999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors |OT| RED, DEAD, Redemption

I agree, I just think it's a hard sell for a lot of people on GAF. It's a DS game when a lot of people have moved on from their current handhelds (at least, as hype threads and GOTY votes go) and it's a visual novel, which is not something that necessarily has a fervent fanbase in the west.

That said, it's been awesome to see the slow growing movement of players for the game... it seems like 95% of people that give it a try love it to death. I recommend it to everyone I can, hopefully we can push enough to get a sequel :)
I was one of the few people that were really hyped to play this game pre-release and I expected just to see the core adventure game people hanging around the thread, and then all of a sudden the topic just skyrocketed.

I am so happy to see this game be so well received. Niche genres can work in different markets as long as the quality is there, and this game is the perfect example of that.

Start from the Phoenix Wright fanbase, it'll blow up from there. ;P

I see no Red Dead Redemption here. The hell is this shit?

But seriously, nice subtitle. Let's hope it brings in a new wave of interest.

RED, DEAD (the bracelet reader machines XD), and then redemption at the end of the game XD

Speaking of that, gotta find their hub and pimp 999 there haha

Amazon emailed me this weekend to say that my copy should finally arrive next week.

I don't have anything to actually add to the discussion yet, except my happiness.

And also, I guess, a bit of praise. Keep it up, you guys. Without GAF, I wouldn't have known enough about the game to go ahead with the purchase.

Yeah, I get it, was just being a smartass like all those guys that just go into icecream threads to troll :D

Also, you Aksys guys need to send Giantbomb a copy. There's enough adventure game types over there who'd likely enjoy the game (assuming they aren't initially turned off multiple endings bit), and they haven't mentioned the game at all since it came out AFAIK.

I would like to see their reactions to it as well. I know I enjoyed their Persona 4 Endurance Run. A quick-look would be sufficient, even.

I would fucking love to see the GB dudes freak out over this

I'm still waiting to see if any of them picked up Ghost Trick after the Quick Look though

Yeah, I always like when fankits are made available, so I'm glad Chunsoft allowed us to distribute the art to the fans via the fankit :)

I suspect Giant Bomb would say, "Too many words!" But who knows?

I have to say, I really hope the success of 999 can jumpstart a niche base for visual novels on consoles/handhelds. There's been a strong fan community on PC for a while, with many solid fan translations, but there's a lot of interesting titles that don't make it to the PC and that deserve official releases.

My mind has been blown. Completely.
Haven't played a game this gripping in AGES.

How about the part where
you turn the DS upside down?
Best plot twist in a video game, right?

I thought that was interesting. But you know what? Throughout the whole thing I could only think,
"Man, she should have been dead a long time ago." NO ONE CAN DO SUDOKU THAT FAST, DAMMIT! :p I thought the music/image of her crying was so gripping, too.

I'm an hour or two into the game now (just finished the Casino room) on my first playthrough, and I'm really enjoying it so far. It is very different from most anything I usually play, but it is compelling.

True, but 999 is denser and has longer non-interactive sections than Phoenix Wright and Layton - it leans much more towards the straight-up novel side of ADVs. There's no guarantee that you'll like one if you like the other. But as I said, who knows?

They also have someone who's heavily into narrative and story and primarily play games for that (Vinny), who also is an adventure game fan. We'll see (if any of them manage to get to play it).

Ah, yes - was Vinny the one who was pimping Silent Hill: Shattered Memories? He might enjoy this then.

Hot damn, Safe ending. Madness.

/edit how traumatic is the Sub ending? Or should I play it to get a complete understanding?

If you have all the other endings, it's not crucial, but if you don't mind going through it you should give it a go, as it will give you a bit more perspective on the true ending.

That was actually Brad, at least during the GOTY discussions. Vinny might have gone on to play it after, though. They all seemed pretty intrigued by what Brad told them.

Vinny and Brad can both be pretty intrigued by offbeat stuff, but Brad never forgives what he considers to be bad gameplay, no matter how into the story he is. And what he might think is "bad" at any given time is sometimes up in the air.

Argh, I've never felt so tense in a visual novel before... mind you, this is the first 'bloody' kind of visual novel I've played...

ANDDDDDD I'm done. Jesus christ on a motorbike, I can't tell if I'm happy or freaking confused about the ending

:D Definitely check out the spoilers thread and read through it! Hopefully it'll clear up some of those lingering questions you have.

I wonder if it's indicative of the type of gamer that I am that the two best games I've played so far in 2011 have been visual novels... (Ghost Trick and 999)

Eff that, I totally did it in time (I timed myself, did it with fourteen seconds to spare)

So did everyone pretty much get the worst ending possible on their first play through? I knew I would for some reason and I did not disappoint!

Definitely, everyone got a bad end cuz the decisions seemed right or made sense at the time. Very cool.

I got the knife ending, which I'd say is the worst ending possible - it reveals some important points to the plot, but not a whole lot.

My favorite (besides the to canon endings) is definitely the axe ending.

This game turned out to be my GOTY for 2010, which was incredibly surprising since I picked it up on a whim.

i aced it on my first time through like the expert-pro I am, but as the story goes, that wasn't enough. I then spent ages trying to figure out how to prevent certain characters getting into certain rooms using digital root shenanigans only to realise I made the right choices to start with.
