I can see Monter Hunter 3 selling upwards of 100k on the 3DS over here, which I would consider a success. I think Monster Hunter 4 could sell double that here in NA.

3DS > PS3
Unless something seriously changed with hardware ASPs (and it's possible!) you can bump my 3DS estimate up over the PS3 and drop the PS3 by a couple and the figures still hold.

Perhaps tomorrow's news cycle will shake something loose.

It would be good to know recent ASPs, but that may be unavailable. After January, the Xbox 360 was definitively out of its holiday pricing window, I think. And the supply of remaining $250 PS3 systems should be gone. And the Wii U may have been getting some retailer discounts?

Total industry crash incoming.

Oh FFS.

Total games spending across all forms of gaming has grown every year since the turn of the century. Digital, free to play like LOL and DOTA and the iOS stuff have more than offset physical declines via NPD.

Only the Wii U and Vita have alarming HW numbers. For an 8+ year old box the 360 is doing incredibly well, and the 3ds is just hitting its stride.

The console industry may not hit 2008 levels again but this "total industry crash" horseshit is just misinformed, misguided nonsense.

WiiU LTD:
There are 8 3rd party games better than Nintendo land (standalone), MH3U should be the next one.

So you're saying MH3U is on its way to outselling Nintendo Land at retail? Nice to hear, but Nintendo Land stand alone numbers must be low as hell.

That doesn't account for the rest of the world.

I could agree that it was cheaper and came out first, but don't see XBLA as a selling point and more derogatory as coming off of PC gaming in 2011 I never understood why I would pay for network services. I never owned a Playstation console or Xbox console beforehand either, only opting for Nintendo consoles.

The controller is better for shooters, but to me its preference as I don't really see that as a major selling point for myself though I do imagine it changing other people's opinions as the DS3 can be seen for smaller hands like mines.

And for much better selling exclusives, the console had to sell itself first and have build up so I wouldn't list that as a reason until the latter half of the gen.

My point is, earlier on given PS3's blunders it makes sense to choose a 360. But why now? Why is it selling greater than the PS3 this late in the generation?

i think the reason 360 is still selling more is because of slim version. added wifi, less noise, very low failure rate plus kinect gives reasons for people to upgrade. i still have my launch ps3 and have no reason to upgrade . while xbox 360 added features as it went down in price ps3 did the opposite. good for early adopters that that they are getting the best hardware option up front but bad in terms of sales as it doesn't get people to upgrade to a newer version.

Sometimes, the world seems okay.

Soul Hackers didn't seem to do all that well, but not particularly horrible, given how niche it is. I'll be interested in seeing how SMTIV does.

Depressing numbers. Next gen can´t come soon enough.
Not when Pokemon is right around the corner. Nintendo's probably banking on that saving the system. Many of my friends who don't own a 3DS are already groaning because they know once Gen 6 comes out they won't be able to resist the temptation and will probably be buying one.

Yeah, just like NSMB2, MK7, Mario Land etc.... right?

Wow at Wii U, Vita and Dragon's Smegma. Wii U's got to be unsalvageable a this point. I wonder what Nintendo's long term plans are.

The Wii U has sold close to 4 million worldwide in exactly 6 months since launch. The system is salvageable from Nintendo's point of view for a few reasons, the first is that they haven't even got started yet releasing games for it themselves....which is what everyone is waiting for to actually buy the system. Nintendo fans who didn't buy at launch are still waiting for something to give them a reason to buy the console. Another reason is that no one clearly knows about the Wii U or what it is right now, which of course is Nintendo's fault 100% and nothing short of a one hundred dollar price drop, having just one SKU and awesome games/content will grab people's attention - and it won't be Wii Sports this time (although I could see them giving Wii Sports 3 a try). Advertising changes are needed extremely bad for people who are not gamers.

Nintendo proved that they can sell nearly 50 million consoles with basically just First Party titles with the Nintendo 64 and if they need to do it again they will give it a shot. The Wii U offers a lot that will make it different enough from the other consoles combined with the First Party games that the system will sell decently to give Nintendo time to better prepare for their next console which will probably be a Tablet/Console hybrid of some sort with a radical change/gimmick to get it out of the gates faster, but killer software would fix that too.

Hooray!

At least Soul Hackers debuted better than EO:IV.

EO4's release date was like 2 days before that tracking period ended though. I guarantee EO4 sold better than Soul Hackers in the same amount of time. Well maybe not guarantee, but I'd say it's pretty likely.

Yeah, just like NSMB2, MK7, Mario Land etc.... right?
Two of those three are outperforming their DS predecessors. The 3DS drop came from the loss of the Touch Generations crowd (to phones and tablets) but crossover and core games actually seem to be doing better on 3DS than they did on DS in general so far.

It really is like the best of DS and PSP rolled into one. No wonder there's no need for another handheld anymore. :)

People saying that 1-3 great games can't spur sales of the Wii U have forgotten about Wii Sports selling millions of Wii's in 2006 (I personally didn't think it was that great though).

I'm not sure if Nintendo is even willing to attempt something like that. It'd likely require a new IP to garner that type of interest, and I don't think Nintendo will make a new IP anytime soon with the exception of obviously niche stuff like Wonderful 101. I don't think they'll even do a brand new Mii based franchise and just stick to the Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Party stuff that was already on the Wii.

A good Wii Sports 3 would probably sell millions if it were released on the Wii even this late in life given proper advertising, but I guarantee you it wont sell people on buying expensive Wii U consoles.

Don't think Nintendo is screwed, but it is really not looking good. Their gonna have to price drop something this fall, so some hard choices to make there. Price drop/hardware revise the 3DS this fall with pokemon or price drop the Wii U.

Still gonna get a Vita next year even though it's dead.

I wonder if Dragons Dogma will pull a Asura's Wrath and stay full price for a long time.

that is sort of a recent thing. pokemon's been very consistent over the course of the last 17 years.

This Pokemon game is also a bad spinoff.

Shouldn't it already have broken 100k?
Wasn't last month 80k?

We were talking about Pokemon X&Y in October.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
At least 3DS is still second and probably more around 110k than 100k, since it's over 100k and over PS3. :p
Still, terrible month for everyone, who expected such low hardware...Fortunately, 3DS is having lots of titles and that will improve the situation, especially starting with Animal Crossing (it'll be huge).
Ah, 3DS software top 10 is good, sales wise. MH3U sold more than 21k in its second month, and it's 9th. And Soul Hackers sold more than that! The first Devil Survivor sold 27k in its first month, fyi. There seems to be quite a good activity in the lower positions, with titles still selling at least over 10k per month (remember February?), compared to last year.

In my estimation, the industry will contract by about what Nintendo's share used to be.

It's not that simple. Safer genre/archetypal/originality yet more expensive to make games. Less games, less sales. Less sales, less publishers and developers. Less publishers and developers, lower market penetration. If you can't see it I would suggest you open our eyes.
