And where are these sales numbers you claim to have, I'm sure Jessica trumps her lil sis in total sales. For one, she's much more known worldwide, for 2, she is better "singer", if you wanna call that singing. :lol

My tastes aren't as eclectic as you might think. I primarily listen to underground hip-hop, my favorite artists of the moment being Common, Little Brother, Cormega, and Ed OG.

I've listened to enough Avril to know she's a hack no more talented than Jessica Simpson. While I'm not a fan of Simpson, I find the hate many here direct her way to be tiresome and steeped in envy -- she's adored by millions, fabulously wealthy, and doing what she loves. Ok, she's bereft of any singing ability. So the fuck what? How many of you can stand before millions and endure the boorish display that those idiots in the crowd subjected her to? I'm willing to bet many of them were adults, which makes their behavior all the more deplorable. "Oh, my god! I can make a girl cry for giving it her best try."

I respect the girl for gracefully facing those idiots.

You listen to Cormega (one of the most underated in hip-hop btw :)), yet you were the same one dissing hip-hop for being a negative influence on blacks? Hmm, am I missing a piece of the puzzle here?

And BTW it does take talent to write songs, no matter what you may think. Not anyone can just sit there and pop a song out of their ass that sells records, I don't care how molded they are.

And for the record, I don't think people should be so hard on the girl for not having talent, most of it isn't even her fault, I'm sure she was feeling come sort of pressure/neglect just because of who she is. She can't sing, I know, get over it.

Avril Lavigne's first album was completely churned out by professional song writers. Since then she's taken on more of the responsiblities. Of course her lyrics are very much those of someone who's barely 20, but she deserves a lot more credit than Ashlee.

Butch Walker produced and helped write her latest two singles. Here's what he said after Ashlee bombed on SNL.

"Nothing pisses me off more than someone who doesn't deserve to be in this business," he says. "I can guarantee Avril is singing every note onstage. And a guy like Usher might lip synch during his show, but he's worried about getting electrocuted during his rain sequence. If you're an entertainer like that, that's fine. But if you're famous because your sister is famous, don't call me. I've got better things to do."

Regardless of the bucko bucks she got paid to be there, you KNOW it's gotta hurt to just stand there after you've finished...um, I guess you'd call it singing and listen to a STADIUM full of people boo you. You could see the hurt expression creep up on her face right before they tactfully cut away. They should've cut to commercial the moment it ended. Hell, they should've cut to commercial the moment it began.

As much as I slightly feel bad for her, she did a horrible performance in front of a load of people. The jeers are part of the game. Don't give me any of this "oh, those oafish meanies" business. What should the crowd have done? Shouted in unison "oh it's ok Ashlee, your sister can still sing"? The truth of the matter is that her sound is utterly fabricated in post-production. So long as that churns out a decent song or two, great, but she needs to stop pretending like she can perform live. She's already proven twice over that it's not exactly an arena she excels at. You've got to have an iota of talent to begin with before you can do that. As much as I dislike Jessica's music, you've got to admit, the girl can sing.

Soon, having 'featuring Ashlee Simpson' on a show is going to become a punchline.

Avril Lavigne is solidly in the pop genre. Norah Jones is pretty damn close, too.

They both can sing better than Ashlee, of course, but they are a part of her genre.

Norah Jones is much more ready and willing to do Jazz standards and generally more knowledgable in that area - whereas Ashlee Simpson probably wouldn't know what a trumpet or saxophone actually looks like.

Norah was on NPR's "Piano Jazz" not too long ago as well and that was a really good show, she's very gracious.

Don't get me wrong -- I like Norah Jones and listen to her from time to time -- but she's definitely "pop-jazz" at the very least. Her songs (at least on the two albums I've heard) don't feature much in the way of improv solos from any of the instruments, or even solos at all, which is something I'd consider a staple of any good "pure" jazz song.

At the end of the day, if somebody held a gun to my head and made me chose a genre for her, she'd definitely fit better into "pop" than "jazz". Playing her own instruments and writing her own songs is respectable and noble, but it doesn't change the genre of her music.

Maybe what we really need is a new genre to lump people like Ashlee Simpson in. I'll take some "Shit" tags down to my local record store and see if they go for it. :D

Are you familar with the production team "The Matrix"? Because they're the ones responsible for 9/10ths of Avril's album. Do YOU actually listen to the music you defend?

What does production have to do with hands on writing of lyrics and being able to sing decently live? Of course she's going to have an excellent production team, like dude said above, she's still a pop artist, so she's going to have the best production team money can buy. That still doesn't take away from her ability to write songs and sing. I could give 2 sh1ts about the chick she ain't lining my pockets, I'm just telling you what the deal is.

What's production in rawk music though if not assistance in all things musical & lyrical? It's not like hip-hop where (and I know you know this, man, I'm just speaking to anyone who might be interested) the producer is the guy making the beats.

Take Liz Phair for example. Her albums before the latest one sound - both musically & lyrically - completely different than her latest. What's the difference? The other albums weren't produced by THE MATRIX.

If they're not 95% of the creative process for Avril AND Liz, then I'll eat my hat.

The problem with A.Simpson is she thinks she's doing more than just crappy pop. If she would just sing the typical love ballads like the rest of her contemporaries, she would receive less flack. Instead she tries to act like some rebel with the shaggy dark clothes, dark hair and make-up, and being backed up by a "punk" band like she’s actually punk. She doesn't have the vocal chops to perform the way she did and thus came off as the fraud that she is.

Mainstream America just laughs at her and punk kids look at her as a corporate tool stealing their culture.
