Andor |OT| Disney+

This is awesome. Scenes of just people acting. Long scenes with acting. The first star wars product that doesn't feel like a toy advert. I really like how they're just treating the star wars aspect as backdrop and set dressing and the characters take the focus. The scene with the 3 imperial officers towards the end of episode 4 was great. It feels like a proper well written crime drama that just so happens to be set in space.

Yeah, agreed. I like it so far, and it feels like a legitimate, serious project given enough time in the oven for once. There’s some actual worldbuilding going on, like with the corpos. Skarsgaard is great, Diego Luna is doing well, that brunette with the very ex-bf is cute.

Implied sex scene in Star Wars, is that a first? Nice to see something a bit more mature and real, either way. These feel a lot more like real places where people live than in the other D+ SW projects.

The action set piece payoff in ep 3 was pretty good. Everything was played straight and given appropriate weight, which is my preference over the wacky and overly self-aware formula. Certainly miles ahead of R.R.’s trash fires in Boba Fett.
Is there a reason I lost privileges to post in the rings of power thread? Not sure how else to ask you. I’ve got no reason given to me

Just watched episode 4 and had a discussion with my son about it. This show feels like real people in real life scenes, whereas Boba and Obi Wan felt like actors playing a role. Really, really good.

The music at the last act of episode 3 - chills how they implemented the environmental sound into it.

You've sold me on it. Might wait until it's finished, not because I want to binge it, really like the actor and loved Rogue One, just my internet connection is shit and you have me genuinely curious.

Disney set such a low bar with Obi-Wan.

Show just oozes quality, never thought id say that about star wars, really caught me by surprise this did. Stuck one episode on and was instantly enthralled.

Hope this is a turning point for the franchise.

You guys are just convincing me to hold off as long as possible so I can binge the show and revel in its glory.
As great as this show is, if you can hold off and avoid spoilers it might be worth it. It truly is a movie more than a show - when the credits roll you're left feeling empty knowing you have to wait a week. I wish they released 3 episodes each time.

The ultimate experience is going to be watching both seasons, then Rogue One. I'm one of those people that thought Rogue One was just "ok" - however, if this show continues its quality and doesn't get "Disneyfied" Rogue One is going to be such an incredible capstone for this story.

Edit: Episode 5 promo is straight hype:

This imperial lady in episode four (18:08) just pronounced "ensign" (the rank) phonetically, as "en-sign." Surprised it made it into the edit.

I assumed that's how these goofy brit accents sound the word. They also pronounce lieutenant completely batshit.

I’m convinced that this format is how Star Wars stories were meant to be told. We are super enjoying it.

Not that I’m aware of. Just the actress pronouncing it phonetically and no one catching it.

I just looked. The british pronunciation is the way she did it.

It's how it's pronounced in English. Brit or not.

Which word are you referring? Left-tenant or en-sine?

Americans don't say either of those. Left-tenant is bad pronunciation, period. En-sine you could make an argument for, though.

Just checked Oxford English Dictionary on the iOS app, and yeah, it is one of the ways to pronounce it in British English apparently. Surprising. Oxford Learner's Dictionary and other web resources didn't list the en-sain variant.

OED:

Andor and that actress are absolved, either way. Carry on!

Left-tenant. It's in history books.

Like it or leave it. It's fact.

If I recall it's literally in the name, leftenant, because in old British military customs (maybe current as well?) the lower-ranking officer walks to the left of their senior.

That's not at all where it comes from. It's a bastardization of the french word with latin origins mixing up letters u and v.

It may be the case, but thats not why they say leftenant. Maybe soldiers would create an excuse to fit the word.

I need another episode like a crack head needs a hit. Rewatching ep3 for like the fourth time and it just struck me Luthen's (Skarsgard) complete lack of fear, or disregard at the prospect of losing his own life juxtaposed to Andor's ruthless attempts to keep those close to him safe. Luthen found his spy - the right spy.

Yeah, how do they get to "LEFT-enant" from Lieu-tenant?

It's worse than the "AL-YOU-mineum" thing, or "SHED-u-all".

Maybe it was all the tea, good thing we dumped it and switched to coffee :p

I gotta admit, the "count to three" scene in Inglorious Basterds was my favorite exploitation of seemingly trivial cultural differences.

Listen here rebel scum.

We say Aluminium because that’s how we spell it. Americans drop the i hence the difference.

I won’t explain or defend the Lieutenant thing, you’re right, it’s dumb as fuck. Most normal English people say it the way it’s spelt. It’s only the inbred elites that say differently.

The dialog is so good! This is the kind of Star Wars that I wanted.

Nitpick that I have to get off my chest: Damn some of the everyday world stuff being portrayed is kind of annoying. "Caf" in the morning, cereal with blue milk, popping pills. Come on get some star warsy goop or inflatable bread or bacta in here will ya.

Just want to add my appreciation for the show. With the crap they have done like Obiwan and Boba this feels like its from a different planet. Love it so far and with every episode it seems to get better.

How is this show so good? Seriously!
This was the first time ever that a Tie Fighter really felt frightening, like the eerie feeling that you get when the aliens pop up in the old Tripods-series on BBC.

The small details, the insights into daily life of different classes, the human interactions - I even feel sorry for Mon Mothma.

Can’t wait for next week.

Thought the same thing!!! When it buzzed them all close with the water spraying everywhere, really awesome stuff!!

Damn, I thought that was dreadful. Last two episodes felt like they were warming up but man, boring as anything.

Glad others are enjoying it though.

My sentiments exactly. Great production, writing, and acting. Smart to release Obiwan before this because it will be hard to follow, especially if it sticks the landing.

Mostly connective tissue and character development this episode. Retroactively in Syril's case (the ex corpo). I really enjoyed the hillside confrontation between all of the spies who clearly don't trust one another.

I am still amazed Disney is giving this show room to breathe and time to develop in meaningful ways. While I have enjoyed their other shows, like say Obi-Wan (let's use that as a prime example since it was the most recent Star Wars show prior to this), it was clear they were leaning towards razzle dazzle, and weren't even bothered if the passage of time was subjective or the sequence of events believable (again, ref. see the final episode of Obi-Wan) - anything to get the episodes out the door while relying upon the nostalgia of the viewers to power through the kind of lazy story telling. This is an entirely different beast.

Continuing to like this a lot. Glad the story is being given time to breathe, which will pay dividends next episode. Good character development that doesn't feel like forced exposition, thanks to playing up the understandable tension between the new comrades, plus the dinner table and car scenes with MM. "Driver, take the expressway." Oof.

Yeah that brief scene of the Tie zooming in over the creek may have been the coolest a Tie Fighter has ever been. Just putting something we have seen a million times in a different perspective can make a huge difference.

Loved the scenes with Karn and his mother. It's little scenes like this, or Mon Mothma with attitude daughter, that make these people seem real.

My favorite scene was the end of ep3 when Andor is being "carried away" by Luthen, but having to leave his loved ones behind. Those loved ones being his adopted mother and brother, who likewise carried him away from his original tribal life before The Empire could kill him. History repeating, but also him realizing who his enemy has always been. The Empire, those bastards.

I never thought I'd see a Star Wars show written, directed, and acted with such care. It gives me hope that Disney might look at the critical acclaim of this show and get a tad more serious with future seasons of their existing shows and new stuff like Ashoka.

Loving this show. After Obi-Wan and Boba, this show is like something from a different plane of existence. It’s just so much better and displays what a difference good writing makes.

Just the scene with the guy talking about his motivations for fighting the Empire and then gives the line “The axe forgets, but the tree remembers.” Is a more powerful, more memorable moment than anything in the entire sequel trilogy.

Almost nothing happened in this last episode and I was still riveted. Wow. Diego is really killing it as well.

Great ending to this 3-episode story arc. This is the Star Wars I remember growing up - Rebels vs Empire. No lightsabers or space magic, before The Force and lightsabers became mundane.

Cassian is becoming one of my favorite SW characters. He's totally believable and understandable. I expected them to fuck up his character in his final scene this episode, but they didn't. He did exactly what his character would do. So goddamn refreshing to see this in SW.

I can't believe the level of restraint being shown by the producers of this show. The escape could have been an orgy of stupidity and random "money shots" - instead it was kept relatively grounded. The money shots felt earned and not out of place.

If Book of Boba Fett got this level of treatment.........
