Arma 3 Beta - June 25th - 35 Euros

I've been really getting into this lately, I just wish there was a GAF community that played it. Watching Dslyecksi's videos makes me really want to play more regular Arma missions. I'm still kind of bad at regular Arma (for some reason I'm terrible at spotting enemies and wonder how my fellow AIs can see them through a bush and say "attack that soldier!" with a red target around him.), but I'm getting better at it though. Also I had no idea until yesterday that you can control UAVs by clicking the map. I still can't figure out how to give ascend and descent orders without manual control though.

Some noticeable performance improvements are making its way onto ARMA 3. Also, the second episode is currently on the dev branch.

A new and splendid HDAO post-process effect has been implemented based on a technique by AMD engineer Layla Mah (thanks!). The effect is DirectX 11 only and brings improved visuals and an interesting potential performance boost (1-12% based on settings). Find it on devbranch in the video settings, under AA && PP (AO drop-down). Another example of continued cooperation with various hardware partners for optimizations and new tech, are recent performance improvements to stencil shadows via Intel. There finally is some solid movement on the multiplayer optimization front. Over the past weeks our programmers, David "Dwarden" Foltyn, and several community admins tested the new build quite a bit. They are already reporting significant performance increases, as well as better load-balancing on CPU cores.

Well, i've never played ARMA or ARMA 2 and yesterday i began training with a really experienced group. At first is a bit hard to get oriented and know where i'm supposed to be in relation to my squad but so far i'm having a blast, i like it a lot.

Finally got around to finishing the first campaign, Adapt, really lots of fun, although a bit more explanation wouldn't hurt when it comes to completing certain objectives, got a bit stuck with the Darter UAV; still tons of fun.

If you guys haven't already, check out the mods over at Armaholic.com, really enhance the immersion.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=22150 - JSRS2.0 sound mod, sounds incredible.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=23899 - Blastcore R3 visual effects mod, explosions and tracer rounds look unbelievable.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=18948 - ST HUD fireteam HUD.

ArmA 3 is shaping up to be quite a good game, even runs better than ArmA 2.

Is anyone going to make an OT? Suppose the game is actually full release at this point. First campaign was fun enough although I miss the diverging paths and fallible(not through automatic story reasons) objectives from the first two games.

How is the second campaign mission in terms of length and quality? Going to Atlius so one hopes vehicles are used more.

PM me when they have fixed the cheating aimbot AI.

Also, for the next game.. PLEASE dump this shitty basic engine. The AI is as dumb as always, tell him to enter a car which is 2 meters to his left and it takes him 1 minute because he needs to walk in some stupid pattern to even find the car.
Why doesn't the AI auto heal himself or his comrades, or rearm by himself? (This is available via a MOD.. The same mod was available for ARMA2.. Why haven't the devs themselves implemented this????!!?!?!?!?!?!?)

The constantly having to babysit the AI is getting tiresome now after OFP, ARMA, ARMA 2.

Time for the devs to spend some $$$$ and get all areas up to spec, not just the graphics.
Rainbow Six was a more fun game in SP.

What really needs to go is the Action Menu.

These seem like must have mods. Any others you'd recommend? I'm thinking about re-installing...

People who hate the clunky command menu really need to try Articulate; the voice command module I mentioned earlier. I've tried it yesterday and it works like a dream. The first time I issued a command and my squad was reacting, I was jumping in my chair! It doesn't recognise some context sensitive commands but then again, it's still in development. Using this in battle just streamlines the experience. And it adds quite some 'immersion'.

Dev demonstrating it:

Anyone else having friendly AIs who are not able to listen to any orders? Why can't they hold a formation? They run around without any discipline. It's so annoying that they can't keep up with you. I never had this problem in Operation Flashpoint or Arma 2. Spamming 'Return to formation' doesn't help. They behave like it's always combat so they try to look for cover even though no enemies are around and I set the combat mode to 'Aware' or 'Relax'. Is the combat mode behavior broken?

Jut played through the first campaign and it was great! Started the 2nd one and it seems to improve on everything. Can't wait to dig in some more.

Nah not at the moment, still waiting for ACE though.

I'm still waiting for weapon resting, changing weapons while running and proper ballistics for body armour. Have Bohemia ever stated they'll address these issues?

Looks cool, it'll be very interesting to see what scenarios this will create, looking forward to some cool ShackTack videos too.

Holy crap. If I understand this correctly, this does not create scenarios traditionally, but in real time? This is going to be nuts.

Has anyone noticed a drop in FPS/some sort of new bottleneck with the most recently released build? Whether I set the draw distance to 6k or 1k, AA to 8 or off, textures from Ultra to low, Arma3 seems to hover around the 30fps mark.

I believe that if you put some settings in low, the engine instead of using the GPU to render some assets uses the CPU, which actually worsens performance.

I have a handful , if I can chip in.

TPW MODS - A modset that adds ambient life, a suppression system for you and the AI, and improved line of sight setups for the AI. I do suggest leaving stuff that enhances the core game like TPW LOS and TPW EBS on if you're using single player content, but other stuff like civilians can break the campaign in strange ways. If you're wanting to use this for existing content but to have that be more realistic, use parts of it that do not add in-game assets like boats and cars.

ASR AI - One of the best AI mods for ArmA II also is updated for III. It gives each acting person who is run by AI skill sets based on class and rank. It really deals with the complete idiocy to complete superhuman elements during combat that vanilla AI offers. The AI can also attempt to rearm and toss out smoke when shot at. Really recommended beyond any other AI mod for the series, as it's simple and is easy to add onto other mods.

JTD Flies - A simple addon that adds flies to corpses after they've been dead for a while, to help determine who is dead or injured. I don't think there are any major mods to ArmA III that enable passing out just yet, so this is mostly cosmetic.

Jump MF - You might say jumping in a game based on realism is silly, but this mod simply unlocks a feature Bohemia was planning for the game. It allows you to do little hops while running so long as you have the stamina for it. It's better than coming to a dead stop to do a slow vault if you're trying to get over a fence quickly.

Midrange Terrain Texture Replacement - This replaces some of the weaker textures of the game to a much more detailed one. Really desired if you want visual improvement, and covers both Stratis and Altis.

Tao Folding Map - This is a very handy addon that allows you to access the map in real time like the compass, watch, or GPS. No need to transition to another screen to look at the map.

TMR Module Realism Alternate - Currently the closest mod to be closest to ACE in a general sense, allowing you to rest your weapon on objects, allow more realistic scopes, and more realistic weapon sway. The reason this is called Alternate is due to the person who originally started the mod ceasing working to it, and this is the more up to date version.

All of these mods can work with the mods previously posted. I actually use all of them. The ALPHA and BETA tags are for what phase the of the game these were released towards, but they all still work.

MY LIFE IS COMPLETE

In other news, I've been playing Zeus mode non-stop in the dev branch. Being Zeus is awesome and a bit overwhelming if playing in a big game, esp PVP. Everybody is pinging the shit out of you.

Playing in a Zeus is is fucking awesome. One Zeus game is soooo different from the next. One might be PVE, next one is PVP, and the next one is a mix...One is over the top and the next is tactical.

Soo much fun.

Sooooooo I haven't played since alpha and holy fuck this game looks a LOT better. Super impressive. Changing settings seems to do nothing to performance, though lol

I have been holding off playing the first two episodes to play them in one go. I'm looking forward to it and especially to trying out the A-10 successor.

So what mods have you guys been enjoying so far? I can't wait for Invasion '44 to come out although I suppose it will be quite different now, but I hear there's a decent zombie mod out already?

I took a break from ArmA 3 after being so disappointed with the lack of content so I figured I waited long enough for the campaign to finally be fully released and some decent mods to start coming out. Sad that most of my friends went back to ArmA 2 for the mods though since I think the improvements in ArmA 3 make it hard to back to ArmA 2.

Also, has the performance improved at all with these patches?
