Backwards Compatibility: Rev(yes) PS3(probably) XENON(???)

Backwards compatibility is good and all, but will we finally see some graphical enhancements to go with it? It would be damn sweet if we could get AA/AF to spice up old games.

What's with this blind hate against backwards compatibility?

you'd have to be a blind deaf mute retard to think backwards compatibility is a bad idea/unimportant.

Look at the people who are actually arguing against it. They only have an Xbox and they blindly follow MS. If MS says they will have BC in Xbox2 then all of a sudden these people saying it sucks will say its a great idea. :lol

BC isn't a must but its a good feature to have. If they made the Xbox2 BC then everyone could get rid of the massive Xbox sitting in their room. I mean when you own more than one console things start to get hectic with your setup and the more you can do to save space the better.

I'm not going to list all the positives of BC because its already been pointed out but what I find funny is people saying that they'd rather have the money spent elsewhere. Its not like you have the option of BC or getting something else. :lol

The companies will either include it or just pocket the money. I didn't see Sony adding stuff to the PS2 because they didn't make more than 2 controller ports. And since MS is bleeding money with the Xbox they will probably be conservative with the Xbox2 meaning you won't get stuff for "free".

Also I don't think its pointed out but when you don't follow the leader and your the odd console out its NEVER a good sign. People will assume the standard is set by Sony so they will look down on the Xbox2 if its "missing" features that the PS3 has. Not having a DVD Player hurt Nintendo and I think they are playing it correct by following the leader. Only the market leader can get away with being different and not having it hurt them.

Add guys like me who havent bought and Xbox and still would like a couple of games from the Xbox.

Yeah...thats, one thing I didn't consider...

*Theoretical Situation*
What if you have a PS2 or Gamecube (lets say one of our Japanese GA contingent, like Singh or John tv) and the lack of japanese support, not to mention the positioning of the Xbox in japan really made think twice at an Xbox....those two Halo games and Ninja Gaiden DO appeal to you but you are not getting the console without some first class (in your eyes) RPGs from Japan...

Flash forward to 2006 and GODDAMN that Halo3 looks kickass and did you see those 2 Mistwalker RPGs??? Kee-rist!!!....still...I am waiting for more...

Its too bad, though, that Xenon doesn't allow me to play those few Xbox games I *was* intrested in though....that would have sealed the deal for me, without question....

Would the above actuall happen??....maybe, maybe not....you do have some console owners, though, that do not like the Xbox, but do like the games...

My job ? I'm not a MS employee or anything like that. My job is not even remotely linked to Microsoft in any way, even our computers and servers all run linux, except a few test boxes.
But believe me, my friends' trust is much more important to me than telling stuff to strangers on a gaming board.

Oh, I thought you were a game developer and thus there would be repurcussions of some sort for spilling information to a message board. Well then, tell us!

I care. Publishers care. Developers care. Parents care. People with limited space in their living room care. Lots of people in this thread care. You however, it seems, don't. Thats allowed, but please don't think your opinion is the bottom line.

Good one. +1 BC fan here. I like to replay PS1 games on my PS2. I play GBC games on my GBA SP and GBA games on my DS.

As big as the Xbox is, it only makes BC MORE of an issue. Who wants to hog half their entertainment center with the humungous brick that is Xbox because Xenon is not BC?

Xenon has alot going for it, but not having BC will hurt it out the gate. This deficit may be amelioted down the road, but by then Rev and PS3 will be out. Xenon may lose the advantage of their early launch.

people with cash don't care.

even if we run out of space, we just buy a bigger (or second) house.

Not to plug our own site, but J Allard addresses backwards-compatibility here:

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?pager.offset=2&cId=3138802

And pretty much scrambles around the topic by saying that the Xbox team is looking towards the future, and doesn't want people's heads in the past. Which is a nice euphemistic way of saying "We don't have backwards compatibility."

To me, if that is true and he's not blowing smoke, it's disappointing, from the simple, practical perspective of I'd like to play my older games conveniently on my new system. It certainly didn't hurt the PS2. It won't hurt the Revolution. It's just a service to gamers, and taking the philosophical, hoity-toity stance about how "we must move forward" sounds great on paper now, but people are still going to want to backwards-compatibility. Anyone who says they don't is lying. It's like saying "I don't want a gastank with my car. I'm past gastanks!" Of course, if the Xenon doesn't have a hard-drive in the traditional sense, it would probably take some work to make the hardware accomodate the old Xbox games that do make use of Xbox 1's specific features, like the harddrive and whatnot.

For me, I'd basically just like to be able to take the 400-lb. system off the rack and replace it with something sleeker.
