well, that kind of sucks. I did everything right the first time but I'm locked out the good ending without first getting one of the other bad ones? Hmm.

Not to mention the story fleshes out more if you've seen the bad endings.

I'm still working through guideless.

So i just got the letter ending.

Wow, well that was something. So that's four endings down.

I really like how certain rooms change slightly and give more information about characters if you follow them through in specific orders. I've really grown to enjoy the cast. Behind the cheesy character designs, there's a pretty cool story being told.

It's funny, the repeat playthroughs really kill the suspense and thrill of the first playthrough, which is a bit of a shame because I would have liked that to carry forward to the actual ending, but at the same time I've really enjoyed slowly learning new things about the characters and seeing how they react in different situations. So I you lose something vital, but gain a replacement that you didn't even expect you wanted. That's a cool thing only a video game can do, I suppose.

The best analogy I can think of is a magician deliberately showing you the compartment where he keeps the rabbits, then pulls a rhino from the hat instead. The trick is spoilt temporarily but then something else replaces it and hits you even harder.

Just finished with the true ending after receiving the axe ending (thus giving me all five alternate endings).

Just got right ahead and change the rhino to a giraffe.

GAME RUINING SPOILERS IN TAGGED TEXT
I think I understand most of it, but there's one or two big questions I still need to mull over.
The most obvious being what was up with present day June/Zero? How was she able to build the game, else instruct Santa to do it, kidnap the people, then participate in the game?

Who was that woman on the road?

Was it present or past June that had access to the different time-streams? If so how many time-streams?

I guess I'll just have to look forward to 999-2? Any word on that?

What a fantastic experience. Thanks to everyone around here who spread the gold word, I'd have never have tried it otherwise.

Oh, and while I'm at it:

turning the DS upside down for the final puzzle? Fucking ingenious. The seamless cut-back an forths between the past and present in the incinerator? Unexpectedly classy stuff.

What else have this team made?

Haha, you'll be surprised when you learn the answer.

It was localized by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aksys_Games. They seem to be a decent American/Japanese conduit. They also did Theresia, which is similar to 999, but is sooooo user unfriendly it's almost unplayable. In fact, Theresia may as well be the prototype of 999 in how it tries to make a horror-novel into a game.

The specific developer of 999 was Chunsoft.

Look up Chunsoft and report back how surprised you were.. I certainly was.

Well, the writter is Kotaro Uchikoshi, which I think it's his first game with Chunsoft.

He also wrote Ever 17 which is a visual novel. Maybe he'd be interested in checking that.

Theresia was so good once you got past it's terribly user friendliness.

The fact that Chunsoft developed 428 makes me thing I need to grab 999 right now.

I just think it's funny how Chunsoft is responsible for Dragon Quest all the way back to the NES.

Some companies' talents fade with time, but Chunsoft clearly learned how to evolve with the changing market.

Past June is saved by Junpei through the events that take place in the game and that she sees, so she has to replicate them in the future to survive, with the help of Santa and Seven (who implies that he didn't lose his memory at all in the ending). The fever attacks she has happen because Junpei makes a "bad" choice, so past June is getting closer to her death and present June would stop existing.

Who was that woman on the road?

Alice, the Egyptian woman who was supposed to be hidden in the ship and is mentioned several times during the game. It's mostly just a little joke at the end.

Was it present or past June that had access to the different time-streams? If so how many time-streams?

It's past June. She sees many outcomes (among them the ones in the game), but exactly how many it's not really said, I think.

I guess I'll just have to look forward to 999-2? Any word on that?

No, not yet, but I think Chunsoft said that there would be one if the interest is there.

Do it. I'm not too far, but I already regret not playing this in 2010. I bought it at launch and everything. :\

Because of instead of adding the shit stain that is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to my GOTY list, I could have added this.

Ah Hell, I'm just going to retcon my original list. Replace Lords of Shadow with 999. Although as it stands, the latter would rank much higher on my list.

Quick question about getting one of the endings

I'm currently following the flowchart and I'm in the
Operating Room
part. If I want to get the
Coffin
do I give the
4 leaf clover to Clover on not?

If that's what you're going for, then by all means
you give the clover to Clover (and make sure you've asked Seven about Ice-9 when prompted)
.

Hmm, page 49 (for me, anyway). Since the digital root is 4, it seems like just a good excuse as any for posting a fan art found that I'm pretty sure I hadn't seen here yet.

I got grudge sucked!
Got the true ending last night. To me this is like Hotel Dusk, great characters but the plot is a bit weak once you tie everything together. There is still the issue that
past Akane has now either created a perpetual loop where she and Santa have to kidnap everyone again to re-run the test so Junpei can save her yet again, or since she survived in the past, there would be no need for any of the present to occur. Seven wouldn't have let Ace go free or at least wouldnt have not gone to the press to report Cradle Pharm, no need to get revenge because nobody died. Its almost like they didn't know how to address that issue. It would have been better if once June inputs the sudoku solution and gets out of the incinerator, the entire present changes. Logically, that makes more sense. The whole driving force for why the test was done no longer exists. It would have been more interesting to see Junpei go out that door into somewhere entirely different and he can only remember certain things of that now alternate reality

Just got coffin as my first ending. Man, it was ridiculously abrupt and it was kind of unsatisfying. Oh well, at least I can browse GAF while I hold down right on the D-pad... moves quick enough, I think. Hopefully the game begins to branch out soon. Really enjoyed the game so far, but I was NOT expecting the game to end dead in its tracks after
Santa kidnaps June and forces Ace and Lotus through the door, followed by the knocking on the coffin's interior. It was getting really creepy and interesting. They investigate the coffin and they can't figure out the code and.... THE END!

Also, couldn't Seven, Junpei, and Clover gone back and retrieved Snake's hand/bracelet? 7+5+4+2= 18= 9. I was expecting this to occur before the game ended. Although, it has been a couple days since I had played that portion (or 9's death scene, for that matter), so I can't remember if the bracelets break or something like that after the bomb goes off

The bracelet there was indeed broken after the bomb went off. Also, keep in mind that that ending went with "To be continued..." instead of something more conclusive
.

That said, keep playing. The other endings are quite important to getting the full picture (they'll create new questions, but answer many old ones as well).

Ok I just got both
Coffin
and
Safe
endings.

The Coffin ending makes Santa have the gun and he goes crazy. But then in the Safe one, it's Ace that goes crazy. There must be a reason for that. It did clear one thing, in the Axe ending, Ace must have told Lotus to come with him so he can use her bracelet and I think he was the one that killed her in the Knife ending as well. Also it makes me question what the hell Clover would have done in the Axe ending if the 0 bracelet was a 6. And still the Submarine ending and Guy X aren't explained. The True ending better clear all of that.

One more ending and I will be done with the game. Then I can finally read all the spoilers tag in this thread.

Haha, maybe I did. With all the tension in the game and all this talk of the bad endings that are possible, I was expecting my first ending to be Junpei getting betrayed and blown up in the door 9 entrance or something.

Damn the coffin ending! It was getting pretty darn exciting, too! Man, this game does move fast on the extra playthroughs though. Main complaints in the reviews I read have been redoing puzzles (they go really fast) and having to hold right (I just browse GAF while it is skipping through scenes at a surprisingly quick pace), and it's taking no time at all. Legitimate complaints, for sure, but it's not that bad at all.

Okay, fuck it. Just give me the answer to this part of this puzzle.

The one in the torture room, with the 4 double switches (for both sides of the head). These pointy blocks are driving me nuts.

Edit: Figured it out.

Ok I just got the last and true ending. I have a lot of questions and stuff but I'm already too tired. I just have one question about another ending.

So who exactly was it that killed us all in the Submarine ending? I still can't figure that part out.

All signs point to Ace, having faked his death to kill everyone else.

1./Of the people by the central staircase, Junpei and crew only verified Clover's death.
2./The victims were each stabbed to death, Ace having picked up the knife and bracelet left behind by the 9th Man after his death (confirmed by the safe ending).
3./Ace was the only one with a motive to take Lotus' bracelet, hers once again being the only one stolen, just like in the knife ending. In the ax ending, this was the reason for him escorting Lotus to "show her something". Then of course, there was his need to take her hostage laid out in the open in the safe ending, where it was confirmed he needed her specifically to open door 9.

So yeah, unless something insane comes out of the Q&A, it was Ace.

Ah alright thanks

I knew someone faked his death but it could have been anyone. I was leaning towards Clover but I didn't know they confirmed her death so ya it's probably Ace.

Ok, got a second ending.

This time, someone kills everyone, and Junpei is left dying in the water by the submarine.

The first ending I got was where Ace is a total bad dude from Cradle, Clover is killed, Snake dies killing Ace, and Junpei get knocked out by Zero at the end, after losing June.

Time to keep unlocking those doors...

I've been playing this the past few days and it wasn't really all that captivating. I was getting annoyed with the pacing of the text (really? no text speed controls or just letting me tap a button to throw all the text on the screen?), the puzzles were too easy and I was REALLY getting tired of having the game explain controls all the damn time.

Then I get near the end. And then I got creeped out. And then I got the bad ending.

And now I dig this game a ton. Can't wait to get home today to start over and figure out where it all went wrong. :)

Finally finished the game today with all five endings. Gotta say, I haven't played a game this compelling in a long time. They took the potentially frustrating/worrisome concept of having to play through the game multiple times and made it work really well. Each time I played it, I felt like there was the right amount of additional story and character development, capped of course with a ton of revelations in the end. Being able to fast-forward prevented it from being a chore, and speed-running through puzzle rooms was actually kind of enjoyable.

The music, while not something I'd listen to outside of the game, fit perfectly. Really helped to accentuate the near-constant tension/dread throughout the game.

I'd love to play more games like this. Do similar titles exist?

The story is kinda dependent on you getting bad endings first.

If you really want, use a spoiler-free FAQ to get the two main endings.

Don't be a chump! Nobody gets the good ending the first time through.
It's impossible.

The game gets better the more endings you get, and the experience of playing through them is critical.

There's a nice progression story and character-wise each time you play through the game, and you can fast-forward text you've seen so it's not super annoying or time-consuming like you might think. I understand being a bit apprehensive at first, but the subsequent playthroughs are still enjoyable and the payoff in the end is so worth it.

On my third playthrough, just need a bit of help.

Chose to roll with Ace and Lotus, but don't know what door to go through. 4 or 5 (both of which I've been through already, on my previous playthroughs)? I'm just trying to avoid duplicating an ending here.

Which endings have you gotten before? There is also a spoiler free flowchart for the endings if you want to take a look at it. It has the endings names but I don't think it's much of a spoiler

The one where Ace goes nuts, kills Clover, holds Lotus hostage, Snake dies killing, and Junpei is gassed right after losing June. Don't know the name, maybe that's the Coffin?

Bad endings are PART of the game. If you don't get bad endings, you're missing some of the most important parts of the story. A bad ending doesn't mean "you lose." If anything, a duplicate ending means "you lose" and simply seeing a new ending is progress.
