makes good threads.
One more day! So jealous of you folks who are getting to watch this tomorrow night. Funny enough today on my vacation I randomly ran into Evil Ash! Thankfully someone trapped him in a glass tube.

That's pretty cool!

This takes me back to when I was a 17 year old lad in the simpler times of 1998. I was so tired of waiting for Evil Dead 4 to happen that I ended up making a 16-bit rpg based on the series (tentatively named Evil Dead Timeline then to Tales of the Evil Dead). I used the OHRRPGCE (Official Hamster Republic Role Playing Game Construction Engine) to make the game. It was a mixed between turn based, Dragon Quest styled battle system, survival horror moments (you can only save indoors, and may have to run from battles often), and point and click adventure elements.

Story wise this game would've followed its own timeline (pun intended thank you). After Ash drinks the potion he instead wakes back up in the woods where the cabin was (the two AoD endings were among the many dreams he was having during his long sleep). It would have involved Ash needing to find the pages of the book and trying to send the evil back. There would have been time travel involved and the ending idea I had at the time would have Ash being sent so far back in time to the very creation of the book where his very body is used to make it, screaming face, blood for ink and all (at the time I thought it would've been darkly humorous to have Ash reading from the same book which was made from him the whole time).

I got as far as releasing a demo of the game (called Evil Dead Timeline Take 2) and was working on the final version until a fatal computer crash and I never picked back up since. There's still download files floating out there on the internet, but the game itself runs pretty wonky on OHRRPGCE's current engine and a lot of the game's difficulty is off balance. There still elements I had planned out for that game which I'm still anxious to use in future projects.

Speaking of games, I guess as of tomorrow Ash vs Evil Dead will make all those previous "sequel" games non-cannon (is there really an Evil Dead cannon though). I kind of liked some of the ideas in the C64 one. I never really cared for ED:Hail to the King, ED: Fistful of Boomstick, or ED: Regenteration as I found the gameplay in all of those really lacking. I tried and quickly deleted the mobile games, and I always thought it was always weird that Ash appeared in Poker Night 2 but without Bruce Campbell or Tell Tale making an AoD game.

Any Evil Dead related stories or creations you all want to share before the show airs?

It just jumps into the show, but later on in the episode, Ash retells what happened to him and they replay scenes from both Evil Dead 1 and 2, but no mention of the events that took place in Army of Darkness (probably due to the legal rights)

Ash is REALLY dumb.

Yep, saw this at comiccon where Raimi spoke, and that's pretty much the case. No AoD currently since they don't have the rights to it.

Episode was pretty good. The only bad part was the cgi blood explosion from Amanda's headshot. The CGI girl doll wasn't half bad, however.

The girls are fucking hot in this show good lord.

Doesn't this not air until tomorrow night (Halloween)? There was another thread where the guy was claiming to have just watched it on Starz. Now I'm confused...

Starz had a surprise airing of the first episode at the end of their Evil Dead Marathon tonight. Bruce Campbell said to watch it again tomorrow to keep the ratings up.

They just showed the first episode and will show it again tomorrow.

Just look on your DirecTV guide (I assume cable has a guide function as well).

Nice. So exactly how long was the episode?

~40 minutes. Weird since I expected it to only be 30. Maybe its just extra long for the premier.

The shorter run time really does pay off. Pacing is not an issue whatsoever. With only 10 episodes per season I think we're looking at a very tight show, essentially the same length as a miniseason.

edit: or miniseries*

What are the chances that Mia from ED '13 guest stars/crosses over?

I would love to see her run into Ash.

Doubt it. The story is really just a continuation of Evil Dead 2.

Its amazing how Army of Darkness was completely inconsequential at the end of the day lol. Best filler ever.

I thought the reboot had no relation to the original movies, aside from sharing similar elements? (The Book of the Dead, the main protagonist loosing his/her marbles through sheer psychological torture, etc.)

If anything, there is a lot of ambiguity of the film's relationship to the original Evil Dead trilogy, so I just assumed that the 2013 Evil Dead movie is it's own thing.

There was talk from Raimi, Campbell, and Mia about the potential of some sort of crossover where Ash and Mia run into each other (canon/tone be damned). Plus, Ash appeared at the end of the credits of '13.

Plus, the title intro song Elfman did for the movie is fucking incredible!

Would'nt they have to retcon the entire ending of Evil Dead 2 if they want to avoid AOD? I mean, Evil Dead 2 ends with Ash in medieval times. Though granted all three of the original films really do have loose continuity from each other as it is. Evil Dead 2 does;t even acknowledge the original movie. Army of Darkness makes some changes to the end of Evil Dead 2.

Wait, seriously? Ash made an appearance after the credits of the movie?

...I don't know what to think of that. :/

Feels like I've been waiting for this my whole life. Sam was back to his ultimate self and just executed this episode perfectly. Seriously the best thing he has written/directed since Army of Darkness. Just the little things - like Ash's expository self monologues - made it feel authentic.

Even if I never see another episode and get my soul swallowed tomorrow, I can die happy. The king has returned

I just watched it.

I can't believe that this show exists, I just can't believe it.

I can't believe we get two seasons of it on top of the fact that it simply exists.

I had a huge smile on my face the same time, this is just awesome!

why doesn't starz have a paid streaming service? none of my friends with cable subs have it either :(

i wonder if this will be added to the hulu starz section. really want to watch it!

Yup I really want to support this but simply cannot because of not having Cable and Starz is one of the few cable channels that refuses to release a streaming app. Lame!

I thought this show was amazing except for some REALLY bad cg. I also love the Evil Dead movies so for me this was an A+. If you don't like those movies, don't bother, this is completely in that vein. Casuals looking for Walking Dead need not apply.

I just rewatched the trilogy in preparation and realized something.

Ash's evil possessed hand is MIA. We last see it when it stabs that girl while reciting the words to open the portal.

Clearly this is a conflict they need to resolve.

They strongly implied that we could eventually see the evil hand again. The cabin is nearly 100% confirmed as well.

The first episode nailed it. Took me a little while to warm up to it. By the end of the episode, was readjusted to Evil Dead's raw camp.

Just watched the premiere. Fucking brilliant. My only concern at this point is a drop in quality without Raimi at the helm for the remaining episodes. The quality for the episode was great too. Didn't feel like some cheap Netflix show.

They pretty much nailed everything that makes Ash great, and where he would be at this stage in life. Using his scumbag tactics to bang trashy girls at the bar, while dodging life's responsibilities.

I was partially watching the marathon last night and was pretty surprised when this came on after. I ran and grabbed my wife and we watched it. It was awesome.

It's because the doll isn't CGI. They only used CGI to remove the rod.

They show the portal in the intro but they skip past the medieval part, possibly retconning it (or just avoiding showing it for now). Its not like AoD ends on a note thats consistent with AvsED either, since there's a Deadite in his merchandise store (which was an amazing scene but was never explained story-wise).

Every Evil Dead sequel has sort of "remade" the previous entry with its first 10 minutes or so. Evil Dead 2 recast Linda and played out Evil Dead 1 again sort of. AoD redid the entire medieval introduction scene (and recast Linda a second time? lol). Well, the first episode of AvsED takes the concept of AoD's ending (fighting Deadites in modern times + still working at the department store) and just redoes it.

It's because the doll isn't CGI. They only used CGI to remove the rod.

At least parts of it is CGI, as you can see it moving around and stuff. The CGI for the doll face when it was talking was terrible imho. :/

Rest of the special effects looks awesome though.
