Attack On Titan live action film first look at characters

When are we getting Season 2 of the anime? That's what I'm more interested in :/
Kenshin movies look awesome but this... this doesn't really look that good going by the cast.

On the cast selection, producer Yoshihiro Sato said he did not pay as much attention to whether or not the cast members looked like the original characters. Instead, he had many discussions with Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama and went with actors who could act out the "characters' spirits."

well that's odd. Not so much how they look, but that they're throwing out the whole "Mikasa is one of the only real Japanese descendants left" thing. Granted, I've only watched as far as the anime has gone so I don't know if that's really a big deal or not later (Don't want to know either please). Then again, I guess I never expected her to be the only Japanese person in the movie just from a logistical standpoint.

They have rocket launchers in Attack on Titan?

They used bows in attack on Titan?

Not sure about rocket launchers, but yeah at one point Sasha did use a bow to repel a Titan in order to save a child.

Isn't it a Japanese production? Makes sense that they'd cast Japanese actors

For some strange reason quite a few people have missed this fact. I mean it's a Japanese IP whose feature film is being created by a Japanese film and production studio to be released in Japan for a Japanese audience, and some people are shocked the characters aren't white? Talk about sense of entitlement.

I feel like I'm on some forum version of Punk'd.

Is 1/2 of the film going to consist of characters crying or coming to grave realizations? I really wanted to like the anime series but they just beat you over the head with the idea that war is bad.

These complaints really boggle the mind. This isn't a Hollywood major production. The acting is gonna suck guaranteed. This is a Japanese production of an anime. If anything it'll be as close to the source material as we can ever hope to get. The thing is that really won't do the source justice in a live action setting. I'll enjoy the hell out of it but, yeah in terms of bringing the grissled reality of life within the walls to reality it's going to fail no questions asked. I don't think that's going to be the aim.

Why are people upset over armin's hair? Were people this upset when Daniel Craig was announced to be Bond a few years ago? The Bond in the books has black hair.

Their racial differences, particularly Mikasa's, are pointed out, and are a somewhat important part of her back story. It's really not a big deal and ultimately ignore-able, but it's got a little more weight than the Bond comparison.

So what's, like, the plot of this movie? Because in what's been released of the anime so far, almost nothing has been revealed or accomplished. Not that I think it's bad, just that it wouldn't make a very satisfying standalone movie.

Bows are fine, but rocket launchers make no goddamn sense. The most advanced weapons they have in the manga (besides 3DMG) are canons and muskets. I mean, rocket launchers were originally anti-tank weapons. They gonna have tanks too?

That and Not-Armin have me excited to see the train wreck that will be this movie.

That and Armin's hair really stuck out for me. I mean, AOT is more steam punk than anything.

It's still nothing. How is Mikasa being played by an Asian person somehow stopping them from making her character someone that isn't native to where Armin and co. are from? Even if it did, why does it even matter?

This is going to stink, I can smell it already. Going to be even worse then new Lupin film. Hopefully WB Japan is cooking up another anime to live-action project. Kenshin wasn't actually bad at all considering the source material and apparently the trilogy did really well in Japan.

I like how they look. Better than having an obvious dyed hair character just to stay true to source materials---Phoenix Wright movie.../puke.

And the whole race thing doesn't even comes into play until later in the series anyway.

I don't understand why they don't just correct the author when its apparent the author has no grasp on the language he's trying to translate into. Its clearly supposed to be Attack OF THE Titans (the pre-official translation title was often translated as "Advance of the Giants"), but they let the author dictate what the English title is so we ended up with official Engrish.

Huh. And here I just thought the whole anime took place on Titan, the moon of Saturn.

wow no blonde hair. Its 2014 and we can't cast one blonde haired person. Shaking my head Japan, SHAKING MY HEAD

This is gonna be one of those entire green screen japanese movies from the looks of those backgrounds.

Maybe it's because I haven't seen the show in a while, but I feel like I don't recognize about half of the names, and those that I do, I wouldn't have been able to recognize. I wonder if the lens flare is a prominent character.

He was okay in the new Star Trek movies and my local news.

I felt like he overdid it in my brother's vacation photos though.

Well, Mikasa is supposed to be Asian (one of the last in the story's/her setting/background) so that's not what's at issue, it's everyone pretty much everyone else that isn't supposed to be. In the world, it seems most people don't really have a good understanding of human's history before the Walls, but they do understand what people are left inside the walls came from different ethnic groups and races. Again, it's still somewhat minor if they want to gloss over/modify that fact/her backstory, though it does inform and influence her initial situation and meeting with Eren (her and her mother's 'rarity', if you will, causes them to be the target of blackmarket slavers). Obviously, it's almost impossible to cast a Japanese-language film with the intent for primary consumption in Japan using a cast almost entirely made of foreigners, but the detail is still somewhat of an important one, just one that they'll have to write around.

They can still be from a different area. Just because they're all Japanese doesnt make it impossible. Look at human history and the amount of discrimination we as humans have done against people where differences were even smaller than skin colour. It's still possible to do all that you said with an all Japanese cast. Mikasa's family could have been brought up in a different culture and that's what makes them 'different' to everyone else. There are loads of possibilities to still have that otherness representative in Mikasa and her family without it being her skin colour.

Regardless though, the movie will for sure be trash

From what I understand, there really aren't that many different areas left to the humans behind the walls and what's left of humanity, for the most part, pretty homogeneous culturally. Either way, they'll have to write around the situation and alter something with the background/setting.

I have so many questions about this.

Apart from the glaring obvious that they are all Asian and only the female (forgot her name as I am posting sorry) is meant to be half Asian its strange but I'll let that slide.

How are they going to make this in to a 2 or 3 hour film? They would need to do a series of them and even then it may get boring in places.

I hope they manage to convey the early series 1 feeling of all was hopeless. As it was a depressing show for me (in a good way).

I read the translation from the Thai forum that this will consist of 2 movies and will be set in an alternate universe with RPGs and Tanks....

Also the actress that will play Mikasa is Half American/Half Korean so may be this will be opposite of the manga and anime. The racism angle will be Caucasian instead of Asian.

I love Attack on Titan and those people in the OP look great, but I can't help but thinking of a (good) Hollywood adaption where everyone is played by the best actors Germany has to offer.
And some Japanese (or at least Asian) people.
