Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

Part of the reason I feel like this is while a lot of people are probably looking forward to certain upgraded versions of current gen games, like Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts...and some of the exclusives like Killzone, Infamous Second Son, and Knack...I gotta admit, none of these are jumping out at me at all beyond the feeling that "Yeah...I'd like to play them sometime" but as far as being a huge fan...that feeling is not really there for me. I'm not a huge fan of any of those titles, and I feel like I'm more excited about PS3 titles coming this year then any PS4 title announced yet.

Even I admit on some level this seems silly...hell, I was the kind of person who was excited enough to buy a Wii U, and a PS Vita on day one both times, so it probably sounds stupid to a lot of people why I would be okay with getting those at launch, but am second guessing a PS4. I am sure once the new systems are closer to release, I'll start feeling some of that hype again about a PS4, like I did around E3, but I feel like that's all it really is to me, hype.

As badly as the Wii U and Vita have been doing in terms of sales most of the time, for me personally they have been good investments because I am a big fan of certain games that came out for them. I love first party Nintendo games, and New Super Mario Bros U was a reason to buy the system for me day one. Since then I've genuinely really like my Wii U, and still play it regularly. I made a list of upcoming games this year that I want, and most of the games are for Wii U. I admit the Vita has slowed down quite a bit in terms of games coming out for it, but at launch I was excited because I'm a big Hot Shots Golf fan, and that was a system seller for me as well. Not to mention I knew Persona 4 Golden was coming.

It's these kind of reasons I'm considering holding off on the PS4 right now. None of the games announced for it compel to want to be there right away. I guess I should say that I'm more of a Japanese game fan, as well as games with good stories over something with a focus on multiplayer. Sure we'll get Kingdom Hearts 3, and Final Fantasy XV someday...but knowing Square-Enix, and based on what was shown...those are at least 2 years off I feel. I am excited for Destiny, but I also feel like that's at least late 2014.

I still want the system someday, but I think the launch window isn't really the time to get one. Is anyone else feeling the same way, and if not, what are you looking forward to about the PS4 in the first six months that make you want it at launch?

Getting consoles on day one is like playing Russian Roulette. It is wise to wait for those first ones that will most likely be defective get bought and fixed in the next version.

Theres no need to rush. Its almost always better to get a PS4 next year when more games have come out and the price is down and so you can finish off that backlog.

Thinking about cancelling my pre-order since the launch lineup seems pretty lame so far and all the multi-platform titles can be played on PC as well; I would get one when a heavy hitter alá MGSV releases

I jumped on the preorder wagon right after the keynote, because omg gotta get the thing that'll be rare at Christmas, gotta beat the scarcity. But not only are they not going to be rare, there's not a single PS4 game I'm interesting in paying $60 for at this point. So I'm seriously questioning whether I should keep that preorder.

Maybe Sony will announce something cool soon.

I'll probably wait for:

I'm thinking to buy Wii U instead. There are some games I would like to play. PS4 at the moment doesn't have japanese games I would like to try. Of course Sony can announce some nice games on Gamescom and TGS, but I don't think they will be available this year.

The only thing that makes me question my pre-order is my financial situation, which is not where I hoped it would be at this point. Other than that, I am so excited for Watchdogs (I am crazy about new experiences and open world games) that I absolutely have to experience in the best way possible.

Definitely day one but I do hope we see something from Japan as the console so far is very western focus with its software lineup. I can't see Japanese players been ecstatic with the games mentioned so far.

The most interesting next-gen games right now are multiplatform anyway. So if you have a decent PC, chances are you'll be playing them at the same fidelity or higher than that of a PS4/XB1 anyway.

I might get a PS4 in 2014 when I'm done with Dark Souls 2 on PC :D

Universal rule of console buying = get them whenever want, console holder will be the glad no matter what. They are perfectly aware that majority of the users will came WAY after launch.

Pretty much as well, there's nothing I really need to play and the following batches of hardware are usually more stable than the first one.

F2p games at launch too
New hardware
Hyped for next gen
Everything's bigger and better with next gen
Improved dualshock controller
Enough of a launch lineup, you can't expect to play every single of one them at once

I'm there Day 1

I think most people are buying it just because they want some new hardware after 8 frigging years.

There's nothing particularly compelling about the games on offer.

My concern is the post-launch drought from December until around May/June, that seems to happen with every new console. Hopefully there will be plenty of downloadable games during that drought to keep us busy - it's what saved 360 for me back in early 2006.

I was really excited on getting the PS4 day one, and eventually all gaming consoles, but seeing that I have a great PC for games, it seems rather pointless at this point.

I am getting all consoles for sure, but not day one like I envisioned. Already sold my Wii U, so that can could get me a better gaming monitor for right now. I'm more than ready for next gen at the moment, so I dont need a PS4.

In the future, I plan on getting all my consoles from the used/open box market. Great deals, great quality. Already bought a Vita and a 3DS at more than half the price. If the deals are the same for the X1 and PS4, I'd jump in.

I cancelled my PS4 pre-order. I'll get one but not for a year or so. The WiiU really burned me and I'm not going to experience that again.

We've got Dark Souls II in March on current consoles, there will be no drought :P

I cancelled my pre-order earlier today on the ps4. I have a Wii U and a bunch of games pre-ordered. I am going to use the ps4 money towards a new tv.

To be honest, I'm getting the PS4 at launch for Battlefield 4 alone. And what about The Witness? Is it confirmed for launch?

I admit it is fun being a part of the buzz of having new hardware, but I think that feeling for me would fade away once I'd realize "oh...wait...I paid $400 to play the same games I could've just been playing on my PS3..."

I really don't care about the hardware, and I don't really care that I've owned a PS3 since 2006...I care about games being fun to play, and a game being fun doesn't change because the hardware is old. Hell, look at all of us gamers that still love retro games...going back to our NES, SNES, Genesis..etc to play games from hardware that is at least 2 decades old at this point.

I know some tech geeks would probably say console versions of a lot of games these days don't look or run great at all, but I still had a hell of a lot of fun playing Bioshock Infinite on my PS3 this year. I'm sure it could look better on a PC, just like some of these current gen games will probably look better on the PS4...but I can still have just as much fun playing them on my PS3.

I pretty much always wait a year because of the price decrease and to ensure I have a decent library of games waiting for me without having to weather an inevitable games drought.

More importantly I can have an idea on where the console is heading in the near future, because in my experience what your impression of the console is now changes dramatically 6 months to a year on the market.

what are you looking forward to about the PS4 in the first six months that make you want it at launch?
I'm just ready for an upgrade is why I want one for launch.

Gaming has gotten boring since it's literally the same stuff since 2005. I need something new to experience fun again (and perhaps motivate me to play more games).

Cancelled my ps4/X1 pre-orders last week and bought myself a gaming pc.. Will definitely get new consoles down the road, but a mix of being tired of waiting and having no idea how reliable the two will be at launch got me to switch over plans for this year. I'll probably have small regrets at not being able to be part of the conversation when they release but otherwise super happy with my decision. First time pc gamer here, and steam/gamersgate/gmg prices are already spoiling me, some great deals the past weekend.

Personally, after E3 I'm waiting. I already have a Wii U and a PS3.

PS3 still has - Gran Turismo 6, GTA5, Dark Souls 2 and others I'm probably forgetting + all the cross gen titles I'll still get to play

Wii U has - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (yes I'm still playing this^^), Pikmin3, Mario Kart, X, Smash, ect.

Nothing I saw at E3 made me think "I need a PS4." However, while I may not get one at launch, I will certainly be getting one at some point. Just needs more games that I want. TES:online actually seems like my most anticipated game for PS4 atm as I only have an old laptop.

Launch line up does not particularly excite me, but I don't see a price drop for a year or two and it will be cool just to have new hardware and O/S to play about with.

A few pretty games for the first year which should be fairly fun before the next christmas releases hit and the real fun starts.

You should add me as a friend, I've been looking for more people to play MH3U with. I haven't really played it much, cuz I don't have as much fun solo, and my one friend who has a Wii U really doesn't play enough >_<

Its hard to say because i have not seen comparisons between CoD, BF4, NBA 2k14 and FIFA 14 between the PS4 and PS3. These are games i actually want to play. When the Wii U and Vita launched there wasent a single game i wanted to play, the U versions of FIFA, NBA, CoD etc were more or less the exact same games as the ones i can get on my PS3 and/or 360.

So for my it entirely depends on what they can achieve graphically at this point, i fully expect that next years FIFA15, NBA 2k15, Ghosts 2 or whatever will look much better as they will have more time to really make them look good.

If none of the launch games interest you, then it is probably best to hold off. After all why buy a system with no games that you want? You will just get a first impression of the console in your own hands.

Well honestly nothing at launch is all too interesting if you're not a FPS fan. I think the first retail game I'm hyped for is Second Son.

I have my doubts about Killzone and Watch_Dogs, but I'm hoping one of them turns out good. Besides that, I'm really tired of this gen and I can't wait for next gen to start.

Eh? This thread is about PS4. I'm talking about a PS4 drought.

Otherwise in your world there was no Wii U drought either!

Chill feels, it's a joke.

If you want a serious answer, yes there will be a drought. You want to buy a brand new product in the first year be prepared for first year problems. Personally, games like BF4 and Destiny will easily help in the first year knowing there is always something to come back to.

The launch lineup feels like a bunch of expansion packs instead of new games worthy of $60, but I'll probably end up buying a new console or 2 anyway

It's smarter to wait but less fun

If I was feeling rich I'd be there Day 1. I'm not, so I'll wait until a few great games come out. The launch line-up might look better after TGS and Gamescom though.

Sad but probably true :/

I bought WiiU for the same reason. Same games, kind of, but new hardware and a few new features is enough for me after all these years. Current gen has been meh for a few years imo even though a couple of surprisingly great games has arrived (The Last of Us and Tomb Raider for example).

Having the same thoughts.

I bought the PS3 launch (my first games console) and the lack of games (even demo's) was an issue.

None of the first part launch titles are appealing to me right now.

I've got Watch dogs pre-ordered but for PC. As per PS3, l only intend to buy platform exclusives as these titles tend get the best out of the machine.

So that leaves me hoping for plenty of demo's to tie me over.

if you have a pre order, then do not cancel it. by the time the system about to be released you will get all hyped again. right now its almost dead for both xbox one and PS4 since there are new news. and everything we have seen are from early builds.

cancel your pre order and you will regret it.

wait till the last month/couple of weeks then decide then.

we all right now i believe are in almost the same place as you
