‘The Walking Dead’ – Season 5, Part 1 – Sundays on AMC

Doesn't it seem weird that
the entire 2nd half of last season involved building up to them finding and eventually getting to terminus, only to realize something awful was going on, then have the whole thing wrapped up in one episode to start the season? Seems like the terminus arc should have taken at least 3-4 episodes to resolve itself, instead it seems all crunched into one episode, even with the ad hoc backstory jammed awkwardly in their to explain motivations. Could have been something that you discover over a few episodes to explain wtf happened. Instead it seems like the whole build up for the past 8 episodes was 45 minutes of bang bang and now its back to the woods again.

Very glad it was one episode. I don't see how you'd stretch "yeah we're cannibals, we're gonna lock you in a box" for multiple episodes unless they did a whole episode that was backstory on Terminus, which would be a horrible way to start a season after a finale that ended on a cliffhanger.

Ugh, I have a feeling the guy Tyreese DIDN'T kill (probably) will cross horrible paths with his sister, Sasha.

And then Tyreese learns some stupid lesson. Cue Butcher/Cattle line. Please don't do this.

To me, that 2nd half of season 4, while mostly about "going" to Terminus, was more a gigantic road trip, with separated groups (allowing to fill in some backstory/plot for characters that hadn't been given much, like Tyreese, Sasha, Bob, Beth, Michonne) as well as introduce Abraham & Co.

Only so much time you can spend in a Cannibal camp, and they used that time nicely, as well as create a decent antagonist in Gareth.

Loved the episode. Just saw it now. Haven't been this excited for a new season of Walking Dead since Season 2. Seeing Rick's and Tyrese's transformation, of no hold barred attitude was nice to see. Also learning more about the history of the Sanctuary was interesting to see and how that dude rose to become the leader.

COMIC SPOILERS

So that dude at the end of the THEN segment has to be Negan. I'm not convinced the Cannibals actually killed the group that took them over. I mean why make the guy look so similar to Negan, they had to know people would take notice of how much he resembled him. The only thing missing was Lucille and a 'fuck'. I also remember hearing about them casting a Negan for this season. We all thought it was too soon for him to show up, but this was a good way to foreshadow him.

EDIT: Just saw the debunk. Bummer. Oh well, I guess it wouldn't make sense considering Negan was anti-rape.

IIRC, they killed everyone except for the leader, who they kept in the nearby boxcar (as revealed in Talking Dead).

This premiere kicked ass.

That bottle rocket scene was 100% stupid but I loved it because of that. It reminded me of shooting the campfires in Shadow of Mordor to blow up the orcs.

Some random thoughts:

-This show is alright when people aren't saying things.
-That line-up was quite convenient for the main characters and Bob.
-Carl only had one line and it somehow was still terrible.
-That burning zombie is still quite far away from you. Instead of slowly crawling backwards try standing up and running away.
-I'm glad Carol didn't make the tank explode by shooting it.
-It's no miracle that Terminus fell with them all shooting at zombies from the hip.
-I wish they would stop dragging actors from The Wire into this.

this episode felt
like a whole season into one hour. The old Walking Dead would have dragged on the premise of Terminus for a whole season and they break out at the end. I was shocked to see them be out by the end.

The ginger guy has the smallest TV biceps I've ever scene, and they have him running around in a wife beater. I can't take that character seriously. He looks like an SNL character.

But what a fucking great way to start the season, hopefully they can keep this momentum. Also, Carambo.....amazing.

why

So much mindblowing stuff. Did I miss anything??

- Mary is Gareth's mom (not super mindblowing but whatever)
- Corpse on the slab is his brother that they were going to eat
- Crazy guy in train car was head rapist from the past
- first guy who got his throat slit was the hippy dude when rick and carol bumped into that couple where the woman died

that first guy with his throat slit was Sam
is also the Penguin on the new show Gotham
kudos to his acting skills

they stretched out the governor/woodbury story arc across two seasons and it dragged the story to a crawl. the show is at its best when the group is travelling and im hoping this is a sign that the current show runners are aware of this to avoid woodbury 2.0.

good premier, hopefully this season can maintain quality. not a fan of the mullet man and his need to keep the cure a secret. you'd think anyone with a possible cure would make copies in the event of death.

Yeah, I thought Terminus was gonna be Woodbury 2.0. Or worse, the Farm 2.0.

Am I the only one not looking forward to their interaction with
Gareth? When they meet him, I predict they're gonna spend a lot of time deliberating whether or not they should form an uneasy alliance with him or kill him. The answer should be obvious. They did just blow up his base and kill his friends and family. Ain't no way he isn't gonna want revenge. Unless they can contrive a reason that they have to let him live, I am not looking forward to it at all. Or maybe Rick gives him a little prison style machete to the head when we least expect it.

I don't think we will see
Negan & The Saviors
until the final episode at best.
The show still needs to lead them to
Alexandria
and how
Rick and co establish themselves there.
I could see this season ending with the introduction to
Dwight
and the
death of Abraham
and with the introduction to
Negan
at the very end. /comicspoilers

Is it just me or do anyone wish they'll throw a line in that talked about their character from the wire, say tyrese mention that he had a boxing gym before all this transpired

What the fuck is this

And did dude really make a red ring reference? The bottle rocket on first try... This show, it's something.

You guys are forgetting Carol's white trash background. She has probably launched so many bottle rockets that by now she's an expert with pyrotechnics.

It was a good shot, but with the rate at which the tank was leaking gas, that rocket only had to fly within the vicinity of the expelled gas to set off the explosion.

That is no problem for me at all. I just wish they'd give them some decent lines.

Episode was pretty good. The pacing was tight and felt just right. However, the show has been known for having solid openers and closers, but just about everything in the middle slows down to a crawl. I'm hoping that doesn't happen this time around.

We can expect lots of walking and arguing on what to do.

rick seemed to have a card up his sleeve from the end of last season through this episode, but apparently his plan was for stuff to repeatedly magically interrupt the executioners right before they get to main characters. Part two of his plan was to have someone he hasn't seen in months appear out of nowhere with perfect timing and take the whole place down.

I'm okay with characters getting lucky and lucking their way out of bad situations, but don't act like they have some clever plan and then have it be nothing..
