Anyone still think Gamespot DOESN'T have an anti MS agenda?

Despite Xbox Next no-show, CES builds buzz

Despite a disappointing, next-gen-console-free keynote by Bill Gates, some major players think the annual electronics expo is becoming increasingly important to the game industry.

See it » LAS VEGAS--The Bill Gates keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show. It's a Las Vegas tradition that has, on occasion, yielded major news for gamers. In 2001, the Microsoft boss used the forum to show the world Microsoft's first game console, the Xbox. This year anticipation was running just as high, with widespread speculation that Gates would use the event to unveil the successor to the console, most commonly called the Xbox Next. Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro helped fuel the excitement last night as he introduced Gates, calling his keynote "the scene of Xbox's launch."

But, alas, there was no Xbox Next unveiling. Although he made mention of the next-generation console in a recent interview with News.com, Gates used the forum to again present the Microsoft corporate agenda to the reporters, analysts, and exhibitors who packed the plush Hilton Hotel Theater. There was plenty of news, but little of it revolved around gaming. Apart from announcing Halo 2 had sold 6.3 million units and a couple of Xbox-related throwaway lines such as "gaming is becoming more of a social thing," Gates spent less than ten minutes of his two-hour keynote with his game face on.

He called Xbox sales in 2004's final months significant," yet conceded Sony presented "very challenging competition." NPD hardware sales numbers (due next week, according to analysts) will likely show Gates' humility was unwarranted. One analyst, speaking off the record, said the Xbox tore out a large chunk of the PlayStation 2's market share over the 2004 holidays, thanks to the Halo 2 phenomenon and the shortage of the new, slimmed-down PS2s.

Gates said Microsoft would build out the capabilities of Xbox Live and would soon announce an application (or applications) to allow gamers to integrate their own photos and music clips into their games.

The only actual game on display was a brief (and technically flawed) Forza Motorsport demo which featured head-to-head competition between Gates and keynote host Conan O'Brien, who was the singular highlight of the evening.

But that didn't mean gaming didn't have a place at CES. In fact, the game industry showed up in numbers greater than in recent years, and with some interesting agendas of its own.

The Digital Hollywood-produced Game Power Showcase and Forum, a one-day event that covered topics as diverse as The History of Games, and Casual and Downloadable Games, attracted a record crowd. In recent years, this pre-show event drew poorly, rarely filling the conference rooms in the North Hall to even 50 percent capacity. This year, almost all sessions drew large numbers, with some sessions packing standing-room only crowds into the two rooms that housed the two-track, two-session event.

Cody Alexander, an agent with William Morris Consulting (a division of the William Morris Agency), was a speaker on the program's Games and Hollywood session. Alexander has attended the past four CES events, but this was the first year he allocated time to speak on a Digital Hollywood session. "I was pleasantly surprised" at the turnout, Alexander told GameSpot.

While he views the average CES attendee as one who is "not as savvy or knowledgeable" about the game industry as a typical E3 attendee might be, his comments suggest a reason for the sudden interest in games. "People in the hardware and consumer electronics business see videogames as the next pipeline," he said. From Alexander's perspective, attending CES "is a good way to detect what's going on in the game industry."

Even some in the traditional game space are suddenly viewing CES with renewed interest. Los Angeles-based Square Enix USA brought 10 staffers to the show, an unprecedented number. In this instance, the decision relates to Square's forward-thinking philosophy of gaming and game platforms. "Traditionally, we have been focused on the game console," Square Enix USA president and COO Ichiro Otobe told GameSpot. "That has been our playing field. But now we are focused on networked and connected devices." Addressing the Square Enix view that consoles and handhelds are losing their position as the sole means by which games enter the consumer marketplace, Otobe said. "This show represents our next playing field."

He is not alone. An unusually high number of high-level industry players could be seen in both the audience and among the speaker's ranks in yesterday's conference. Executive producer Warren Wall of Electronic Arts, Ubisoft vice president of publishing Jay Cohen, Xfire founder Mike Cassidy, Firaxis founder Jeff Briggs, Xbox Live general manager Cam Ferroni, Nielsen executive Michael Dowling, general manager of Nokia's games business unit Nada Usina, and Jason Hall, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, were among those participating in the conference. And industry analysts were out in force as well: Michael Goodman of The Yankee Group, Schelley Olhava of IDC, American Technologies' PJ McNealy, and Colin Sebastian of investment banking firm Thomas Weisel Partners were all spotted in the busy conference crowd.

Of course, packed crowds at a one-day conference does not provide conclusive evidence that CES has greater traction with the game industry. One top executive shrugged off his company's presence, saying, "CES is just another stop on the map."--which gives the show about as much stature as a quickie mart on the New Jersey turnpike, stopped at to refuel the car and load up on carbs.

So while the jury may still be out on the show's significance, some have already made up their mind: CES matters. "We are looking at CES very seriously, but I don't think this [view] is shared by other game companies," Otobe said.

However, Otobe offered hope that one day, CES might offer even more compelling reasons to make the show a permanent, and serious, "stop on the map" for the game industry. Dropping a vague hint of what's to come, Otobe said, "This year we are attending just as observers. Next year, we hope to offer something more."

They excluded any mention of the embarassingly horrible Forza demonstration.....and that is an anti-Microsoft agenda? If they hated MS, don't you think they would mention Conan's lukewarm reception or the many technical failures and hiccups in their presentation?

So I guess 1up.com is anti-MS too since they were disappointed with no Xbox 2 news?

Also, include mega rolleyes. You better run while you can junior idot

Where is the anti-Microsoft message here? I don't see it. There was some rumors that suggested that Xbox Next would appear at CES and this just seems to confirm that it wasn't there, and that MS was focusing on other areas rather then gaming. E3 will surely be a different story.

Xbox2 unveiling was expected, people were disappointed when it didn't happen. End of story. This article could have been about 10 times more critical considering the pathetic floundering that happened onstage.

Sony never said that they were going to announce a PSP price at CES, and Gamespot still said the lack of an announcement was disappointing.

My God, the article says Xbox tore a chunk out of PS2 dominance, YOU CAN JUST FEEL THE HATE AGAINST ALL THINGS MICROSOFT. SCREW YOU GS, SCREW YOUR BIASED HATERADE WAYS!

I dont get it Title Monkey, what do you mean? All I see is people looking forward to information on Xbox2 dissappointed that has not arrived yet.

I guess GamesIndustry.biz has an anti-MS agenda too as this weeks weekly update isn't exactly positive about the MS CES presentation either. Great job junior MEMBER.

You know, if you're gonna make a thread like this, it'd be better if you make your arguments in the first post rather than copy and paste an entire article. Idot.

Where's the dissapointed impressions of the PSP convention? I don't see it, do you? They act like MS promised to unveil info because the presenter mentioned "Xbox" along with 20 other MS products when Gates was brought out.

"Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro helped fuel the excitement last night as he introduced Gates, calling his keynote "the scene of Xbox's launch."

How is that even relevant to the fact that MS stated a number of times before the conevention that there would be no Xbox2 info?

Developers at CES come away impressed with PSP
Game developers impressed with PSP production units, aim to create games that highlight portable usage.

LAS VEGAS--Sony's sleek new portable has captivated consumer interest with its high resolution LCD screen and multimedia capabilities, but the PSP has also impressed developers creating games for the new system.

------

Is this Sony PR or Gamespot news? I don't see a big blaring headline mentioning disapointement of no date or price point. Junior member my ass, I run this place.

The things that were disappointing about the CES presention of the PSP were that no details were given... so what does the Gamespot review of the CES presentation of the PSP say?

For starters it's called Few PSP details emerge at CES

That's not exactly a positive title.

Then it goes on to say:

Unfortunately, anyone wanting concrete details about the US PSP launch was disappointed by today's presentation. After announcing that Sony had shipped 510,000 units of the portable in Japan by the end of December, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Kaz Hirai said the company will "most likely release the PSP in late March 2005" in North America. The announcement is nothing new, since Sony has always maintained that the PSP would launch during the first quarter of 2005.

Hirai's vague launch-date comment echoes statements made earlier in the day by Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi. Speaking to a group of business executives in Tokyo, Kutagari said the launch date for Sony's portable "will probably be March," according to Reuters. Kutaragi also said that Sony "would like to launch in Europe during March as well" but would not give any concrete dates for either launch.

So please Gamespot mentioned all the bad parts of the PSP showing as well.

EDIT

Paranoid AND arrogant... This could prove interesting... :D

All of these gaming media outlets sent people to CES... the flights and the hotels aren't free you know. All of these writers have to file SOMETHING for their time at the show, even though the Xbox2 didn't show and there was no big PSP announcements.

I have an anti MS agenda. :)

Fucking BS that I have to patch IE security hole when I never use the damn thing.

I fear Windows Media Centre in HDTV. While streaming over SMB to your HDTV is a great idea, I do not trust MS software at all. I certainly do not trust it enough to have WMC in my recorder and set programs with a cell phone. Hackers and phreakers will be all over that.

Fuck Xbox and its broken games, fuck MS, and fuck their hostel takeover of the entertainment world with mediocrity.

Well, maybe not fuck xbox yet.

When did MS say they would show anything Xbox 2 related on the show? Never. This kind of anti hype is a Gamespot trademark.

Stop embarassing yourself, fanboy.

So you're faulting the article for quoting something the guy that introduced Bill Gates said? If anything, the guy introducing him was the one creating false hype since that seems like a pretty misleading - even if it is technically correct I suppose.

I'd respect Gamespot more if they were harder on the Xbox (not anti-Xbox), but, going by certain scores they've awarded overrated properties on the system, they clearly aren't.

Look at the score they gave Fable. Nuff said.

I've always felt Gamespot gave decent all around reviews. THey are consistently lower scoring then other sites, like IGN.

Gamespot rated Fable and KoTORII much higher than I would have. Of the high profile releases they've assessed, I only agree with the scores they doled out for Full Spectrum Warrior (sleep inducing garbage) and Riddick (Best Xbox game there is). I actually think Riddick's 9.3 is too low. If you're going award Halo 2 a 9.4, with its broken online system and tepid single-player component, Riddick deserves AT LEAST that much.

Talk about posters on this forum with issues. Your posts are among the worst. If you know anything about Kasavins history with MS 1st party titles you wouldn't of hit Submit Reply. Fable is a complex game to review. There's so much to like and so much to hate. You can have alot of fun with the game. It's very subjective.

I'm at a complete loss for anything positive to say about Fable. Seriously. From the unconvincing world to the repetitive combat, of which there was zero challenge, the game, stripped of damn near every promise PM made, was as threadbare an action-rpg as you can find.

i don't know if XS+ recently decided he should be a prick, but he's doing a good job of becoming a stand out one in the last few days

There was never any indication for a next-Xbox unveiling at the show. It was the opposite actually, with such a strong focus on the current Xbox last year and holiday, in order for Microsoft to see their momentum through as much as possible. They haven't been planning to talk about the next Xbox until they're ready to come out with the full presentation later in 2005.
