Apple September Event 2017 |OT| A Top-Notch Keynote

Thought I'd ask here: will iPhone 6s prices drop? I'm considering getting one as a present for family but £450 is pretty damn steep. I don't particularly want to go used if I don't have to.

I'm sure it will drop but not by much (or not as much as we would assume) as it's got an actual headphone jack, 2GB ram (right?), and runs smooth relative to the high priced new releases.

Here you can clearly see that you have to point the phone at your face to unlock and that it's not working at weird angles.

That mostly nullifies Applepay for me.

The most common use I have for it is buying coffee and lunch at busy times - I can just reach past people and tap my phone. Getting close and squaring myself with the cardreader slows that all down.

Not getting TouchID working in the screen has kinda ruined this phone for me. What a bummer.

If your buying the iPhone X then it is assumed that you will use Apple Pay with your Apple Watch.

You can still do that. Just look at the phone once to unlock it, it's now in unlocked mode, and then you can reach down and tap the phone exactly like you're used to.

You don't need to do the face scan while the phone is touching the scanner.

Now my kids can unlock my phone pointing it to my face while I am sleeping...great!

Was looking forward to see what they had but now I am not sure...the 8plus looks more attractive to me functionality wise .. give me 8plus with the full screen and a touchid/home button in the back...Will wait for iPhone XI ...

Eyes need to be open.

Well that's a lot better, but does it mean unlocking the phone just always gives you a small time window for payments? Or do you have to unlock the phone, open the wallet app while looking at the phone, and then pay?

Just like now you can pre-authorize the phone payment by double pressing the home button, and keeping the thumb there until the screen says "Hold Near Reader to Pay". When it says that, until the screen shuts off, you don't have to keep the finger there while paying anymore. You can then hold the phone however you want, and touch the payment reader.

My wife wants the Apple Watch and she wants to get the LTE version but i told her The wifi does the same thing the only difference is that the LTE watch you don't need to carry your iPhone with you. Am i right or wrong?

No need to open the wallet app.

From sleep mode you'll double tap the power button, the wallet interface comes up, (Same way it does now if you double tap the home button from sleep mode), you look at the phone which will "unlock" it and ready it to be held on the reader.

Once it's seen your face and unlocked, it doesn't need to maintain that view.

Right, but you're still priming the phone by double-tapping the home button. Is there a similar gesture on the X that doesn't require you navigating the UI?

Ahh, of course, the side button is gaining functionality.

Thanks guys

Same thing. I seriously don't get the LTE in the Watch part at all. I can't imagine anyone not having their iPhone on them when they have an Apple Watch. It would not be a substitute to a phone. I would not be comfortable depending on that Watch for anything phone related.

I have an Apple Watch and really like it and have no idea why it needs its own cell service. Who goes anywhere without their phone? Even running or cycling it’s easy to put in a pocket.

Not for me. For me she gets frustrated because it unlocks, at least twice, while lying almost flat. You see the padlock icon change. She wants to raise it and do her little 'ta-da it unlocked moment" but it keeps happening too soon and she's hammering the side button to lock again repeatedly.

Then final go she tilts the phone away from herself to get it to not unlock until she wants it.

Crap demo, but not indicative of it failing to unlock at weird angles.

Your answer is wrong - it isn't the same thing. The biggest issue with the the Apple Watch is that it is tethered to the iPhone. You can't do most of anything without your phone benig nearby. It's dead without it.

And you can't imagine not having an iPhone? Do you run? Swim? Bike? Go outside? Not everyone wants to carry a brick around. When I step away to the corner store, I don't need my phone but still want to be connected. An LTE watch allows this.

Can they not add TouchID to the back in future versions?
or even into the front screen?

chances are they will do that next year. Apparently either the tech wasn't there yet, or they didn't have enough time to meet their deadline (and it's clear they were already cutting corners considering the X launches almost 2 months after the 8)

Is there any reason why the LTE watches have the red dot on the crown besides just to show people that you have the LTE version?

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned an example of HIPAA rules allowing the Apple Watch to be worn at their workplace (where phones are banned) because it requires a phone for connectivity.

Maybe Apple is concious to situations similar to this, and rather than risking a blanket ban, this allows others to easily identify always-connected Watches?

It seems like the Apple Watch LTE is going to be targeted at athletes and that is it. I genuinely cannot imagine many scenarios where somebody is not going to want to be taking their phone with them except for things like going for a run, swimming, cycling, and the like. Personally speaking, I would get one since it is only $70 more and I can definitely see myself thinking how nice it would be to just carry the watch instead of my phone weighing me down in my pocket when I go for a run.

It ruined all of them, except maybe the Nike one, if you ask me. Every time I see it, I expect it to shoot laser beams. It's such a quirky design detail

Some watches have a bit of color on the side of the crown. Like Tudor's Black Bay models. For Cartier it's a trademark almost.

Not really - still has a home button. It will be like the current iOS 11 beta on a 7.

Doesn't exist like it doesn't exist in the 6/7. Plus exclusive feature.

Are you talking about the double tap thing where it brings the screen down?
That works fine on my non-Plus 6S.

It's hilarious to me that people are going to be paying like $1200 for watches with that hideous red dot on them. Many of the high-end models don't even have a SKU without LTE.

The demographic which impulse buys phones like this and gives no fuck about the price point would not be seen dead with an Apple Watch or any electronic watch.

Probably pick this up with Vodafone discount, FaceID is a garbage feature and genuine downgrade on all fronts, especially convenience, but this has the 8+ features without the unwieldy size, I rarely use Apple Pay and my 6 is getting long in the tooth.

Again..I'll say it again. I wouldn't depend on that Watch in an emergency situation as a phone device. Depending on Siri and a small ass keyboard sounds awful. Battery life using gps and lte is also going to be nowhere as long as a phone

As others have said you're misinformed about this, I have a 7 and use the feature. I'm sure they'll have come up with something but haven't seen it anywhere (early days obviously).

Really curious as to how long the LTE Watch will last on average.

I seriously doubt it's that. a black plastic sticker would camouflage that enough that no one would notice.

It doesn't have Touch ID because they couldn't figure out how to do it. It's as simple as that. Face recognition is not a good substitute and everyone knows it.
Well, they could have placed it on the back, but that would be a compromise, and Apple doesn't like to signal so obviously that they tried, failed, and had to compromise.

Typically when watches do this, it's around the stem of the crown tunnel, just like Tudor. Some do resort to a jewel-like bolt-on, but it without exception looks pretty gaudy. I though Apple struck a really nice balance with black ceramic plate there, but they had to go and make it weird.

Do you really think there's a world of difference between people that buy $770 phones and $999 phones?

Does the iPhone 8 also have the ability to use faceID? If it doesn't I would call major bullshit and would show it was a stopgap solution because Apple couldn't make Touch work

Installed iOS 11 GM. Love how there’s a com.apple.Music entry permanently stuck in my notification settings after I uninstalled Apple Music app.

Does the iPhone 8 also have the ability to use faceID? If it doesn't I would call major bullshit and would show it was a stopgap solution because Apple could make Touch work
Iphone 8 doesn't have that sensor array at the top that allows faceid to work, so no, it doesn't have the feature.

You're just full of assumptions today aren't you.

It is a more secure substitute. Not everyone knows it's not as good as Touch ID because there's no real world use yet to say either way.

And unless you want to complain about a more expensive iPhone 8 that includes a completely different array of front sensors and neural engine chip to process what they scan, it doesn't have the ability to use Face ID. So no, the fact the iPhone 8 can't use it doesn't show shit.
