigitalFoundry: Hands-on with PS4 1080p 30fps...!!

untitledp3p4x.png

I think TTT2 at 1080p60 would ended up being the prettier game overall if I'm honest.

I'm expecting close to "PS3 announcement Tekken bullshots" for this gen's big name fighters. Killer Instinct is a downloadable title for the fans, it's not a looker.

Killzone is a step forward with its 25-30 FPS performance while Forza at 1080p60 is a step back? If anything, Forza not having day/night is shooters not having 60 FPS.

Where is the logic?

Killone will be 30fps locked at launch. I am pretty sure of that. If it's 25-30fps in pre-alpha, and the game is complete with just 3 months of polish left to do, they'll easily have time to optimise it. Killzone has moved forward in the sense that it now offers more open ended gameplay and levels. What I meant with Forza is that all Sim racers are 60fps, as are all fighters. Where Forza has taken a step back compared to the competition is in some key graphical areas, namely baked lighting, and less content.

It's really one option I wish my TV had, I have a feeling I'd end up liking it much like you. It's also one option Samsung apparently does better than anyone else (or at least they did 2-3 years ago when I last asked about this). However, I've heard many reports at the time about this kind of thing not working well at all for games that don't hold rock solid 30FPS, so I'm curious what's your experience with that.

Using motionflow (I'm gonna call it motionflow I know different TV's have different names for it) if a game dips below 30fps and goes to 20fps it definitely doesn't seem to work as well as it should. Which is why its better with a game thats locked at 30fps or above - such as most Unreal engine based games. Basically the game gets too choppy below 30fps and the TV has a hard time compensating for those missed frames. Good examples where it doesn't work great are the console versions of Risen, Two Worlds, some sections in Far Cry 3. Basically where a game is running at 20-25fps a lot of the time.

I dunno which TV's do it best but I had a Sony one before this and it was great on that too. This Samsung one I have now (d7000) has more options for motionflow that you can tweak but I leave it on medium/smooth - there are higher settings for it as its a 200hz TV (UK). Anymore than about 100hz-120hz motionflow on videogames then you get too much weird shimmeryness around your character or at the edges of the screen when things move.

But honestly the effect it produces for the majority of videogames when you start moving around is pretty amazing. No input lag...I dunno maybe I can't notice it but I can easily tell framerates apart and I definitely would be able to notice lag if it was impacting my play experience. I've switched motionflow and all those effects off several times and gone to pure Game Mode on the TV, just to make sure and the lag still isn't better or improved for me.

Coz most of the time games hardly change from 'pre-alpha','beta' to the final code.

Well, wouldn't it be likely that they will still polish it some more before release?

I don't get it. I'm still purchasing a PS4 but are we even seeing a benefit of the GDDR5?

Definitely but it would be wise to keep our expectations in check,Second Son and Killzone really show that the PS4 is the more powerful machine though.

I have a question for people and since there are some techies in here I thought I could ask in here.

If the PS4 is 110v-240v and I buy a US console and play it in Australia I can just use a standard figure 8 cable yes? But what would happen if I didn't know this at launch and plugged it into a step down converter that i currently use, would it still be ok, and not explode??

That's rich! We've gone from "no way can the x1 compete with the power of the ps4" and "the x1 has been downclocked even more to wiiu type levels". Now after seeing actual games running on actual hardware, Microsoft has devised a marketing ploy to double the framerate of their games to cover up for its weak hardware. :lol

Damn, some of you guys are touchy. I'm not seeing how what I suggested was insulting to MS. There's no doubt that MS and Sony both are looking for ways to make their product look better.

People should really stop believing that. It'll be 30fps.

It'll also be the better looking game.

Evo said publicly that they're aiming for 60.

they can miss it, yes, but it'll be doubly embarrassing for them to have missed their target. i don't think they'd say that unless they were close.

if they hadn't said a word, I'd believe it'll be 30. But now I think they're closer to 60 than we might suspect having seen only E3 footage.

Glad the Killzone's body weight still there, I love this movement. I hate ice rink movement.

same here, Killzone gunplay is amazing, if they need to add input lag to achieve that then so be it, haters can still play Call of Duty or whatever, I admit Killzone 3 was toned-down a lot so I hope SF plays more like Killzone 2, the best console shooter ever (IMO, of course).

pretty sad when we are black balling one of our best technical sites because they don't agree with our assumptions of hardware engineering
One of their MODERATORS spreads lies about CBOAT saying MS is downclocking the 180, when he only said there were yield problems and tries to discredit him. His tag is BRiT.
A forum who allows moderators like that is nothing more than a fanboy site. I'd trust pastebin before I trust those idiots.

unless they were Sony fanboys then it'd be acceptable I suppose

with the Ms hate and anger directed at anyone who supports anything Ms has said or done for the past month or so means that the little scenario in your post means nothing to me

GAF's opinion of MS or anyone else changes depending on what they've done lately and what they're planning to do. Imagine that.
GAF had a very favorable opinion of the Xbox division a few years ago.

Negative MS story/thread --> Gaf thinks MS sucks, we all buy PS4

Negative Sony story/thread --> Gaf thinks Sony sucks, cancel preorders, jump on MS bandwagon

Rinse...

Repeat...

again...and again... and again...and again...every day people are flipping.

Last positive store before release wins?

The game looks graphically good but I can't get over the artstyle :( I dunno... Maybe it'll get better?
Sabrewulf actually doesn't look half bad, and neither do the backgrounds, but Jago looks like a cheesy 80s pro wrestler. Outcheesing the original is an achievement in and of itself.

Sony had a smorgasbord of games out on the floor, across several platforms and in wildly varying states of completion, but I got the impression that MS was hiding anything that didn't look polished and next gen. So I wouldn't read too much into these early builds. Sony just seems excited about having them out there to be played.

I guess if games running at 60 frames is the primary benchmark thn such news is disappointing, but if for in tesellation, lighting and particle effects, and texture mapping, then there are more grey areas in all this.

What about Lococycle or Crimson Dragon? C'mon, hiding? I don't think so.

How about for someone who supports 100% of everything MS has said and done unreservedly?

Most of the time is NOT a console launch game when devs might have to work with unfinished dev kits quite late in the production of the game. And stuff like pop-in and getting the game to run smoothly are EXACTLY the kinds of things that get polished at a late stage of development. People shitting on Drive Club seem to forget about the first Motorstorm which looked quite atrocious even by PS3's launch game standards when they first showed it but then it kept taking huge leaps forward, as far as the graphical quality goes.

Somebody explain why people are complaining about games that are clearly still in development? Where is the logic in that?

I don't understand statements like this.

With mainstream AAA reveals, I can scarcely think of any games that received substantial visual improvements on release, only downgrades.

Do you honestly think these games will somehow get fixed in months' time?

I agree, but remember PS3 was not as easy to develop than PS4.

The KI shot looks fine to me. It's not like I'm going to be that zoomed in on them anyway during gameplay. The art direction is another thing entirely.

It doesn't even look like a good capture anyway.
