This last episode was really fun. My only minor complaint is I wish there was a little more range in Bruce's emotions.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Fantastic episode, one of the best efforts from the series.

The tourists made me laugh a bit, guess they ran out of American actors? And I didn't expect Amanda to go out like that. I guess nobody is truly safe.

Great episode. I know it what would happen because the title but it was fun xD

It was good to see again to Linda, it was her second actress right?

Now I need some reference to Cheryl. Actually, I find funny that Ruby call once to Ash as 'Ashley', because only Cheryl call him that way.

Maybe I am overthinking, but if there is some connection between Ruby, Cheryl and Anne would be a good plot-twist. Or maybe not, but there is still two episodes to know the truth about her : D

The previous episode really bummed in out, but this one redeemed it.

I'm sorta happy the cop died. I really didn't like her for some reason. It seemed like a forced love interest.

The idea of his hand growing into another evil ash is great. Fits with the trilogy and is the best idea for a main villain - more Bruce is always a good idea.

But again, it seemed to end sooner than I was expecting, even knowing how short these are. Season 2 really needs to be an hour each. It's like they don't really have good ideas for 10 30 minute episodes or something. I could give them lore ideas I've had since I was 10.

Episode 7 was only ok but this weeks episode was fantastic. Loved it and felt a lot more like the "Evil Dead" I know. Also some pretty solid effects and freaky scenes. Super excited for the next two episodes.

Couldn't resist watching but goddamn that was the best post Raimi episode this season! Will post more detailed thoughts tomorrow.

So what would you like? Five full hour episodes or ten 30 minute ones. I wouldn't mind five hour long episodes but I don't think Starz would only be up for only five weeks of AvsED (they need to have people tuning in on a regular basis), and believe me we don't want to see this stretched out to 10 full hours of Evil Dead. You wouldn't have as tightly packed episodes like this. Also as a general rule of thumb for horror, you never want to delve too deep into the lore. Nearly every long running horror franchise out there that has tried to do that suffers in the end. Evil Dead is all about the moment to moment set pieces, not deep character drama. And quite frankly I don't trust these writers enough to tell a drawn out character drama.

Loved this episode in part they finally got rid of an annoying character. I knew what was going to happen with the bird in the beginning, but I still loled at it.

Its 2015. And we just had a damn good piece of television with the real Bruce Campbell doing fucked up things in the Cabin.

I still can't get over this show. It will never win awards or major audiences but goddamn I'm buying it on BluRay and will forever pimp it to my friends. Some of the shots. The music choices and the opening blaring accompaniment.

Bless you all involved. Its fantastic and the true definition of a love letter to the fans

That was probably my favorite one of the season. Evil Ash is a fun addition and I liked seeing all of the hunting traps come to life in the shed.

Also, I didn't expect Amanda to die this season but after the weird turn her character took in last week's episode, I'm okay with it.

Perfect 'return from ban' gif.

Also, poor Amanda.

And my Gosh, Bruce Campbell is a good actor. He had the creepy, rapey presence as Evil Ash, and you could tell good Ash was cracking during the quieter moments in the woodshed.

Amanda dying does bring hope that maybe no one outside of Ash is truly safe. I know she wasn't as important as Pablo or Kelly, but she was still played pretty majorally in the season, so to have her die not even as an end of season thing (there's still two episodes left) and kind of unexpectedly early I take as a good sign.

While the show has been successful and Pablo and Kelly both have been slowly growing on me to the point I actually like them now, I don't want the show to be one of the countless horror shows that's afraid to kill its darlings.

(and yes, the newest episode was great, I look forward to the last two.)

I think we all knew what was in store for
Amanda when she took that abrupt character detour into love interest all of a sudden. She was also the least developed character so she was the easiest to off.
Didn't expect it to happen this soon though.

I guess my only complaint is that
she kicked Ash's ass earlier but Evil Ash is too much for her?

Its a simple thing but I loved that they didn't fuck around getting around to the Cabin after last weeks ending.

I was worried they may have done one more 'on the road' EP. Well worth it. I know some disagree but honestly I don't view any of the episodes as filler so far. I've had a good time with every episode and I didn't think I would at the start of the show

Great episode---but poor Pablo getting blocked like that.

Action and all else was totally on point---not many episodes left for the season, but by all indications they will ride this thing out in the utmost bombastic style.

Well, I mean. One way or another, that is definitely not the last time we're seeing Amanda.
She just may not be alive anymore.

I'm not sure what I like...maybe with their budget they're only telling a small story that they even have to try and spread out over 10 30 minute stores.

But I'm the type of person that doesn't really like what happens on modern shows. They have so much character drama filler that I usually check out early on. I'm just a die-hard Evil Dead fan so I'm fine with seeing Bruce character drama - but yeah, ED isn't really about that. Not sure what I want.

Best Evil Ash yet.

That was a great episode and I was genuinely scared a couple of times. I also have to say I was quite shocked to see how brutal and raw it was, beyond anything this season yet which was somewhere between EDII and AoD in tone.

Well that was one of the few episodes this season that I immediately wanted to watch again. After all the worry from the post Raimi episodes I thought the execution of the first cabin episode was pretty much solid. The moment Ash splatted tweety against the tree and the blood shooting out of the cabin to form the title screen I knew feel of this episode was going to be different than what was before. The out of left field weirdness from Raimi’s movies and the pilot was thankfully back in full force here too, and with the exception of a couple of shots the camera work and visual style was spot on.

As usual, my quick thoughts (SPOILERS):

- Didn’t expect anyone to join with Ash so quickly. Still hoping for some solo Ash in the cabin time at some point.

- So I guess the cabin is now located in Michigan? They were pretty vague about its location so I'll just pretend it's still in my state of Tennessee.

- There was yet another missed opportunity to add the "Join us" voice which has been absent all this season.

- I can't believe how closely they nailed the look of the cabin. It's got the look of Evil Dead 1's cabin with the wounds of Evil Dead 2's. All the little details: the holes in the door from the shotgun blasts; the holes in the walls from the blood geysers; the exact clock, tape recorder, and deer head; even down to the tipped over trash can Ash used to trap his hand in. I still haven't checked but I think I spotted all of Ash's friends clothes hanging from the wall in the hall as well.

- Obviously they're building up to the cellar, but what lurks beneath the door this time?

- I'm still wondering if they're ever going to address how this show interprets Evil Dead 2's ending.

- I was not expecting the return of Linda's head in the vice! This would mark the fourth time Linda's actress has been recasted. Keeping with tradition!

- The attack of the tools put big smile on my face. The flying saw blades are typical haunted horror trope, but the snapping bear trap was a fun visual gag. Glad that they strayed from the usual deadites in this episode.

- While it's a little saddening that we may not have another Ash vs Evil Hand moment, the idea that it just "grew" another body was another unexpected moment. It was a clever way to bring back Evil Ash again. Kind of reminded me when Evil Ash grew out of Ash's shoulder in AoD.

- What Amanda read in Knowby's notes about how the dagger can be used to seal the book makes a hell of a lot of sense. Surprised I never thought of the dagger like that until now.

- I had a hard time telling, but was that Bob Dorian doing the voice of Professor Knowby again?

- I honestly thought Amanda had thicker plot armor than that! She was the first casting announcement and had her own screen time for all of the season. I was expecting her to last at least to the last episode, but not this soon! Now let's see what is to become of the Ghost Beaters.

- Of course, just because Amanda is dead doesn't mean the actress is gone.

- That line and delivery Bruce made after Amanda mentioned that his hand grew another body was so weirdly off.

- At first I was wondering if Bruce was going to play Evil Ash as weird as what he was in AoD, but then the fight happened, the weaknesses were exposed, and all was good.

- Also glad to see the Bruce abuse was back full force in the episode too.

- Even though I had some criticisms with some of his direction in episodes 2 & 3, I applaud Michael Bassett for writing the most Evil Dead-like, post pilot episode yet this season. I don't know if the choices in this episode were his ideas but the weirdness, the unexpectedness, and the mean spiritedness from the films that I have been waiting for this season were all present in this episode. And major props to director, Tony Tilse, his direction was pretty much spot on throughout all the episode (my only quibble was the use of a time lapse and slow motion shot).

- I’m a little disappointed that the clip they showed on the Colbert show a while back happened to be something from last two episodes.

So yeah, all in all this episode hit all the right buttons with me. Sure it plays into fan service, but fan service is never a bad thing when the material uses it naturally with the story and not forced into it for no other reason than a quick wink (ex. the Elm Street remake). Really keeping my fingers crossed that they stick with the cabin throughout the second season. Three episodes of this is not enough!

The episodes don't feel tightly packed though, you get some chatter, then Oh it's a deadit...no it's dead.

Feels more like the episodes have bits axed out of them to fit into 30 minutes.

That was more of a problem with the writing and directing on the previous episodes. I agree, a good chunk of this season has been one generic deadite encounter after another which is unfortunate because the idea of Evil Dead allows for so many creative possibilities. Stretching it out an additional 30 minutes is not going to make that better. TV budgets can only take the action so far, and Ash vs Evil Dead will never be as popular as Game of Thrones or Walking Dead to get that kind of funding.

An example of poor storytelling is with Amanda Fisher. The biggest gripe with her has been her extended subplot with Ruby and her sudden switch to falling for Ash. Had they truncated her time with Ruby and introduced her to the gang maybe an episode or two earlier then this particular issue might've been rectified. Episodes like 5, 6, and 7 were all too similar with their threats when there could have been other ways to express the Evil in those unique environments and use that to evolve the story in a similar fashion.

Now take the newest episode, the best example as to why the 30 minutes works for this series. This was how the previous episodes should have been handled. You have three distinct set pieces happening: Ash in the toolshed; Amanda vs Evil Ash; Ash vs Evil Ash. On top of that you have the cabin tension build up and quick scenes with Pablo and Kelly (and during those short segments we get some character development with Kelly). The scene between Ash and Linda is an example of using the Evil to break down Ash's character and also creatively find a way to get rid of his power glove for a future plot device without the use of a generic deadite. All of these moments are well paced and nothing overstays its welcome. This episode played out as closed to the pacing of the films as a tv show could get, and that’s what it needed to be.

Sadly the realities of stretching an episode like this to an hour, while keeping the same episode count, doesn't mean the budget and shoot time doubles in size. So what you are left with is artificial padding in between. Things like extended conversations between characters (not the show's strong suit), and more time on character subplots we would probably rather not see. Ash definitely has some fun dialogue but that can only be taken so far. As Bruce has said in an interview, with an hour the show turns more into a drama, and do we really want to delve into Ash and the other characters' pasts with needless monologues or have extended scenes where characters wonder around aimlessly (looking at you Walking Dead).

As someone who has only seen the original ED films once, years ago when I was teen on a dodgy, copied VHS (I've watched a slightly better copy of AoD a few more times though) this has to be the freshest thing I've seen on TV in a long while. Marvels netflix series are awesome too though but a little more 'by the numbers'. TWD's aite but so serious all the time. This has LOLs a plenty, well produced action and effects, some creepy horror moments and Bruce mutherfukn Campbell turning back the clock. What more do you need?

Enjoyed every episode but the best so far have to be the 1st and the most recent, though pretty excited for the last two

I'll be honest though, even the weakest AvED episodes I still find highly entertaining. So far there's not an episode I think should be skipped or anything, though as any series some stand-out episodes. I also am curious how the second season may be handled since we know at the very least we're probably getting that.

If I had to tier the episodes personally so far...

-Top Tier Episodes-
-Episode 1: Very strong opening, great mixture of horror/comedy, stand-out scenes, almost all humor hits, some scenes actually creepy, stylistic, compelling to watch.
-Episode 8: First episode back in the cabin, some great atmosphere, fun encounters, some of the wittiest dialogue imo, but also creative set-pieces, maybe the best depiction of Evil Ash so far, fun twists and turns, well-paced and all three side-stories are interesting to watch.

-Good Episodes-
-Episode 2: Some stand-out scenes, ranging from the cat battle, barging into Kelly's house, sitting down and eating dinner, the talk with Ash's neighbors, etc. I think some of the funniest stand-alone jokes are in this episode, and some fun tension. Though I do think the Deadite battle and some of the in-between scenes could of been better.
-Episode 4: I actually really like this episode. I love the scenic beauty of this episode, the roads of New Zealand the the look of the Shaman's Hut. I think the driving scene and Nitro scene are a blast, and them first arriving at the Shaman's Hut. Likewise, Ash's tripping out moment is a stand-out moment for the series for me in some ways, I think it's a mixture of being funny, interesting, and yet developing Ash's history, and maybe one of the best 'trip out' scenes I've seen in media. Pablo and Kelly scenes could be better.
-Episode 6: Also loved this episode, loved the scenes early in with Amanda and Ruby, and loved all the diner scenes. From Ash being sleazy to Pablo and Kelly taking responsibility and some of their wise-cracks (and even their trailer scene with the Necronomicon), and of course the highlight of the episode, the fight scene at the end.

-Ehh Episodes-
-Episode 5: While the Pablo and Kelly scenes are fun, and the Shotgun scene and Pablo walking away from the Shaman's Shack with the firing burning is a great scene, it feels there's so many missed opportunities and failed execution in places. As I said above, the design of the demon is interesting and well-done, but the final fight with him was unfortunately kind of tame and lacking a punch to it. There's still interesting, funny, and entertaining bit, but it left far less of an impact than it felt it should. Few good gags though, such as Ash's tied-up and comments on Kelly possessed and the demon trying to get Ash to kill Kelly.
-Episode 7: Felt the most uneven in terms of quality. For once, I actually thought the Pablo+Kelly stuff wa stronger than the Ash stuff, the Amanda stuff felt kind of forced and even though I kind of liked the Deadite in this episode, it feels he wasn't used to the fullest potential, neither was the Milita. It just felt like some wasted potential in general. This said, there were still some stand-out moments and found it entertaining. Highlight is indeed probably the truck scene with Pablo and Kelly and Pablo's 'dilemma' of figuring out what weapon is his 'identity' weapon.

-Personal Least Favorite-
-Episode 3: I actually like this about the same as I liked episodes 5 & 7 and would still list it as an 'ehhh' episode, but I like it slightly less. I felt the humor was the weakest in this episode and it had some of the most stilted dialogue (still some good jokes, but less so than any of the other episodes). The beginning scene with Ruby, the summoning scene and scene with the demon are all quite good, but the middle of the episode drags on and it felt the writing was the weakest in this episode, in my opinion.

---

But I still have enjoyed every episode, honestly. I haven't really thought any episodes so far have been straight-out bad or terrible, thus far. Even Episode 5 as my least favorite finally accomplished in making me like Pablo and Kelly finally, and I've come to like them more and more in the episodes past 5 as well, as a random example.

And if episode 8 is any sign, it looks like Episode 9 and 10 are going to be a lot of fun.

If you haven't you should watch Bubba Ho-Tep, he has an amazing performance in that movie. Turns what should be a completely ridiculous premise into something surprisingly affecting.

Yeah, that is a very, very good film, mostly due to his rather incredible performance. Highly recommend it.

Also, that little bird thing at the beginning of the last episode was fucking hilarious.

Jesus H Christ-this episode was basically the payoff for everything we imagined when this series was announced. Phenomenal episode!

Sorry to see Amanda go-she's a gorgeous actress.

I'm not thrilled with killing her off, but it upped the stakes and it was effectively handled by everyone....until Campbell failed to sell it and then the tone shifted back to something a bit more wacky. I dunno, it could've been better. (evil ash was pretty good though)

I've gotten more and more disappointed with this series as it went on.
It just feels so lifeless and dull.

The only character that's worth anything is Ash, but they seem to space him out so much, he just doesn't do much in most episodes. Almost as if because Bruce is older now so he won't do much or something. Or maybe he just don't want to do more and since he's a producer on the show he doesn't have to.

All the other characters are just walking paper thin cliches of every tv show tropes ever made. I've actually started skipping ahead when the show only focuses on the side characters. Pablo and Kelly alone are just so cringeworthy.

So many of the situations feel so contrived and artificial, like when
Ash is stuck in the shed for aaaages trying to break the door open with the crowbar,
it just felt so forced and unnatural. It's like they don't have the means to do more so they just have Bruce be stuck in random situations like those as an excuse for him not to battle the dead.

The whole cabin episode was such as let down, hardly anything happened, mostly it was just Bruce standing around,
he didn't even get to fight his hand!
Battling Evil Ash
was a highlight though so at least there was that.

I'm not as down on it as Santar is, still find it entertaining, but after eight episodes in, it's painfully obvious how integral Sam Raimi is to Evil Dead.

I really hope he carves out more time for next season to do more than one episode.

Also, maybe it was just those driving sequences that ruined it for me, but I can't not think that they're in New Zealand.

Late...

That was a fucking awesome episode. Loved the part at the beginning where Ash slams the bird into the tree, lol. Cabin rules as it always does. The meat cleaver to the neck was fucked up. I mean, we've seen so much violence with chainsaws, shotguns, etc from this franchise, but that meat cleaver to the neck just looked so violent to me. Really awesome.

I think I got through episode 5. Boy did this show turn into the worst pos ever.

A ton of ass and shit jokes, really bad acting, a whole bunch of meandering, predictable plot beats, and very poor special effects. There was something off about episode 1 and it just kept getting worse.

How do you go from Evil Dead 2 and Drag Me to Hell to this? Is it the staffing? Is Sam Raimi just less good at hiring a good writing and directing staff than most?

Anyone who has felt similarly, should I keep watching? Does it get better?

I've had my problems with it, but I really loved the first episode. It's easier to accept when you realize that this is on a tv budget and schedule, and is going to be somewhat off compared to its film counterparts. I do think episode 8 (and hopefully the next 2) is what most fans, including me, have been waiting for. Make it through to there and see how you feel then.
