A hogwarts iPod. It might be cool if it came with a faceplate or a lightning bolt or Hogwarts colours. Like a Gryffyndor scarlett and gold/Slytherin green and silver. White and silver with a laser engraving seems a little too meh for the price. Casual fans have been priced out.

Blah, where is our update to the main iPod line, Jobs?

Sure, the black one is sexy, but now we're getting less storage space for the same price. That's not what I would call something groundbreaking like the iPod was. The size is appreciated, and if I was looking for something in the 2-4GB range, Nano would be it. But my music collection just doesn't work with that.

That stupid phone isn't even worth mentioning.

Oh well, at least this means when a new iPod is announced it has a chance of coming standard in black.

Someone help me... I'm seriously thinking of buying a good 3-5 of them to horde on to till Christmas.

Winner is me?!??!!! :*(

in theory you are only losing 2GB total space across the line. And arguably at that level size shouldn't be much of a big deal. if you have more than 1000 songs you probably have more than 1500 as well.

IMHO the nano is targetted perfectly. A lot more than just a 512/1000MB player, yet nowhere near as large and bulky as a hard drive unit. Not much to complain about the unit. Sure you can complain about 2GB less storage, but f you were looking at the mini or similar players, those 2GB probably aren't going to be a deciding factor.

"we include a top-of-the-line 512mb microSD, but you can't use it all for music!"

I'm just shaking my head at their arbitrary decisions.
I don't think it's arbitrary at all.

In doing this, the ROKR phone is either:

1. Someone's "second iPod"
2. A stepping stone to the "true iPod" line

It's a good business move, especially since they will make far less per phone than per iPod.

I think the 100 song cap was Apple building in an insurance incase micro-SD prices dropped enough for Motorola to start sticking bigger cards in them in the future making the iPods look less attractive.

I don't think Apple were that keen on the whole phone thing at all really. Without over-the-air access to the Music Store it's not that big a deal. When 3G has caught on more maybe they'll make a proper attempt at it.

At least upgrade the main line headphones. I would get the lanyard/headphones for the nano but they look like the stock iPod buds on a lanyard. Dammit Apple get a better headphone deal.

.hacked how many mp3 players do you need. or do you just like to flaunt the fact that you spend money frivolously

instead of buying anime or multiple mp3's and crappy caddy's, splurge and buy a aston martin or bently gt. something that isnt common or not affordable by most people. impress us

it actually makes more sense to me, because when you're holding it in your hand the headphone cord is down and towards you, not arching up and away from you.

It just means that when you put it in its case you put it in screen first (which means you don't have to flip it around when you pull it out either.

Well at that thickness there was no way it was going at the top behind the screen.

And for something that's in your pocket or round your neck it doesn't really matter. In fact for the way you hold it in your hand it's actually better.

I agree. Im seriously looking at a mp3 player at the minute but so few seem to have gapless playback and high capacity and this is really holding me back from buying any.

Anyone else think iTunes looks even worse than it did? (PCversion if its diffent in looks from the Mac)

I'd give it 5/6 months for some new players to pop up with gapless.

Yeah...it's kind of blocky and boring. Still, it's nothing major and I'll get used to it eventually.

Didn't like it at first, but after an hour I've already adjusted to it. I like the longer progress bar, more prominent song title display (always displayed, rather than scrolling it), and more overall space for the main window.

Not too impressed with the updates personally as far as there being anything enticing to me, but I am impressed with the slew of updates -- let's not forget the Quicktime update, which is likely tied into the iTunes 5.0 update. Regarding the latter, it's improved both in GUI and in functionality. There's an improved Search feature that taps into Spotlight, nested playlist folders, increased program real estate by eliminating the hefty dividers, ACC VBR, Parental Controls, Motorola phone support, a number of Preferences changes (Importing and Burning are now under Advanced), slighty GUI changes to the iTMS, and so on. On the whole, it's a pretty big jump, but nothing groundbreaking. I think they need to get around to some of those smaller fixes like gapless playback and some GUI tweaks, but I'm quite liking it.

The iPod Nano and co. aren't my cup of tea as I'm still waiting for the full fledged high-end iPod updates.

Please tell me something. Does Ipod Nano has a radio tuner or Apple will have -1 sales once again?

No tuner.

I'm a huge apple fan but I'm really dissapointed with the nano. $199 for 2GB? WTF? Glad I got my mini last month. I thought I would feel ripped off if they released a new one so soon after I got mine, but I prefer the mini in just about every way - price, design, etc. If they added a color screen to the mini it would have been perfect.

And WTH is up with iTunes 5. The top part is ugly :( They moved the volume slider to the right of the skip/pause buttons and it looks really cluttered. I like the new look of the "Source" column and the spotlight-esque search (is that in the windows version, or does it actually use spotlight?)

FM AM tuner will be made trust me on this. And if you guys buy this nano you might get something a lot nicer down the road in the same form factor.

Can I download the press conference somewhere? I saw the Mac mini one and it was pretty cool, I wanna see this one too!

like I said earlier, the nano IMHO is better than the mini, even with the reduced capacity.

this type of MP3 player is targetting a specific individual.. someone who wants a lot of tunes on a player, but not anywhere near their whole collection. most likely this person wants something small and convenient, that takes up no space whatsoever. In that respect the mini failed. The mini was only slightly smaller than the ipod. It's kind of like "Get a unit that is only 80% the size and 20% the capacity." Obviously that is what people wanted, but I really have a feeling that this goes one step further in the right direction. People didn't want mini's because of their capacity but because because they were smaller and still hold a ton of songs. This is even smaller yet, and can still hold a ton of songs (largest can hold the same amount as the smallest mini).

and let's not gloss over that these are still the largest capacity flash players BY FAR.

and admit it. when you stick this thing next to most of the players on the shelf at best buy, it will stick out big time oozing style.

Apple sales -1. But I'm dying to know, what the hell do you guys listen to on the radio that makes the lack of a tuner so contemptible? Everytime I tune in to the radio I regret it; maybe it's just the city I'm in or something.

Just wanted some tech info regarding Mac updates(seeing as Quicktime 7.0.2 and iTunes5 were also released as well).

I know about combo updates and point releases for MacOS in taht you need to get each point release, or the combo if you're missing some. But what about applications such as iPhoto (5.0.1-5.0.4) and Quicktime?

Are teh packages I get actually 'combo' updaters? Can I use the package I downloaded from upgrading 7.0.1 to 7.0.2 on a 7.0.0? Do all point release for applications include all the updates for the previous ones?

On that note, I'm still undecided about the look of iTunes5 - for the most part, I think it's really good, but it's inconsistent witht eh rest of MacOSX - I don't mind the disappearance of the brushed metal (that look is slowly getting old hat), but the squared corners of the window is really quite different for Apple.

NPR, but that's about it.

Sports or sometimes because I'm out all day I wanna hear some news. Plus it really pisses me off that Apple is so cheap that they can't put a god damn radio tuner in there and you have to buy a 40-50 euros add-on. I'll buy the Creative zen nano although it's only 1 GB (but way cheaper and has a radio tuner).

Sorry it only has FM, not AM. Most of the mp3 players that offer radio only offer FM.

FM radio is garbage, aside from the occasional morning show (i find stern and kevin and bean entertaining from time to time). If they're not playing the same fucking songs over and over, then they are on 10 minute commercial breaks.

+1 to don't care much about radio tuners. I drive to work (gave up on riding the back 15 miles each way) and listen to the only radio I care about there (morning talk shows)

the rest of the time it's all about the music in which case FM is about the worst thing out there in music today.

Stick a fork in the Mini, it's done.

The Nano is fantastic. People loved the Mini because it was smaller than an iPod, but really it wasn't THAT much smaller... whereas the Nano is.

borghe is right -- the Mini was successful because it hit an audience that either didn't have that many songs or didn't want to carry that many songs (something that Apple is trying to capitalise on further with the Shuffle), and the Nano will only take it further.

I know the old argument: For $50 more than a Mini/Nano, you get a full-sized iPod with five times the capacity. But with the Mini, people never saw it that way. They figured they didn't need the extra space, liked the smaller player, and they save $50.

The phone, however, is crap. It needed a distinctive, RAZR-esque look to stand out -- because it doesn't stand out at all. This is supposed to be some sort of signature, flagship phone, but it looks like a run-of-the-mill Motorola. Also, while it's nice that they're copying (most) of the iPod interface, the menu system alone isn't what made the iPod so easy to use. The wheel was really what made the iPod's UI so innovative, and that's missing from this phone (though to be honest, with a 100 song limit...).

Seeing the size and capabilities of the nano, I'm more than impressed. However, 4GB just isn't enough. I was hoping to see an 8GB mini with a color screen, but the nano does a great job when it comes to that regard. I MIGHT bite at 6GB. Oh, I should just STFU and bite now like I really want to. =/
