WHO DEY!?
It is a nothing more than a rumor but that sounds cool to me. And as a bonus, whytemyke called this earlier in the "Katie Holmes dumped from batman sequel" thread:

How about Joker? Honestly, I think Jim Carey could be an awesome joker, but his appearance in a former Batman movie precludes him from doing anything in these ones. Jude Law may be a really cool choice, but they'd have to fuck him up so his face doesn't get more press than his role does. You've gotta have someone that's deadly serious...that's what makes joker so awesome. You know who'd be AWESOME, but they'd never get? Sean Penn. It'd be sweet to see him try something like this. I also liked it when someone mentioned Adrien Brody for the role, too.

Here is link to the rumor:

I can't really see anyone other than Jack Nicholson as the Joker. I wish that they wouldn't use him as a character, but I know it's an easy move to get people in seats. I just hope it doesn't make the movie more about the villain than Batman, like all of the previous movies.

I don't know, how about Crispin Glover?

I don't think they should go with any huge mega-movie-stars for these new Batman movies. They tend to take away more from these sort of movies than they bring to them IMO. Its one of the things that bugged me about the previous Batman series of films. In every one of the old Batman movies the villains were always bigger stars than the person playing Batman so the movies became all about them.

They should keep doing what they are doing now. Stick with talented, well known (but not overly popular) actors. This formula has worked well with Spiderman and it will continue to work well with this new series of Batman films. IMO most of the big movies stars nowadays couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. They got where they are pretty much on looks alone.

Sean Penn is a talented actor but I haven't seen him do anything really good in ages. Maybe 10+ years. I didn't think his performances in I Am Sam and Mystic River were really that good. His portrail of a mentally retarded person was the same as I've seen from any other actor (ie totally wrong). I don't know what it is but Hollywood actors always seem to play retarded people like they are 5 years old. His performance in Mystic River was pretty much "meh" outside of one or two scenes.

Crispin Glover and Adrien Brody both sound like good choices for the Joker though.

Hang out with Steve.
Can you really imagine JEFF SPICOLI as the Joker?

SCENE: JOKER'S LAIR. The air is filled with SMOKE. JOKER and his MINIONS are relaxing on a beat-up SOFA. With a crash, BATMAN breaks through the window.

JOKER: I know that dude!

I really want to hit people that think Jack Nicholson is the definitive Joker.

The Joker is not a pudgy middle-aged guy.

I liked Nicholson a lot. He was pretty good in the role, and made the film very enjoyable. I honestly don't care if he was the Joker, but I understand what is being said.

I understand he is not the Joker, and would like to see someone else's interpretetion.

Sean Penn would not a good joker make. That's like casting Ethan Hawke in the role or something. Just wait and see, people.

Considering that Batman Begins has only been out for a week and a half, I'd take any of these stories for casting on the sequel with a huge grain of salt.

Sean Penn would suck as the Joker. I just don't see him having the qualties needed to play the role, and would he want to go "slumming" in a comic book movie? He's takes his acting very seriously, to the point where he doesn't even acknowledge Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Besides, doesn't he have other obligations in Iran or something.

The Adrian Brody suggestion doesn't sit well with me either. Not a big fan of Adrian Brody. He just doesn't feel right for the role.

Nicholson didn't play the Joker. He played Jack Nicholson dressed up as the Joker.
repeated for emphasis.... Batman vs. crazy Jack Nicholson was an entertaining movie.. I won't argue otherwise... but can we stop like Jack was even playing Joker as anything related to the comic book whatsoever??

This new series of movies is more in line with the comic. As such I want to see a Joker that actually can/will look and act like the joker.. not some reimagining of the Joker by way of Jim Carrey (which is what would happen) or Jack Nicholson et al.

I wouldn't want another Nicholson-Joker in a new Batman movie. I know that it just wouldn't work. That's not what Nolan is going for. But as far Burton's image of Batman and Gotham is concerned, I thought the portrayal of the Joker worked pretty well.

This thread needs more Mark Hamill, the perfect Joker.

It's never going to happen. Penn is too old. And if it's not on BOF, it's not a legitimate rumor. They say that as of this morning, the current leaders in the Joker sweepstakes are Lachy Hulme, Crispin Glover and Paul Bettany. That is all.

Willco,

How old is the Joker supposed to be?

My biggest preference is an unknown.

His age can range all over the place. It's generally assumed he's in his 30ish/40ish in the comics.

I've read Warner Bros. is primarily looking for actors under 45. And unfortunately, Mark Hamill doesn't fit the bill.

Who cares! He's way better than everybody else! They can make him look younger. He'll be covered in make-up anyway.

Plus, his face is already deformed! It means less work for the makeup crew!

Just read this on imdb.com....

British actor Paul Bettany has joined the race to play Batman's nemesis The Joker in a planned sequel to Batman Begins. Director Christopher Nolan left no doubt The Joker would feature heavily in the next Batman installment when the villain, formerly played by Jack Nicholson, left a calling card in the final scene of the box office smash hit. And now Batman fansites are desperately trying to make sure producers pick the right man for the job. Crispin Glover was an early favorite, along with Star Wars' Mark Hamill, who provides the voice of The Joker in the Batman animated series and Aussie actor Lachy Hulme, and now Bettany has got the fans' vote. An insider tells website Batman-on-film.Com that the A Beautiful Mind star is officially in the running to play the evil character.

As an aside, Batman 1989 was on last night (late, 3:30 am) and I watched about an hour of it...wow, Jack Nicholson SUCKED as the Joker. Gawd, he was horrible. And Michael Keaton's shitty Bruce Wayne made me appreciate how good Christian Bale nailed the Bruce Wayne role. His Batman was alright, nothing special.

I know it's pretty much never done in big hollywood movies, but it'd be great to have Hammil just do a voice over for the joker. He's a bit old, and I dunno if he really looks the part, but I'll be damned if there's a single human being alive who could do the Joker Voice any better.

Batman & Robin was on last night for me. It was fun to watch though, cause I found a new Arnold cold reference.

Hammil's joker was great for the animated series, but its too cartoony. I can't imagine that voice on a crazyl, psychopathic, serial killer Joker. In the cartoons he was pretty much harmless, i doubt that will be the case in the movie. They could definately find someone to do a better job than Hammil would do. Casting him as the Joker, or as the "voice" would be absolutely stupid.

Yeah, Batman 1989 came on right after that (I got the end of B&R when Nicole Kidman was making out with Bruce Wayne). TNT, right?

Nicole Kidman is in Batman Forever, not Batman and Robin.

Oh, well it looked like her. Did Batman Forever end with the Batsignal and then Batman and Robin running in front of it? Casue that's how this one ended. All I saw was the last 5 minutes or so. I just know it also had Jim Carrey as the Riddler. Can't remember which one that was.

Yup that is Batman Forever.

I know its hard to tell em apart since they are basically same movie with a different cast.

Um, are people actually trying to suggest a black guy for the role of Joker?

Seriously, fuck you guys.

Woah, woah, woah.. woah.

If Don Cheadle attempted the role you wouldn't give him a shot?

Besides that whoever plays Joker has his face plastered in white and his hair dyed green.. this isn't a race specific role. The only limiter is the ability to portray a psycho.
