Well, not a max contract, but pretty close. Basically everyone except Dirk, Marion, and Haywood does not have a guaranteed contract. If they can trade Haywood, they can amnesty Marion, leaving only Dirk, basically. And the new CBA has a provision where you can renegotiate existing contracts downward per year up to 40% so long as the total money is the same, by adding extra years to the contract. So it wouldn't be easy, but it's definitely possible for them to get to where their payroll next year would be Dirk at about $13 million. That would be enough for both.
That won't work with Dirk as much because of the over 36 rule would still be in effect for his contract. Any money past the age of 36 is considered to not be reached and therefore added into the years prior to turning 36, so if they renegotiate Dirk's salary that way, the over 36 rule re-negotiates is back for cap purposes so nothing changed except Dirk earns less per year. In fact, if Dirk extends his current contract right now, next season's cap hit rises.
Also, you are assuming they trade Haywood for nothing but expirings or a TPE. I highly doubt that happens even if they take less salary back. Who is taking on that massive contract for fun? Or if it comes back with picks this season, more salary added. And Beaubois is going to have his option picked up. Same with Jones. And Odom counts as $2.4 million if they waive him.
Then there are minimum roster cap holds. If they amnesty Haywood and waive Odom, they are at around $42 million in cap holds. If they trade Haywood for let's say $6 million in salary per year and amnesty Marion, they are at $38-39 with a $58-60 million salary cap, most likely. Again, only room for 1 max.
Even in a miracle situation with no haywood, marion, and Odom waived and keeping the rookie contracts, that leaves them with at most $28 million in cap space, not enough for 2 max contracts (I believe Dwight and Deron's max would start at $17+ million).
Miami's big 3 was different because Wade was a UFA so he could take less money. Dirk is at $21 million, $6 million above where Wade was. That's $6 million less starting point. Also, Dirk can't defer money later because of the over 36 rule, so there's no way around it with a contract renegotiation that I know of.
Realistically, they will make room for 1 max and 1 bit above MLE player size contract while keeping Marion and Beaubois and Jones.

Rivers tells AP that Pierce is "doubtful" for opener vs. Knicks. "We'll know better on Saturday." Pavlovic likely to start in his place.
WTF, when did Pierce get hurt?
