Apple September Event 2017 |OT| A Top-Notch Keynote

People are saying the notch is evidence of it being half baked, but with all the face ID tech in the front camera I don't think they could shrink that notch much if they wanted to. It's by far the biggest negative of the device for me though.

They killed the USB-C port on ATV. Does that mean no more sideloading? Or has this been done otherwise before anyway? It's the star of the show for me really lol.

Now I wonder what would happen if your Apple TV stops working due to an update.

I had my Apple TV stop working due to an update and had to connect it to iTunes to my computer in order to restore it.

If they removed the option then it might be similar to what happens to an Apple Watch where you need to send it in to get it fixed.

Developers probably are able to sideload over a network connection?

If we're being that absurdly specific then, you can still enter you're passcode id. Also, if you have any kind of gloves on as part of your costume and touch id wouldn't work either. Come on, people.

With that said, I have ZERO interest in the iPhone X, and I'm still on my OG 6. Maybe I'll get a 7+ or 8+ if a good giftcard deal comes along at Target.

I'm going to pre-order the X since I'm bored with the look of the 8+. Had the 6, and the 7s+ and can't pull the trigger on the same freaking design...with back glass.

But listen, we might be a small minority, but method mascots are a thing. I'm not just a person in a costume bruh. I'm a living character that has the internal structure of a grown ass man. Don't be a specist.

It's just a bad design choice. They should have just made the entire top not screen across the line. Also, the bezels are shockingly thick considering they're big marketing thing is essentially, "It's all screen." I'm a HUGE Apple guy, and the X is a total skip for me.

In most cases, the notch is not great but ignorable IMO. But the fact that it obscures video content is mind-numbingly stupid. They should have come up with some kind of software solution for that.

The outside bezel is whatever to me.

Ugh, this fucking X phone is going to be totally useless on Halloween.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!

Conveniently release it after Halloween and have the next version with Touch ID intact launched or announced before the next one!

i wouldn't mind it at all if they had decided to atleast hide it in fullscreen apps and landscape. I don't get it. The cut-in in the video and the cut-off UI in the game...
I was so set on this and the price would have been okay. But not with the notch problem, negligble improvement on the telephoto and what seemed like half-baked software during the keynote. I'll wait for proper in-depth coverage. Not like it isn't shipping for nearly two months anyway lol

Not impressed by anything today unfortunately. But I wasn't planning on upgrading my iPhone SE anyways, that thing will last me another 2 years easily.

Yeah I'm in similar boat. Only thing that made me think "ooo I could use that" was the wireless charging of the iPhone/watch/AirPods on one mat, but I'd have to upgrade all 3 products, which all still work fine, to do it. Will be nice in a few years to do that though.

Face ID is just dumb, Touch ID is fantastic and I really think you'll see Apple work that technology into the screen when they come out with the 11.

Inductive charging AirPods announced. Can't find anything but they clearly showed some on a charging pad at one point

No mention of it working on from desk angle (without picking up) eh?

I honestly dont' see the appeal of the X with that insane price premium. And I say that as someone who has historically been willing to overpay to have the latest and greatest. The X is just too much money for a phone and not enough benefit. Next year's 8/X hybrid should be awesome though.

Same here.
My 6S is dying though. Do I really want the 8?
Eh, I suppose I have plenty of time to think about it.

Apple Pay now = double tap side button, look at the phone while aiming X at the atm machine.

Lol

You know you don't have to do it all at the exact same time right?

At my desk, using a computer.

lol
oh brother

Yeah, that's my biggest issue with it. They should have walled off that section of the screen for videos and such on a software level.

The camera hump and screen cut out are so far below their usual standards.

Right?

Especailly given the look of the Note 8 (sorry to bring phone wars into this guys but the comparison is fair), I don't understand how they went for this.

A thin bezel at the top is better than the weird cut in the middle.

Not quite a desk but this seems relatively close.

the box it comes in charges the airpods. it sounded like you need to put the airpods into the box and it enables it to be charged on the pad.

I think the problem is how the color changes constantly to give it a full screen feel. It looks quite good when it's black and blends into the bezel. There was a shot of them using the music app and it has a fully black border at the top and it looks much better.

Looking at Engadget hands on, this is definitely not a 1 hand phone. Reaching down with your thumb for menu stuff seems like a pain and risky for a drop.

Is there a way to do reachability on iPhone x?

omg, the first actual reasonable question!

man.. I use that ALL THE DAMN TIME

hope they have a solution.

I remember Phil specifically saying "with the new Airpods case" so maybe they'll sell the case separately?

yes, the new leaked AirPods will have the case available separately (for the OG Airpods). LED charging indicator on the outside, and inductive compatible.

The notch wouldn't bother me if it wasn't for the fact that full screen content is blocked by it.

Checked updates and beta turned into full ios11 it seems. Now how do I get into this talking shit emjoi party? That stuff being released only on x or not for a few days? I don't see it anywhere.

In a lot of ways, convenience is defined by how well a product handles edge cases. TouchID does that better than FaceID. That's really not a debate.

Actually, if we're talking edge cases, there is a debate to be had. Touch ID is unusable if you're wearing gloves, which makes the phone unusable outdoors in winter climates without going through the hassle of removing your gloves. It's also unusable whenever your fingertips or the Touch ID sensor are wet or sticky or excessively dirty, which happens more frequently than you'd think. And that's just for starters.

Touch ID is a great technology, but let's not pretend like it's not got some major edge case failures all its own. Face ID will have some of its own, as well, but until it's actually in the wild and not hypothetically terrible like some are making it out to be, we won't know how severe they are to say that it's not debatable.

I'm interested in new airpods. If there's anything that Apple recently released that I absolutely love, its the Airpods.

Easy as hell to connect with my Mac Book Pro and S7 Edge and just real nice to work out with. Just a complete amazing experience.

So, to answer my own question (as well as some others'), the official Apple site page indicates that to use the new LTE Apple Watch you require an iPhone 6S or above on the same carrier. Meaning you can't buy one without an iPhone and use it as a "phonewatch".

This conference officially had nothing for me then, and I'm sticking with Android; I wasn't expecting it too though. It'll be interesting from a business perspective to watch whether this is $1000 phone play works out for them. At the very least, they did what they had to and released a bezeless model, otherwise the S8 would've completely eaten their lunch, lol.

Galaxy S8+ 3500mah and Note's 3300mah are the direct comparison to an 8+ (size, buddy).
And trust me, it may look like the difference is not much, but 100mah makes a difference (add oled to the mix, too).

I find it interesting that you claim 100mah makes a huge difference, but you say nothing of the android os which makes a bigger difference than those 100mah. Then theres the whole, adding two hours of battery over last years model, which leads me to believe they packed an even bigger battery.

As for taking your word, I've been using android since it first came out. And still do, including the galaxy 2,3,5, and 6.

We don't have to wait that long before someone tests how much crap you can put on your face and still be recognisable by the phone. It does suck if you have an identical twin though, nothing is gonna fix that.

makes a difference =/= makes a huge difference.
And one of the reasons they got 2 extra hours (let's wait and see if this is true, though) is because of the "same" screen. Had they gone with a QHD panel, you bet your ass those 2 hours wouldn't have been mentioned

I think the notch looks sci-fi cool. There's very few scenarios where I can imagine it will feel intrusive visually.

Yeah I love it but remember this phone is physically smaller than the Plus models (closer to regular size) so it should theoretically be a little easier to use. Hopefully control center from the top is fine.

The stores of my carrier are franchised so the owners of the store want nothing to do with "online customers". Stupid, I know.

Damn. Sorry. Not a great day for fans of colorful phones.

yeah i'm surprised they don't just have it always blacked out except for the cellular, wifi, time, etc. like have that stuff in white while the rest of the screen up there is completely black. it would look so nice. they should at least have included a toggle for it in the settings since nothing useful in an app can be shown up there anyways.

IOS 11 still supports upto iPad Mini 2 & iPhone 5s !??

Damn that's really awesome of Apple

I mainly use Android devices but Android pales completely in supporting their older devices compared to Apple :)

I'm in for an 8+, coming from a 6S+ that is in bad shape. I'm gonna need to see Face ID out in the wild for a while before I ever consider moving up to the new design. Maybe in a year or two. The X does look really nice though.

What's the point of FaceID when you have to swipe the screen anyways??? Apple should have stuck the reader on the back and call it a day.

Posts like this is why people call out Apple stans for what they are.

Yes god forbid some of us are ok with a 20x more secure platform and are willing to possibly invest in a stand for our phone to insure it always works as intended.

Oh but how would these desk users unlock their phone without picking it up?
