I have a friend who was posting a lot of "save marriage" petitions and stuff, but I just can't delete her because I know she's really lovely at heart. She's a little naive and I really think the church has been feeding her this crap, but she just ignored me when I messaged her about it :(

On a more serious note, there are lots of studys that show that privileged people show serious distress and sense of loss when equality is reached and feel that the minority now is more privileged then those who where previously the privileged ones

Only the egoistic ones. The ones who based their self-worth on others who are less fortunate than them. As a result, when equality is finally reached they no longer feel like special snowflakes anymore.

People are selfish and love to rationalize why they deserve more than others. Projection is mixed in too, one supposes. One's own greed is reversed onto others - they're the selfish ones who want it all, not you.

It's how we end up with a Christian majority paranoid about being "oppressed" by a minority that only wants equal treatment. It's worse in the case of gays because they bring up topics like sexuality - something repressed and demonized by an already socially conservative culture that is festering with neuroses over such topics. Easier to demonize gays as evil deviants, and if we just got rid of them, we wouldn't have to trouble ourselves anymore such such nasty thoughts proper people shouldn't be thinking about.

(Except proper people are. They are evidently obsessed with such topics, which is what tends to happen when you live in fear and repression.)

That's it, I can't take it anymore. Can't tell what is satire and what's not. I don't want to believe people can be that stupid and bigoted, but I also can't shake off the feeling that some of those comments are real, and not parody. The problem is, there's a fairly large number of teenagers from isolated pools of super-homogenized conservative culture who are quite vocal on the internet. Like all teenagers, they tend to be god damned idiots. It's just that these are currently operating from the warped reality tunnel their culture is projecting.

We tend to assume anyone under 30 is probably not an extremely twisted bigot who promotes the most offensive stereotypes of minorities, but there are still a sizable chuck of kids being brought up by parents to carry on their bigotry.

I recall there was a woman on the Daily Show a few years ago who had written a book about kids growing up in modern "conservative stepford" towns in rural, upper-middle class America where the typical family was a bedrock of the modern neoconservative culture. She interviewed a lot of people, came away with the view that they were all living in an alternate reality that was very explicitly crafted for the agenda in play.

She did, however, feel that once those kids reached maturity and were forced to deal with the rest of the world, quite a few of of them would suffer a horrible psychological collapse. As it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain that kind of delusional, propaganda-based thinking as the world moves on.

If society keeps evolving, people who want to hide from that are going to end up in smaller and smaller pools. The old and bitter will remain set in their views. I would say it's going to be pretty hard to hide reality from the youth however.

Right now I think we are seeing a lot of flash and fury from conservative culture as it tries to deny what is happening and "fight back". Enough of the younger generation have adopted progressive social views that we're far past the point of no return.

There is going to be a lot of screaming along the way though.

They consider it oppression that they will have to accept a definition of marriage that allows for marriage that doesn't mesh with their religious viewpoint. But conservative Christian = Straight for some reason.

They also think they are being oppressed because they find it now increasingly unacceptable to voice blatantly disgusting opinions like "being gay is so wrong and unnatural I wish they didnt exist, they disgust me" and the like.

Also do the people making these comments not realize that:

1. Most gay people don't believe sexuality is a choice
2. If there were a huge decreasing population doomsday scenario, and sexuality was a choice, people could simply go straight/bisexual and have kids out of societal duty.
 
Come to think of it... accepting that Heterosexuality is not a norm, but just another set of sexual orientation, thus making it eligible for "protection" as opposed to a norm, which makes it basically untouchable anyway, opens up some interesting and probably unwanted angles.

If that's indeed what's behind that campaign, then that's amazing... although I doubt it.
