All-New Press Previews of Final Fantasy XV's First 5 Chapters

Hey man, since you are here I wonder if you would mind elaborating on your comment in regards to framerate a little bit? Like how bad the drops were to you? Platinum Demo bad, pre-patch Witcher 3 bad or post patch Witcher 3 bad?

I would really appreciate it if you could talk a little more about how framerate is and how frequent or noticeable the drops are.

Are you asking because you're torn on weither you'll buy or not a PS4 Pro because of that ?

The FFXV large setpiece battles (of which we've only seen titan so far) aren't exactly new, but the fact that they exist in an open world is why they're so neat.

In God of War 3 for example, the scale of giant setpiece battles are limited only to that specific setpiece. But in FFXV, at least judging from Ramuh, the flying car, and the height you can get to in the Platinum Demo citadel, the scale exists everywhere. So it's not unreasonable from a technical level to be running around in a city, then fight a giant boss in that city that uses the city as a setpiece. It is pretty impressive. I'm really wondering how far they'll take it. But if the hand is all there is to the Titan fight, i'm really not that surprised.

Being able to fighting an unrestrained Titan himself not only wouldn't make sense in the plot of the story (seeing as summoned titan is RUNNING and throwing boulders), but would be really hard to actually do. This isn't Kingdom Hearts, Noctis WILL die if he falls too far, he can't fly, and aerial attacks aren't free of resources.

They COULD do that kind of fight, where it's just tiny Noctis vs. a creature the size of Titan. But i imagine it would require the player to have mastered warp points and resource management.

Yeah, it could be interesting, making it a fight where Noctis can't fall or he'll die, forcing the player to stay in the air, and use warp points strategically positioned throughout the arena in order to replenish their MP.

But maybe it'll happen, who knows. At least as the optimal way of finishing the fight, even if it's not mandatory.

For example, we've seen that hunt with the flying creature, you don't have to chase it with airstep and warp strikes, but it's definitely a more optimized (and more fun) way of fighting it than just waiting on the ground until it comes back.

The Phantom Link looks like it could be a cool feature, but I want to see what it can do later in the game when more weapons are unlocked. I wonder if it will have any effect?

The continued previews seem to all be really good. There's even some people getting to partner with GameStop stores in EU to play the final build I was seeing on Reddit. Cannot wait for

You're posting in a thread that's flooded with links to videos of this from all over. You can see the framerate for yourself. I understand they're youtube videos and are subject to a bit of compression, but if it's looking smooth on youtube, it'd mean it's looking at least as smooth on the original.
The videos looked good to me at first. Could've noticed them a little bit but thought they were due to Youtube compression. But after reading Jason's comment I'm not so sure anymore.

Nah, I'm sticking with my OG PS4. Just a little worried that's all.

If you need that much of a microscope to maybe see a framerate drop, then I'd say it's probably stable enough to be fine.

The pre-review build wasn't the final build, either, so it's also still a bit premature.

I'm very interested to see how the Adamantoise fight ends up going. And they've shown other similarly large set piece battles, like Noctis warping from a train to Imperial ships during what I assume is a major battle.

The only real times I notice framerate drops are when I'm rotating the camera - if you try to spin it around, it'll chug to 20-25 as you're panning the world.

I'm sure there are some times it goes sub-30 during combat and big setpieces, but I haven't really noticed it. It's a WORLD of difference from Duscae, which had framerate issues all over the place.

expect it to be very very long and boring.

I expected this as well...until I saw the snips of the Aranea fight.

Warp striking her in the air triggered multiple contextual animations, which was something I really wasn't expecting to see happen since Noctis has plenty of attacks in the air without them.

There's really no telling what the fight will be like, but there are all sorts of ways they could make it interesting.

I'm not expecting it to be as boring as the Behemoth/Cato fight in Episode Duscae, which weren't really meant to be fought with only 20% of the actual battle engine finished.

Yeah, in the hands of people who know what they're doing, fights can look really amazing. Weapon switching, warpstrikes, then cancelling your attack in midair to a warp point to rest before going back at it....not to mention Armiger...i can't wait to get my hands on this game lol

One thing that hasn't been covered or at least I've maybe missed from these previews: how does the save system work?

I get the feeling from the previews there's only one save file. Does anyone know more about it? It's still a preview build so maybe it doesn't have the full save system, but I'm really hoping you can make multiple manual saves. I like being able to go back to a scene or fight without having to go through another new game especially if the new game+ mode of a game is barebones.

Nope, there are multiple save files (I have at least 6) and autosaves.

Someone/somewhere confirmed you can have multiple save files....I forgot where but it was in this thread somewhere.

I think there are auto-saves at camps and checkpoints but other than that I'm not sure what other kind of system it uses.

Obviously no spoilers - but have you seen anything amazing that hasn't been already shown in media form yet?

Like bosses, towns etc.?
Not really. I feel like the first five chapters have been pretty thoroughly shown off in videos and previews etc. I'm really excited for the last 10 because I don't think we've seen much (if anything) from them yet.

Does the game feel like it will be as big as Witcher 3? Not the game world (which looks bigger in size but with less dense content), but the story/main content?

Yeah, tbh, it surprised me too. Maybe just because it's against an human being instead of androids or monsters. Though I feel bad for all the innocent Garulas and Rhinos too :(

I think it has to do with Ignis psychopathic cooking...

...Picture this for one sec

say our world suddenly gets invaded with demons and monsters- would you honestly make a burger out of Satan or something like that?

Had there been no cooking garula steaks I wouldn't feel bad for them or the giraffes the giraffes are the worst imo, you seen the baby one in that famtisu preview oh man :(

Are you asking if I'd eat a Satan burger? Because hell yes I'd eat a Satan burger. It's probably spicy.

It wasn't hard for me to see them. Sorry if my post wasn't clear enough. They were noticeable but I thought they were due to compression on videos which apparently wasn't the case.

Also, I don't know why but I feel like you think I'm trying to shit on the game or nitpick on it which I assure you is not the case. It's genuinely something that I'm worried about. Sorry if my earlier replies or my tune suggested otherwise.

Ah, that sounds rough with camera. Hopefully that day one patch that they are releasing for the camera fixes this as well. Though, it's good to know that the performance is almost perfect during fights.

At any rate, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

I don't think you're nitpicking or shitting on the game at all and apologize if I came off that way :p

I don't think frame rate matters until the final build, though. That and it's so improved since the demos even if the youtube videos are perfect representations. We've seen scenes with all kinds of stuff on the screen and it's not been and issue, and I've see small moments where it looks like it drops to about 25 when fighting three enemies. But it never looked like it would be anywhere near as noticeable or distracting as it was in the demos, and by a long shot. I've also seen clips of people intentionally spinning the camera around and it looked positively perfect. Every frame was evenly spaced.

The problem is, without some kind of pattern to it, I'm not sure you can even tell if any frame drops are from overheating or something rather than something you're likely to deal with in the game.

LOL! you can order Prompto to take picture mid-fight!

Can see myself having so much fun with this, especially trying to capture the dudes getting smacked. I hope there's a thread for sharing Prompto photographs when the game releases. And I love the casual clothes!
another preview video/thoughts from BitSocket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQCG2U0Qcac
Thanks for this, I really enjoyed it! Loved it when they were riffing on the eggs. It really took me back, I was living in Scotland when Versus was announced and we all chatted about it in school...good times. My favourite videos so far have been when the people showing the game were bantering with each other. It's fitting :)

It would be fun if Noctis' animations become more and more brutal as the story progresses, to reflect his increase in power but also as a reminder of the "Omen" trailer.

Wow, so pretty much everything we've seen is from the first third of the game? And the press don't know what's in the final 10 chapters? :-O

And it should fucking stay that way. Seriously. I don't want to see or hear about more than what I already have.
