Apple 'Special Event' on September 7th

I've managed to hold off buying an ipod in the hopes "something better" would come along, but that black one looks slick!

I guess this is as good a time as any to final bite the bullet and buy one.

The mini is not even listed on Apple.com anymore. If the nano was not so freaking cool I'd go bargain hunting for a mini.

Wow. An announcement so big it took out the Engadget servers.

2. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:11 PM ET by Bart
I'm so disappointed that this is the phone Apple is pushing. It would have been a lot more revolutionary if it had SOME of Apple's styling. At the very least it should have a glossy white finish. Or if this even looked half as cool as the RAZR that would be forgivable. But this looks like a boring phone with iTunes in it.

Man, that phone sucks. It's a shuffle with a phone attached...

4. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:15 PM ET by Port80
wow this is a joke ... LOL we waited so long for this crap ...
w800i all the way!

5. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:16 PM ET by Devo
Christ that sucks. What the hell? I've got money sitting here waiting to buy this thing and they turn out this ugly POS? WTF?

6. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:17 PM ET by Nick
Maybe this will blow the myth that Apple is always first or always does things better. How is this any better than a Walkman phone? Or an N91?

7. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:17 PM ET by Pedro
Does anyone know when Cingular will release this phone?

8. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:19 PM ET by alexm
details already online at www.cingular.com

9. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:20 PM ET by baglunch
i saw the ipod-nano and got excited thinking it was the itunes phone. meh

10. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:20 PM ET by heema
First Apple product that doesn't excite me at all. The design is pathetic. Nothing cool about it. It is simply bad.

11. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:21 PM ET by Grandpa
Why can't Microsoft market worth a damn? They've had devices for over a year that sweep the floor with this pathetic Apple effort. Apple even paired with Motorola which is the least regarded player in the Smartphone market.

12. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:22 PM ET by jxj
Apple didn't make this phone. Motorola did. Apple only licensed Motorola to use iTunes. See class it wasn't that hard now was it?

13. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:22 PM ET by Richard
It's tri-bad?!?! At least they took out 900 instead of 850 so it'll work well in the states. But don't say it's a world phone when it's not quad-band. Don't tell me you can't make a quad-band antenna moto, your overhyped waif (RAZR) has one.
Same complaint extends to the Walkman W800 phone (which is 900/1800/1900), which btw, this thing is NOT better then save for itunes integration (which I don't care about).

14. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:23 PM ET by gerald`
I think it's the first of many, and that the next RAZR (V3i?) will have more memory and probably iTunes support.

15. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:24 PM ET by Dignan17
I'm sorry, Ryan. I don't see why you're so excited about this phone all the time. It certainly isn't "the biggest device launch since the PSP," although you were right that I'd argue about that :) The PSP was far bigger news. How many phones can play MP3s? The market is far larger than portable gaming. This thing doesn't even have removeable memory, does it? 100 songs is pretty bad considering the other options. So tell me, how is this a bigger announcement than SE's walkman phone? It would seem to me that that phone has more functionality, and at least tried to look nice/different.

This is a poor effort. But even if it weren't, I still must ask why this device is needed, or at least why it is getting Engadget so stirred up. This is probably the least exciting "big announcement" I've seen you guys post this year.

16. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:24 PM ET by MacMan
Beautiful. Gorgeous simplistic design. I knew Apple could do it. I'm probably going to buy a second one as backup. I'm sure Nokia, Samsung, Microsoft and the rest are just crying when they see this. All my friends will buy one too.

17. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:24 PM ET by alex
Wow. that phone SUCKS.

18. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:25 PM ET by PauldG
said it b4, say it again: recycled moto garbage

the phone is already available on the cingular website!

20. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:28 PM ET by Matt
Um, it's not an Apple phone. It's Motorola.

The "myth" of Apple is unaffected.

21. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:29 PM ET by Matt
It does suck, though.

22. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:30 PM ET by Nate
I've been waiting for an Apple phone because I knew it would have a superior interface. Now it shows up with the worst interface in the business - Motorola's godawful operating system. Next....

23. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:31 PM ET by djSyndrome
Apple didn't design the phone, Motorola did. All of you whiners saying this is an 'Apple' product should get over yourselves. Apple likely provided software to Moto for accessing iTunes songs, and that's about it.

The interface looks just like my V551. Which, of course, Apple had no hand in designing.

24. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:31 PM ET by Jordan Merrick
not particularly impressive. i've owned a few moto's, even the e1000 that this is probably loosely based around, and it wasn't impressive.

anyone notice the complete lack of apple branding on the phone, and on the makemedance.com site? Plenty of mention of Cingular, but the only hint that Apple has anything to do with this is that iTunes is written on the page. No mention of Apple, or even a logo.

25. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:32 PM ET by is
I could superglue my shitty nokia 8210 to the back of a ipod mini and it would be a better way for apple to have don what should have been the biggest selling gadget since the tv.

Where is the proper ipod phone, with a hard drive and clickwheel, that is black with a white rim like the pics we saw from motonow (which matched the concept design pics for the iphone). THAT WAS WHAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE.

Im totally gutted, almost disgusted with what this has turned out to be.

26. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:32 PM ET by King
so basically a L series with music playback, no expansion, tied with iTune.

i will go with sony or nokia.

so very disappointing.

27. Posted Sep 7, 2005, 2:34 PM ET by MrFloppy
This is so ugly ¬_¬
I expected somethin better fom Apple.

Well, maybe I'm angry because I really wanted some kind of iPod Video with iTunes Video Store.

Couple questions:

-What's the read/write speed of the flash memory
-Can you view regular photos on it
-Is there anyway to get your songs on there without iTunes
-Is there anyway to use it as a UMS

It's a shame that half of those people don't seem to realize that this is a Motorola phone, not an Apple phone. It just happens to be the first 3rd-party product that can basically behave like an iPod.

Damn!!

indexcompare20050907.jpg

also not announced but it seems to be the case, Quicktime 7 for Windows is now officially released. Separate download or included with iTunes 5.

I've never been that impressed with the iPods of Apple, their Macs have been more impressive IMO, but goddamn!

IPOD NANO SEXY GET!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D The size is almost perfect for someone like me. I like it flat and small. Just perfect. Zomgosh11

you know, sitting here looking at my new 60GB ipod, I'm jealous as hell.. would I give up my 60GB of space? Not on your life. Is the "wife" getting a nano for christmas that "she can use". YUP!! :D

The sad part is I would have to get two because she probably really would use it. :(

Apple should of made a deal with Sony Ericsson, and just re-release this phone with more internal memory and iTunes built in.

They've reportedly been trying to sell this to a ton of mobile companies without much success for quite a while now.

$250 for the complete harry potter collection and $550 for the collection plus 20GB Harry Potter iPod... ouch.

I am a sucker... I can't help myself. Impressions when it arrives next week!

that motorola phone is ugly. The only thing it has going for it is compatibility with itunes and itunes purchased music.

You have good mp3 players on other devices that play most stuff - Nokia phones play mp3, m4a etc, with similar navigation.

If it'd had the click wheel I *might* have understood the point, but its obviously just a phone with some software in. Poor show, Moto.

now the nano is nice :)

Is there anything REALLY new in iTunes? Anything worth the 4.9 -> 5? Cosmetic differences (and the not-so-random shuffle) aside I'm not really seeing it. Wonder if they added a lot of stuff under the hood...

I think VBR AAC encoding is new to iTunes.
well I'll be damned... VBR AAC. No HE though (though it doesn't really matter unless you go below 128Kbps)

now the question is whether it produces gapless yet or not.

I dont understand......

Sony Ericsson W800 comes with 512MB of storage, and you can put in 2GB more.
It has a 2Mpixel camera with autofocus, and an optional flash.

actually everything is what the Apple phone should have been.
This is like releasing Fifa 2001, with a 2005-sticker over it..

>> iPod Nano

ohhhhhhh my. This is somewhat something I've been waiting for. Just gotta wait a little longer for them to bump up the size and lower the price. fucking hot though.

Yeah, the W800 just completely owns the ROKR. Better camera, better storage method (microSD? come on...), hell, even a better looking phone. iTunes support is cool, but no so cool as to overlook every other feature available.

Now if only SE would make a CDMA version. -_-;

yeah.. I was really hoping we would see a big discount on them being they aren't manufacturing and shipping 20 CDs..

:(

They are, but that's why I loved subscribing to Audible. $15 got me 1 audiobook and 1 monthly periodical every month! That was awesome. Then I built up a huge backlog and now I'm just listening to stuff I've had for months.

all they did was take the negative feedback from the shuffle and the success of the regular ipod and created the hottest mp3 player on the market. small, flash based, color screen, longer battery life, and ipod branded

The one thing it doesn't have, though, is an AM/FM Radio. If it had one, it would be the complete device. Its too dangerously small for me. Too easy to misplace or have broken from it being packed wrecklessly in luggage or a backpack.

truffleshuffle83 said:
its better that we think the mini never existed, it sucked. for $50 more you coulda got a 20 gig color screen version. im anxiously awaiting my nano

The mini is actually quite nice. My wife got the pink one and thinks it's perfect. Flash wasn't as cheap back then ;)

iTunes5 and nano also do lyrics now. This is a killer for me. God I hope the new photo firmware comes out soon.

I tested it out with a few M4A's I already added lyrics to and they show up on a different tab under Get Info. MacWorld is reporting you can view the lyrics on the nano. The lyrics screen is another selection in the now playing setup. Now Playing->scrub->album art->lyrics->rating->now playing.

The Nano does look pretty cool, but after two years of carrying around 12+ gigs of music (small compared to many people, I know), it would just be too hard to downgrade. The first 20GB flash player is mine, though - now I just have to wait for it.

My brother has been considering MP3 players and was apparently about to go with some Sony model. Consideration of the Nano now has put that on hold.

Holy crap! Lyrics! I never understand anything anyone says in songs. Now I won't have to live such a shallow life, enjoying songs only for their music.

also now under individual song options are two new options:

Remember playback position
Skip when shuffling

assuming these are for podcasts and audiobooks. wonder if these settings are transferred over to the new firmware as well.
