Android |OT5| The Sonic Cycle

What's considered good idle-time? My phone only loses 1% about every couple hours, and I still find that damn amazing. I haven't owned an iPhone to compare though...

Educate yourself about the dark side for once. Apple has much better policies on background processes.

https://developer.apple.com/library.../BackgroundExecution/BackgroundExecution.html

My bro-in-laws iPad can go many days without losing more than 1 or 2 percent off the battery during idle.

Osiris gone cry in the car

Not a bad idea. My girlfriend might start asking questions if I cry in the house.

iphone has insane idle time and also has insane power management in general. When playing a game like candy crush aka something that isn't graphic intensive the battery barely goes down...like at all.

I know about their background execution policies. I also develop for iOS (just not as often), but I don't pay attention to standby times (iPads) because everything is usually plugged in.

Still not sure how an iPhone 6 compares to Nexus 6 in terms of idle drain though....

Is there a way to stop the screen from turning on when a text message is received on the S6? Shit is starting to become annoying.

So I think the cell standby battery bug is just a reporting issue on the S6. I had HD voice turned off on my AT&T S6 for most of the day and it didn't show up on the battery usage; I then turned it on and within a couple hours it showed as much usage as my almost 2 hours of screen on time, but the battery drain didn't really change from what I could tell.

So I'm in the market for a new phone, and I'm trying to decide between a Sony Z3 and the HTC One M9. I know the latter just released but I was wondering if any of you had any advice or thoughts?

😭😭 this thread is dead.

Are these iPads connected to cell service? Not exactly fair to compare them to phones. In comparison, my Note 4 does not budge one per cent overnight (8 hours) since it automatically goes on airplane mode at night.

Thanks captain obvious. We are just pointing out the fact that hardware aside. IOS is way more battery efficient.

Put a nexus 7 2013 next to an iPad mini in standby. You will get the point.

Reason you chose those phones? The Z3 will probably have next to nothing in support after the recent Lollipop update where the M9 will continue for at least a year+ from now. M9's battery is also shit, but the Z3 UI is shit. Just depends on what you're looking for.

Those are both offered by my carrier, T-Mobile, and both have removable micro sd ports which is something I'd prefer to have.

T-Mobile stopped selling the Z3. And like I said, they will undoubtedly not support it at all. Go with the M9 if they are your only options. Or wait for the G4. Better yet, just wait for the G4. It'll be better in every way sans loudspeaker.

Oh.

Oh.

Okay. I hear it is a lot more smooth, but I'm not sure how I feel about this statement overall.
TouchWiz is not the greatest but let's admit that Stock is a bit overrated. All Android phone UIs are judged by how identical they are to Stock, which I think is a silly benchmark.

Stock looks great, don't get me wrong. But I hate how people bag on UIs like Sony's (which I personally think looks great) because they're not Stock enough.

I'd get the Z3 off contract so I guess I should have specified that I know it has the right frequencies and what not for my network. When should the G4 become available? It is set to be unveiled in 2 weeks if I remember correctly?

Stock Android is a bit overrated, I actually like the new touchwiz. It looks nice and has some nifty features.

It certainly does look nifty, and my subconscious is jealous of some of the features.....

And then I use my Nexus again and remember why I love stock lol.
So damn smooth, beautiful, and simple.

That said, the new TW is definitely in the same league as stock Android now.
TW for power users or Samsung fans.
Stock for newcomers and people who want something that Just Works™.

Umm you do know that you're going to be battling CarrierIQ that uses GPS to you know. Shit drove me insane on my Stock ATT M8.

Yeah I agree with that, my biggest gripe with stock android (and some skins) is the double pull down for toggles. It's dumb, almost as dumb as the left and right pull downs doing different things on Jellybean (or two finger swipe). I much prefer how Samsung does it, one pull down and everything is there, quick toggles and notifications.

Touchwiz uses fucking s-voice as its always listening tech (this can not be modified on the s6) while the home button takes you to google search/google now.

Hold the home button down and you will get a completely different personal assistant than you will waking your phone up with your voice. Touchwiz is still garbage because of bullshit like this.

What happen if you disable s-voice? it's always the first thing I disable with Samsung devices. wait u can't disable it on S6?

You still can disable it but the phone does not allow it to be woken up from a screen off state without s-voice. When the "Ok Google" phrase to wake your device is standard lollipop.

So if you wanna yell at your phone (aka Moto X style) you are stuck with s-voice. In the past you used to be able to swap the home button between s-voice and google search but now google is forcing oems to use google on the home button. Unfortunately samsung is still fighting it with s-voice in other areas of the phone.

Don't understand comments like these, what so shitty about Z3 ui? For example, I find Sony album/gallery apps amongst the best around, very classy and yet works very snappily...

Hmm. Sharp offering UHD 5.5 inch phone screens. Why the hell would I want a such a screen? Seems diminishing returns to me, just getting me slower framerates and even shittier battery life.

Yeah, but there's nothing I can do about that.

I left the custom ROM game years ago. I can't buy an unlocked S6.

I agree it's bullshit, but I'm not going to get a phone I don't want just to avoid it.

I haven't experienced much else other than Stock in entirety, so I'm a poor judger of it anyway. Most I've touched aside from that is Sense on a friends M8, and TouchWiz on an S3/4 which is probably destroyed by the S6/S6E capabilities.

I think the comparison to Stock isn't, "which is most like Stock that I can deal with and most similar to true Android,"but, "is it as minimalistic an experience as Stock?" That's my take, anyway. All I really see is people complain about bloatware from other UIs more than anything else.

IMO they should work towards developing 120hz mobile screens. QHD is more than enough for phone screens..

edit: oh, nexus 6 listens for Ok Google in sleep? I didn't know that.

shameful move by Samsung there

Newcomers would prefer TW for the wealth of built-in features which require you to pay for apps to get the equivalent on stock. Also TW generally is the one that Just Works™, unlike stock where you get random battery drains of unknown origin and also memory leak bug in stock Lollipop which OEMs fixed in their skinned versions. Also on TW alarms work through Silent, lol

I don't have a Nexus 6 but yeah this was new with lollipop. Google stole it straight from Moto but its native so its super fast.

The good news is the always listening has to be setup in the settings menu before you use it. The google search wizard pops up asking you if you want in at first long press of the home button.

So in other words no one is going to know their s6 has always listening or s-voice for that matter and will probably just use the home button. Seems like one last weak attempt by Samsung. They should just stick to s-voice with their TVs and such going forward. Ars Technica did plenty of bitching about this in their s6 review if you want to read about it.

I see we are back to the Stock/TW discussion. Which just means we're on a page.

Fixed.

For what it's worth, the Wiz hasn't gotten in my way yet (I'm coming from Nexus 4 -> Nexus 5 -> S6 upgrade cycle).

The most annoying thing (so far) is that you can't swipe between tabs in the Clock app.

Changing the system font to Robot Light has made this phone much more nice to use than I thought a simple font change would.

My Nexus 6 still can't make it through a hard day. All I want is a phone that doesn't cause battery anxiety. Just one day of hard use. That's all I want. After like a decade of modern smart phones, come on.

There are plenty of phones with the battery life you desire, but you dismiss all of them out of hand. The problem here isn't with phones I'm afraid.

I found the Sony UI fine for 4.x. It's not changed much for Lollipop though and it's getting in the way of the UI improvements made.
