Asian-GAF: We're all the same, like Stormtroopers |OT| |AT|

My dad's getting a kidney transplant!! :D

Niiice! Congratulations for your dad! I definitely know how hard it can be for a kidney. My best friend has been going through years for one (he finally got one in July '16)

But definitely happy for him, you and your family. :)

But they haven't banned us from complaining yet in AsianGAF so..

It's basically like, go protest somewhere, but not anywhere where it can inconvenience us. Wonder where I've heard that before lol.

My last ban was partially because I complained that the racism against Asian trickles down (edit for clarification: on the GAF forum), and was told no. I guess institutionalized racism is not a real thing, guys.

The oppressed make the best oppressors.

AA is just stupid bandaid for our shitty and uneven primary education. The real issue is that we need to start putting more resources into underperforming districts or overhaul our system like Canada did long ago.

The one dude that claims to work on the admissions committee of a college bagging on asian apps is depressing ..

Yep. I know UW out here has a super shitty one too.

AA is a bandaid for much larger issues (the educational system in general, inherent racism in admissions departments, etc.), but the solution is not to drop AA and let people do whatever they want.

Fix the problem, not the symptom.

The point of AA is to never have to actually fix the system.

Anybody eat at Eddie Huang's New York spot? It's coming to LA in the same plaza as Ramen Champ, pok pok (rip), and the fried chicken place (never tried it. I'm not standing in line for an hour).

As much as I like new hip restaurants, I'm actually kinda sad too because there used to be a three dollar noodle place (literally two items on menu) thats no longer there. It was a few years ago though so there's no new, young tenants kicking out old tenant narrative.

What fried chicken place?

There's a place called Tokyo Fried Chicken in Monterey Park that's really good but also has massive lines. I haven't been there since I had a baby.

The few times I've been downtown los angeles for meetings, I try to hit up Chinatown for lunch afterwards, there was a big old line. Not sure what these people do for work, but I sure as heck don't have that much time to wait.

They're website has wait times for the food like it's disneyland.

Thanks :) My family's AB blood, so our resultant genetics are hard to match.

CA public colleges and universities don't officially use AA. This would reintroduce it.

Checkin' with the fine, handsome, intelligent, internet party people around here

Sorry about the anti asian sentiment on GAF, I personally have said nothing but groupthink and or collective prejudice tends to be viral.

I would post food pics but all the asian food that are available is some franchise chinese buffet places

any who, are there any book recommendations for like understanding asian perspectives in America and else where?

It's infuriating seeing women who are in support of Trump. MSNBC was on and I had nothing else to watch and to hear and see who these women are, are just......

We have women who have come out and said that he assaulted them and called them plenty of disparaging names yet..... These women are still in his boat?!

The fuck?

@Nomadic Sparks, sorry buddy I don't know any books. Maybe our more knowledgeable people here can help you with recommendations.

So what then? Remove AA and go back to only white people getting into colleges?

You can develop a fix for the system (that removes the need for AA) while AA is still in place.

I agree with this point ..I'm just annoyed that the argument is about AA rather than the real problem being the inequality of our compulsory educational system in general. The talk is always about getting kids into college and getting a degree rather than getting a proper education...

Yep. Make getting a quality education available to everyone and you won't need to compete for spots.

Tuition needs to be affordable, textbooks need to not be a ripoff, teachers need to be rewarded for the important work they do, student loans need to not be money-making schemes for banks...etc. etc.

From a local writer: "No, Really, Where are You From?" By Nancy Ng. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0095ZI9TK/

Also, try http://theracecardproject.com/

AA has always been a bandaid that people who don't see the benefit from try to rip off.

I read a bit, so made a small list. YMMV as to the quality.

Yellow by Frank Wu- The standard in my opinion as to the Asian American experience in academia.

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang- graphic novel aimed towards teens but really everyone should be reading this. Weaves the Monkey King into the story which is neat.

Big Little Man by Alex Tizon- delves into the ongoing asexual/feminization(sp?) of Asian men in western media.

The Chinatown War by Scott Zesch- The history of the Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles which was the largest lynching in American history. People need to remember this. I'm a fan of local history, so this was of extra interest to me.

If you don't want to read a 350 page book about it, here's an LA Weekly article on it.

http://www.laweekly.com/news/how-los-angeles-covered-up-the-massacre-of-17-chinese-2169478

So, read the first two books listed. The other two if you're curious.

I guess my issue with it is that the point of AA when it comes to college seems to be specifically to keep rich white people getting into college at the appropriate rate, and screw any singular group that overachieves (which is a bigger problem of people having Big Data but having Small Analytical Capabilities and Bad Math).

I agree that there needs to be a fix, but considering there is zero effort to, you know, help underprivileged kids between the ages of 3 and 17 - I don't think they realize the problem or they really even care about the actual problem. Then again, thanks to NJ / Cory Booker, the entire concept of throwing money at pre-college education took a massive blow. :(

Saw that topic about where are you really from. I guess it's different for us in Hawaii. We straight up ask each other "so you filipino/japanese/vietnamese/???" and take no offense. Dunno, maybe because there is no race majority here.

"Where are you from?" is totally different from "What ethnicity are you?".

Some people ask the first question when they actually want the answer for the second question. It's dumb.

It'd be easier if they just straight up asked "what are you?", though it'd still be pretty rude to a stranger (if it's one of the first things you say).

An update on my previous posts: my dad is out from the transplant surgery, and is already looking much better :)

congrats to your dad!

i'm waiting for a call for myself as well to come in for transplant, so it's always nice to hear someone who gets one

I'm kind of sick of eating random stir-fry at home :/ Never thought I would grow tired of eating Asian food albeit "normal" Asian foods. Been itching for a good ass burger and some good ass fries. Maybe a good ass medium-rare steak *drools* or, or hear me out here. Some chicken wings, possibly spicy.

There's a favorite Chinese food thread, y'all.

It's about what you'd expect.

I don't really eat that much Chinese food tbh. Even when I order out now it's usually Japanese food. Oops. I guess I should eat more Chinese food.

It's not so bad... lots of people advocating for real Chinese food. Plus someone saying he gets teriyaki chicken and another cream of sum yung gai... :O

As someone who grew up eating plenty of American Chinese and traditional Cantonese & Toisan food... they're all real to me. Regional differences! :p

That said, lately I've been getting Vietnamese or Mexican food when I order out. (Sorry no food porn.)
