10 PS4 'Neo' Game Upgrades That Must Be Made - Digital Foundry

Metal Gear Solid V looked perfectly fine on PS4. Also, with all the post-release microtransaction fuckery, i don't think anyone should be playing a remaster of the game. :P

I definitely see Sony first party games like Uncharted 4 or Bloodborne getting Neo updates, and for third party games, definitely see that coming to Witcher 3 because Cd Projekt Red is awesome at supporting their games.

Allow me to submit my own list:

  1. Bloodborne
  2. Bloodborne
  3. Bloodborne
  4. Bloodborne
  5. Bloodborne
  6. Bloodborne
  7. Bloodborne
  8. Bloodborne
  9. Bloodborne
  10. Bloodborne

I doubt it, the rules for supporting older revisions on new hardware tend to be quite stringent for compatibility reasons. I expect them to underclock the CPU to OG PS4 speeds when running a game without NEO support, same way the New 3DS handles it.

I doubt the cpu being overclocked will effect anything negatively; it should be basically transparent. If it does affect things it would be the result of really bad practice in the code; I mean seriously if you consider the variance in performance between PC cpu's a small frequency bump to the same core-type is inconsequential comparitively.

I'd anticipate it being a flat overclock.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. Bloodborne and dark souls 3.

Throw in a Demons souls remaster and by a miracle throw in a Dark Souls with DLC remaster and I can die fucking happy.

Every souls game deserves to be in 60, especially bloodborne.

That intensive Tetris psn game should make the list.

I've heard it's graphics and intense physics really strain the PS4. Hoping for a Neo mode.

Uncharted 4 is only gonna be 30fps? that's disappointing. I thought the Uncharted games released at 60fps or was that just an upgrade in the Nathan Drake collection?

I would already be happy with some of those older games running at 1080P, at perfect locked 30 fps and great anti-alsiassing and some other effects.
If they can up that to 60 fps then great.

Pretty close to a list I would have made. The FF15 demo was shockingly bad and I will only play it brute-forced on a PS4K if at all.

Final Fantasy 14 (which looks and performs nicely today btw) at 1080p/60fps should be on the list.

RIGS will likely be 90fps native on PSVR/PS4K with some awesome AA (though no patches needed as it's releasing in October anyhow).

People are allowed to judge what they're given and what they're shown. And in FFXV has been looking rough at every instance on multiple fronts.
I don't think you get it, FFXV is months away from release with tons of optimization ahead of it, how does it belong on a list (at the top no less) of games that "must" get Neo upgrades. The retail version is so far out that it's ridiculous to say that FFXV needs a Neo upgrade more than any other game.

If they release a version of GTA V for Neo that is a rock-fucking-solid 60fps, 1080p, increased LOD & detail and improved lighting/shadows, that would be a system seller for me right there. My PS4 is already seemingly on it's way out of this life, the disc drive is constantly ejecting and the triple beeps are out of control.

Uncharted 4 is only gonna be 30fps? that's disappointing. I thought the Uncharted games released at 60fps or was that just an upgrade in the Nathan Drake collection?

Uncharted series on PS3 is 30fps, it's 60 on the Nathan Drake collection for PS4. Uncharted 4 is 30 fps single player, 60fps multiplayer.

Such a fascinating time to live in. The thing hasn't even been announced yet and outlets are already making wishlists.

Its digital foundry, what do u expect. The same guys that do performance analysis to games in Alpha state and from conference footage. Gotta milk them for the clicks.

I have no idea why people are shocked that a 2.3x gpu performance bump could allow a game to go from 30+ -> 60. Haven't they, for example, upgraded an old PC before?

Not all framerate problems are CPU bound, in fact I'd venture to say that the majority aren't outside of RTS/Open World/VR.

Additionally, lol @ people calling Digital Foundry out on performance speculation. Give them a little credit and watch the darn video.

EDIT: Added clarity as obv games won't go from sub-30 to 60, but games which are currently framelimited to 30 and can actually run higher can def. get to 60.

I don't know much about the subject, but I look at a game like Tomb Raider between X1 and PS4 and see how a 50% increase in GPU power with a slightly weeker CPU is able to achieve almost double the frame rate. This gives me hope on games that aren't open world.

Hoping they can stabilise res and get in some AA on XV by launch for the base PS4 version. Pausing in Platinum demo clears up the image and gives us a sense of what it could look like.

There will be no remasters of PS4 games on Neo. Compulsory support for Neo for new games, and optional free patches for older games.

As for all this FF15 discussion, we are basing it all on alpha demo. There is still time for them to fix things.

You mean the same people that inform consumers if a game is a technical mess, and have on numerous occasions, actually allowed certain bugs and graphical issues to be addressed and fixed by doing these analysis pre-launch (which they always highlight). This 'clicks' BS needs to stop.

Haha this some grade A bullshit. Dont believe any of this for a second guys

Care to explain why without writing a drive by shit post that's one line long? Your post contributes nothing.

GTA V is basically the only one that makes sense to me.

So MGSV's graphical features can't be improved, nor can the GPU bound areas in Witcher 3? How about the lock on Until Dawn? Or getting the stable frame rate in Black Ops III? No offence, but I don't see how the other suggestions are too crazy.

Why is this included?
Obviously a patch would not be needed to hit its current setup.
Could have at least added 4K or 1440p to make a need for a patch.

What do you mean? Just like other games, of course Until Dawn would have to be patched to get a locked and capped 30fps? What makes this different to other games? I honestly don't understand your comment because it doesn't make sense (as well as the 4K part...).

Such a fascinating time to live in. The thing hasn't even been announced yet and outlets are already making wishlists.

What's wrong with making wish lists on games that can get improvements? It's something Sony has suggested themselves in the rumours on the PS4K -- like, did you even watch the video?

FF15 isn't even out yet...

And he addresses that in the video. Still doesn't make his point moot in the context of what he said about the game possibly benefiting from better bells and whistles on PS Neo.

IMO, I think most of the devs will stick to the same framerate as PS4, only making it more stable and adding better GPU-driven visual effects. Ofc also resolution rise to full 1080p for those few games that feature dynamic res or 900p rendering.

Also, MGSV/GTA5 are more than fine on PS4. Sure, having better effects/LOD would be nice, but those games do not need to be on this list. They should have listed Fallout 4.

I agree with MGS5, but GTA has certain parts of the city that have frame rate issues that are CPU related, so they should at least take care of that with the faster CPU.

But yes, Fallout 4 should be patched.

Those pig slow 5400 RPM drives on SATA 2 really show their age. SSD is out of the question but at least Sony could throw us a bone and include faster drives.

I'd just like SATA 3 and SSD support

When did Digital Foundry start dipping their toes into the speculative bullshit market? The PS4K hasn't even been officially announced yet. Really not seeing how videos like this add anything to their brand.

I do wonder, games that fall short of hitting their targeted framerate, do they really need a patch to be improved? I mean, the increase in performance should theoretically keep it more stable since it's always struggling to hit the target, be it 30 or 60 fps.

Someone more technically competent may correct me if wrong.

They all seem reasonable, but how many can logically make that jump with just a GPU boost? A CPU boost of 33%, that doesn' even scale linearly with that GPU would seem like a challenge, I guess we'll see.

I know FF15, Until Dawn, Lichdom battlemage, BO3, Battlefront, Mirror's edge and Uncharted are all definitely viable options...but things like Shadowfall...its been 2 years, would Guerilla really go back and patch it at this point? And Driveclub as well considering how the team doesn't exist anymore...MGS5 seems like something konami would not even bother with.

Old games need to be patched, since the hardware automatically runs the original PS4 code by default without the NEO configuration applied

If Bloodborne gets patched, I'll definitely do a 4th playthrough.

Do we have any reason to believe publishers are going to pay for the development and QA necessary for updating "old" titles? I could see a first party title or two being upgraded by Sony as a PR move, but third party games?

I'd honestly love to see Street Fighter V get better textures similar to its PC counterpart, as well as solve the select few frame-drops found in one or two of the more power-intensive stages & the removal of shadow dithering. I'd also say make the background elements 60fps, but I'm not sure if the PC version fixed this issue or not.

I guess it's possible, if they think there's enough demand for it. Some players might buy the game again, if they've already sold it away, or played it on PC due to better performance. I wonder if it's possible for them to charge for the PS4K patches? Depending on the price and changes, I might pay for them, at least when it comes to my favorite games.

When is neo rumored to come out?

Some rumors say 4Q/2016, others 1Q/2017. I guess Sony will make an announcement on E3.

----------------

I don´t think we will see that much Neo-patches for third party software. Battlefront maybe, cause there is still DLC coming out for it when Neo launches.

GTA V I'd rather have 60 FPS over increased graphic fidelity. The game looks fantastic on the PS4 anyway.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 at 60 FPS would be downright amazing.

A completely locked 30 FPS capped Witcher 3 would be great.

I'm surprised Fallout 4 wasn't on the list. It is in dire need of a patch to at least get a fully locked 30 FPS and increased shadow draw distance.
